Disk Type: Dynamic

Partition Style: MBR

Capacity: 2813952 MB

Unallocated: 716802 MB

Reserved Space: 0 MB

Files still exist after the copying is disrupted

I have a problem when the large file copy from the laptop to the external USB HDD or NAS (via CIFS share). When the copy is disrupted (either the network is down or the power outrage to my external HDD), the file still exist in the folder but cannot be read or open. The corrupted file is still showing full size of the file. How can I avoid this?

Write-Back Cache in Scale-Out File Server

My test environment setup consists of one Hyper-V server and a two-node Scale-Out File Server.  All have Windows Server 2012 R2 installed with the latest updates as of today.

My question is about Server 2012 R2's Write-Back Cache configured on disks created on the SOFS.  Is there any way to monitor the Write-Back Cache?  Or put another way, how can I tell how effective the current size (i.e. 5 GB) of the Write-Back Cache is?  How can I tell if I need more cache or that less could be used?

I'm thinking my Write-Back Cache for a virtual disk on my SOFS quickly becomes full, which is causing the file copy process (to a VM's VHDX running on that virtual disk) to look like hills and valleys--bursts of fast copy speeds interspaced with bursts of slow copy speeds.

Thanks!

Error: Windows cannot copy file. The filename or extension is too long

Hello friends, I am trying to copy files from one file server to another on the same network, but few have the following error when trying to copy "Error:. Windows can not copy file The filename or extension is too long."

Actually has several folders and files with long names, but the customer needs to copy the files without reducing the size of the names.

Do you know any way to solve this problem? Either manually or through some special software?

Thank you!

"Failed to set access paths" when trying to mount a partition

I have a newly formatted drive (GPT, NTFS, 64k). When I try to mount it to a folder, I get the error "Failed to set access paths. Failed to add or remove access paths. Invalid Parameter". I have previously mounted drives on this server and they are working fine. I've tried 2 new drives and neither will mount. I have tried in the "Manage Drive Letter and Access Paths" under File and Storage Services. I've also tried the old Disk Management tool and PowerShell.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this issue?

Unable to Claim Clariion volumes by MPIO

Hello all,

I’ve configured MPIO on a Win2k8 R2 and added several Clariion volumes in it.
To install Clariion DSM, I installed EMC PowerPath 5.7.1 SP1 software. Added "DGC RAID 5" and "DGC RAID 10" in "MPIO->Discover MultiPaths" tab. Then claimed the disks viampclaim.exe -r -i -a "" command.

I’m not able to make the Clariion Volumes to be claimed by MPIO. (MPIO’ed for Clariion volumes is False):

C:\Users\Administrator>mpclaim -s -d

Here if you notice, “System Disk” is N\A for Clariion volumes and “MPIO’ed” is No.
To solve this issue, I disabled PowerPath services and claimed (mpclaim.exe -r -i -a "") again and rebooted machine. But the output remains same.

Any help or suggestions to resolve this issue are welcome…

Thank in advance

DFSR doesn't start replication

Hello. I've got some strange problem with DFSR. We have two servers with Windows 2012R2 and the disk about 12Tb for replication. About a week ago initial replication was working fine. But suddenly it stopped with event IDs 4010 and 2010. Reboot didn't help. I've tried to recreate the replication but the replication doesn't start at all. On the secondary member I see event 4102 that it is ready for initial replication but there is nothing on the primary member. In the debug log I see:

20140807 10:32:53.966 8700 SRTR   971 [WARN] SERVER_EstablishSession Failed to establish a replicated folder session. connId:{605DEC59-914E-4FE0-BE2F-4D7365187AC6} csId:{7191B1EC-050D-4DF7-97E3-EC35B5CD860D} Error:

Unable To Create and/or Rename Folders on DFS Shares

$

Hi

We have a Windows 2008 Storage Server that we use as a data server. About 100 folders are shared on our network and we use DFS to collect these shares into manageable shared units.

The network comprises 35 Windows 7 clients and one Vista client and a couple of XP machines. These are on a Windows Active Directory that presently comprises three domain controllers: 2003, 2008 and 2012 R2. The network comprises just one site and one subnet.

This setup has worked fine for many years (we've had an Active Directory domain since 2001).

