Momentary disconnects on shared drive on 2008R2 file server

$

I've got a question that I've been scratching my head about for a couple of days, so I figured I'd toss it out there and see if anyone's seen something similar.

I've got a Server 2008R2 file server that hosts several shared drives.  One shared drive is basically for storage of software installers - mostly used by our help desk.  When someone tries to run an installer from that shared drive, it will (about 8-9 times out of 10) fail with the error: "Error reading from file: S:\<filename>.  Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."  The error is usually fairly quick, so I don't think it's a timeout, and even happens on very fast installs.  If there's a retry option, that will usually work, indicating that whatever the interruption was, it's very brief in duration.  Obviously, the exact error varies with the program you're trying to install, but it's as if the user has been disconnected from the share.  This happens on both XP and 7 clients, happens for regular users and domain admins, happens if you browse directly to the share instead of relying on the mapped drive...

I don't see any errors on the file server, and our other drives on that server appear to not be doing this, and neither are our other file servers.  I've tried playing with the idling timeout, I've tried turning off and on SMB signing and some other security-related stuff, but I'm not making progress.  If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate the input!

VSS error 8193

I am getting three VSS errors when WS2008 backup executes.  I have no idea where to begin to look for the problem.
The error (Event 8193) is:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine ConvertStringSidToSid.  hr = 0x80070539.

Operation:
   OnIdentify event
   Gathering Writer Data

Context:

   Writer Instance ID: {b7e9a7ca-db70-47c8-922b-0fa15f064b10}

The other two are duplications of this error.
Can anyone help me find a solution to this error?
Here is a snapshot of the Application Events when the backup executes.

We have a problem trying to access file on a network share over a windows storage server 2008

This problem is fixed by a hotfix mentioned in Article ID: 2550581.

But when we try to apply this hotfix, the system refuse it, indicating that is not for server storage edition.

¿How can I obtain the correct hotfix?

Is DFS the right solution

I have been assigned a task to implement DFS in our current infrastructure. We have three sites, one head office and two branch office. The head office has one physical server installed server 2012 standard and exchange 2013 on the same server. The two branch offices also have server 2012 standard and they both are domain controllers. We are now planning to implement DFS and in relation to that I have few queries listed below. If anyone can share their experience with me will be really helpful

  1. Can we have DC, Exchange and DFS installed on the same physical server?
  2. Can we install DFS along with Exchange server?
  3. Is there any file size limit in DFS?
  4. Can DFS work along with Read only domain controller?
  5. Is there a alternative to DFS which works on multiplatform mixture of SBS and standard edition e.g box.com?
  6. Do we need extra space on the DFS server to store cache files?

Manual or PowerShell configuration of Server 2012 R2 WorkFolder quotas

Hi,

I have Server 2012 R2 setup with a "Work Folders" share. The quota templates aren't that great and I'm looking for

  1. Powershell or manual commands for configuring custom Work folder quotas
  2. Explanation of the default template options

The relevant TechNet Powershell help http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn296649(v=wps.630).aspx shows the quota methods as deprecated and there isn't much info on the web.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

strange behavior with subinacl utility

Hi all,

I try to change the owner of a folder with subinacl like this:

subinacl /subdirectories D:\thefolder /setowner=MY\user

It works BUT:

subinacl execution time is high (I'd never let it finish itself, pressed CTRL-C...) and the cause is subinacl seems explore *all* my D: volume, looking for another folder named "thefolder"

In my case, if there is a D:\anotherfolder\subfloder\thefolder , the ownership of this folder will be modified too

I'd tried also with an ending backslash in the path (seems to be same as \*.*)

So, what is wrong in my command line ?

Deploy a folder to all profiles on Terminal Server

I need to write/overwrite a folder periodically to all users. Because of the way some of the files work I cannot use Public Documents. They have to be individual to each user in their My Documents folder. This is What I want to do.

Take the folder from domain/administrator's My Documents folder and copy to each user in the same directory.

Any help would be awesome.

Setting share/folder access based on computers

I have a situation with a share for which I am having no luck finding a solution. Here's what my users want for a certain share:

- A group of users should have read/write permissions to the share, no matter where they log in.

- All users should have read/write permissions to the share, but only if they're logged in from a certain group of computers.

Adding the computers to the NTFS permissions doesn't solve the problem.

The share is on a server running Windows Server 2008 R2, and it's on a domain with all the computers.

I can create GPOs if necessary.

Thanks!

Migrating FRS to DFS clarification

We have 3 DC's that we would like to migrate from FRS to DFS.  We came across a technet article that lays out the steps needed to migrate.  We noticed, on all servers, the DFS service is running.  However, under the File Services role, DFS Namespace and DFS Replication is NOT installed.  I am wondering if these additional roles/services must be installed prior to performing the migration?  Or do they get installed during the migration process?  I ask because, the document I am referring to, only had us make sure the DFS Service was running and set to Automatic via Service.msc.

If they do need to be installed, would they be installed on all 3 servers?

DFS Replication High Availability issue

Hi,

In our environment, we've 3 File servers which host the same NameSpace and the DFS target folder is \\contoso.com\FS\2013.

When all 3 servers are up and running, the files can be replicated successfully. However, if we turn off DFS Namespace and DFS Replication service on certain server, the files in DFS target folder is not match every time.

For example: We turn off DFS Namespace and DFS Replication service on server A.