As soon as I replaced our Windows XP clients with the Windows 7 clients I have been seeing some strange network issues.

The most bizarre, and the most unwelcome is that when staff try to create new folders or rename existing ones they will sometimes not be allowed to. The problem is intermittent and I have no idea what may be causing it.

The folder rename issue was encountered when we still used XP but I fixed that by disabling the caching of thumbnails. The error message that appears states the folder is in use. I have used Computer Management on the storage server and looked at Shared Folders > Open Files and have determined that no files were open when this issue occurred.

When staff are unable to create a new folder they see the following message:

Create New Folder message

I have tried various things to troubleshoot this with the help of a TechNet Community Support person in the Windows 7 forums here.

To summarise we have tried using Process Monitor to capture the events and I am quite happy to upload this if anyone would like to see it.

We tried the registry edits detailed in this MS article.

I have created a dedicated firewall rule that allows all traffic on TCP ports 137, 138, 139 and 445.

Another respondent suggested checking out Slow-Link mode but this has not been triggered.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this, please? The network worked like a dream before the Windows 7 clients were introduced, when XP was used.

Thanks!

Share is available but content is gone

Hello,

Having some issues in the past weeks with share content disappearing, but the share is still available with no files within it. I can fix this temporarily by disable and enabling the shares again and do all the permissions again.

There are multiple shares on the same 2003 R2 server, however on another file server 2008 R2 I don't experience any issues. Nothing particular in event logs and changes in the past weeks.

The users usually report this issue at random times. I cannot see a pattern when it happens.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

DFS Stopped intial replication - This member is waiting for initial replication for replicated folder Data and is not currently participating in replication

$

I created a new replication group and it replicated 180GB of 250GB from Server A (10.1.1.x) to Server B (10.2.2.x). Then it just stopped. I ran a health report and it gives me this message:

"This member is waiting for initial replication for replicated folder Data and is not currently participating in replication. This delay can occur because the member is waiting for the DFS Replication service to retrieve replication settings from Active Directory Domain Services. After the member detects that it is part of replication group, the member will begin initial replication. Replication will begin after initial replication is complete."

I ran "WMIC /namespace:\\root\microsoftdfs path DfsrReplicationGroupConfig get LastChangeSource" to get the DC and it was correct.

I ran "Dfsradmin Membership List /RGName:FolderA /attr:MemName,RFName, IsPrimary" and the results came back stating that neither member is primary.

So my questions are:

1.  Wouldn't a primary member have been set during the initial replication since it replicated 180GB of data already and then just stopped?  Or did DFS think initial replication was completed and therefore removed the primary member?

2.  Do I have to set a primary member using this command line before it'll start working again "Dfsradmin Membership Set /RGName:<replication group name> /RFName:<replicated folder name> /MemName:<member you want to be primary> /IsPrimary:True?

3.  I've checked the dfsr log file and I'm seeing this.  Does this show anything?

"[Error:9027(0x2343) DownstreamTransport::EstablishSession downstreamtransport.cpp:4054 5132 C A failure was reported by the remote partner]
+ [Error:9051(0x235b) DownstreamTransport::EstablishSession downstreamtransport.cpp:4054 5132 C The content set is not ready]

4.  I see this article and it's exactly what I think is going on.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/aaadde63-a2c1-4128-8d11-f94d2453f6a2/dfsr-member-is-waiting-for-initial-replication-for-replicated-folder-and-is-not-currently?forum=winserverfiles

I want to tread very lightly when trying to fix this because I do not want to affect the data on Server A.  What solutions are recommended?  Server A is a Windows 2008 R2 Standard Server.  Server B is a Windows 2012 Storage Server.

How is this even possible? Folders out of sync. Backlog command says in sync.

Two 2008 R2 servers.  Been running DFS-R for about a year now.  Generally no problems.

If I run the DFSRdiag backlog command on either server, for one particular folder, it says there is no backlog.  The only problem with that is;  on one server there are 11 files in that folder, on the other server, in the same folder, there are 15 files.  How is this even possible!

Issue with drive space not being reclaimed after delete or move operation

$

I have been having an issue with drive space not being reclaimed after files are deleted or removed. I am running windows server 2012 r2 and the volume having the issue is on a storage space pool. The pool consists of 4 2TB drives setup with parity. The volume is fixed, not thin.

Every time I delete or move a file, the free space does not change. I have tried restarting, running defragment and optimize, running powershell optimize-volume with defrag and slabconsolidate.

If I run a slabconsolidate on the volume it returns an error:

Optimize-Volume : A general error occurred that is not covered by a more specific error code.
At line:1 char:1
+ Optimize-Volume d -SlabConsolidate
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (MSFT_Volume (Ob...4-8464-4773...):ROOT/Microsoft/...age/MSFT_Volume) [Opt
   imize-Volume], CimException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : HRESULT 0x89000020,Optimize-Volume

If I run dir /p on the volume, it shows what the free space should be, but it is not the free space reflected everywhere else. I cannot copy anything to the volume greater than the space it thinks is free.

Anyone have suggestions on what could be the problem?

Windows 2008 R2 domain - how to allow anonymous access to 1 folder share?

$

Hi,

II'd like to know if there is any truly working solution for establishing an anonymously accessible file share on Windows 2008 R2 (SP1) server running Active Directory (domain controller) and File Services.

I've been crunching through all google hits on that issue and seems nobody has gotten it to work unless the Guest Account was enabled (not an option for production domain controllers).

So far I tried all this to no avail, server keeps prompting me for username/password when I try to access such share from non-domain Windows computer:

1) created a folder, e.g. ASHARE and shared it under the name ASHARE$ ($ so it stays hidden from public)

2) assigned both share and ntfs permissions allowing full access to EVERYONE, GUESTS and ANONYMOUS LOGON

3) edit Default Domain Controller GPO to make following changes (under Local Policies Security Options and User Rights Assignment):

-enabled policy "Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously" and put "ashare$" on the list

-enabled policy "Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users"

-disabled policy "Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares"

-changed policy "Access this computer from network" and added ANONYMOUS LOGON account to the list

-made sure the policy "Deny access to this computer from network" does NOT include any of: Everyone, Guests and Anonymous Logon accounts

-checked policy "Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts" and this is disabled by default, but it doesn't have impact on Domain Controllers anyways.

-checked policy "Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares" and it is currently disabled (and should be unless I am reading it backwards?)

what else left?

The server still keeps prompting me for password when I try accessing \\server\ashare$ from any non-domain computer/user account. why is that so, what am I missing here? it should be a simple thing! I just need public dropbox folder on this File Server...

Server 2008 R2 - Extend Partition .. space not showing available

$

Good morning all -- have a question about extending a volume on Server 2008 R2.

The volume is an iSCSI target using the Microsoft iSCSI initiator -- the iSCSI device is a Dell MD3000i.

The volume was originally 500GB.  On the MD3000i, I expanded the space from 500GB to 1TB -- this went fine without any issues.  Once the space was expanded on the MD3000, I hopped on the server and saw the available unallocated space on that drive..  So, I followed the normal MS guide to extend a partition using the unallocated space -- I used the command prompt, diskpart, method instead of Disk Management GUI.

After extending the disk (which went fine without any issues), I can now see Disk Management reports the drive as 1100GB instead of the original 500GB.  However, when I go to My Computer, it still only shows the disk as being 500GB.  When I right clicked on the volume to check the properties, it still showed 500GB but it didn't look right -- I recall some a couple of the areas just showed 0 bytes even though the disk was working and was usable.

After rebooting the computer, the problem still persists -- I did run a 'chkdsk /R G:' so it could find/repair any errors -- this fixed the 0 byte errors I saw on the drive properties.

It should also be noted that from the MD3000, it is showing the volume as a 1100GB target instead of the original 500GB (so that looks fine).

Any reason why this additional space is not available for use?

Why are the files created from application in windows 2008 without any file owner?

I notice that whenever my java program is moving files to a folder, there is no owner assigned to that file. How is that possible? Now I am not able to move that file to some other folder except delete.

Any way to assign ownership to the file before moving the file itself.

Thanks in advance.

Deduplication setting on volume keeps reverting to 'Disabled'

Hi,

I have a 2012R2 Std server with 3 x Dedup volumes and one of them has reverted back to a Dedup setting of Disabled, twice now. This also clears all of the excluded folders in the dedup exclusion list.

Any ideas why this could be happening?