1) Insert test.txt to \\contoso.com\FS\2013 on server B.

2) Access \\contoso.com\FS\2013 on server C which cannot find the file.

3) Access the folder on server A or another client machine, the file can be retrieved.

Is it caused by stopped DFS Namespace? any suggestions are apprecaited.

Win2008 R2 - DFS File Locking Time-out

Hello,

We have a DFS server here shared among 50s different users.

We have a problem on file locking :

1. Some user open an application on DFS (double click program.exe).

2. User close application.

30 minutes passes.

3. I log on server to see Open files and I still still see program.exe being used by user..

4. I wait one hour or two and file is still locked (cannot delete, rename or move)

My question is : Is there a way to configure file lock release time?  Is there a way to make it release file lock earlier.  I even had some cases that file were locked for hours!!

note : I need a dynamic and automatic solution..

Not able to search for file on Windwos 2008 R2

Hello,

A few days ago I setup a new Windows 2008 R2 and migrated data from old file server.

The new server has the following roles installed: File Server Resource Manager and Windows Search Service.

Today a user indicated that when attempting to search for files no search results are showing  (using his Windows 7 PC). This issue seemed to happen for only files that were added after I moved directories from old server to new one. When searching for old file there is no issue. I was able to confirm this issue even when searching for files directly on the server.

I opened the Indexing Options and was able to see some 700k+ items are indexed and confirm that the directories are part of the indexing.

I attempted to troublehsoot but could not find a solution...any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks....b

Firewall Ports required to connect from Standalone Server to Domain Server File Share

I have the following Scenario that I’d appreciate some help with.

We have s standalone server on the other side of a Hardware Firewall from our corporate domain. We need to configure access to a file share FROM  the standalone server TO a domain member server via  a domain user account.

I am not sure which Firewall Ports I need to open and how the authentication flow works in this situation.

Is the authentication request passed along by the target member server or will the standalone server need to communicate directly with domain controllers?

My list so far:

Nbname 137/TCP - UDP
nbdatagram 138/UDP
nbsession 139/TCP
TCP/UDP port 445

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Removing Temporary Attributes

I am unable to remove temporary attribute for multiple files in DFSR Health Report.  The issue is with long path and filename with the following command.   For short path and file names, it works fine.

Get-childitem D:\Data -recurse -force | where {$_.attributes -match "temporary"} | ft fullname,lastwritetime,attributes -autosize

To see the attribute I used fsutil and specified the entire path and file name with 8.3 name.   Unfortunately, it looks like powershell does not like 8.3 names.

Is there an equivalent method in DOS? or get PowerShell to read long file path or 8.3 name?

(Moving/Renameing files is not a good solution at the moment)

DFS and Offline files Set up, confused!!

$

Hello, I have been reading and I am just not getting it. I have read a number of articles, its just not clicking for me. I need a real set of examples to work with, please.

  • Here is what I need.
  • DFS Offline files for personal folder available for laptops.
  • What we have currently.
  • DFS-N
  • \\Domain.local\company\Site
  • In here is where all the thier documents, desktop, etc. \FolderRedirect\"USERNAME" Redirected folders for eachuser
  • GP point the redirected folders to \\Domain.local\company\Site\FolderRedirect\"USERNAME" for all folders, desktop,my docs,, etc

Here is the issue, if I use the above DFS path for laptops, offline files will not show up, not even the green sync icon. But if I change the DFS path to local server \\server\Folderredirect$\"Username", everything works. This issue is that when we have roaming users with laptops that go from site to site, they cannot get to their files on the server, to sync.

We need DFS to work with offline, Maybe I need a step by step on setting this up, forgive my ignorance, but really need help here.

Thank you
Paul

WS2012R2 Datacenter Hyper-V hosts with WS2012R2 Fileservers (SMB & Infiniband) Failed to modify device "virtual hard disk" on all VMs

$

Hello everyone.

We have a setup with 4x hosts running WS2012R2 Datacenter Hyper-V towards 2x Fileservers WS2012R2 connected to a shared JBOD. All of the servers communicate over infiniband.

We run the Hyper-V over SMB with RDMA on a CSV volume that has deduplication enabled.

We were so happy that Window server 2012 R2 was released recently so we upgraded right away and finnaly things were stable , no longer any spamming errors of hard disks in use or bsoding hosts! All have been great since the release but something happened this weekend without any of us doing any changes.

All of a sudden my System Center 2012 VMS running SQL clusters with the new "Shared VHDX" feature failed. I started to investigate the problem and it seems that we cannot "change or edit" any virtual hard disks on our entire VM share. If i try to use advance features and change to shared vhdx it fails, it does not matter if its a new vm i create or a old one.

I need some help with this, I feel clueless to why it happened or how to fix it?

Thank you,

Marcus

File Server Resource Manager Simultaneous Thresholds Exceeded

$

We are experiencing a unique issue I'm hoping to get help/clarification on.  We have thresholds setup on everyone's home directory.  At 80%, an email is sent to the user who exceeded the threshold, at 90% the user and our helpdesk (helpdesk@domain), and 100% which is the same as 90%.  What we are seeing is that when someone suddenly exceeds both the 80% and the 90% thresholds, an email is only sent to the user and not the helpdesk.  I'm assuming because it is processing the first threshold reached. Is there a way to correct this so it processes tha tlast threshold reached?
