Users open shared files but they get an error that file is already open when actually its not

$

we have a windows 2012 r2 environment with a hyper-v cluster with 4 virtual servers (2012r2) that are located on an hp storage.

users in the office work on windows 7 pc's and sometimes (more than once per day) when they try to open word or excel files from a shared folder they get a message that the file is already open so it opens in read only mode and they cannot save it. we are pretty sure and tested that that folder is not open from any other user, because some users tried to open files randomly back from 2012 and they got the same errors again.

i cannot reproduce when i want the problem. i may try reopening files for an hour without having problems.

i tried also to write down the hours that the users may have mostly the problem but i couldnt figure a specific time on the day that the problem occurs.its random.

i want to also notice that we have symantec backup exec 2014 and taking backup on tapes and on deduplication folder with the advanced open file option set to "let VSS to select automatically the provider"

the file server does not record any events in system or dfs replication tab. they only events we got once per 1 or 2 days are in the application tab and its exactly this "the volume recovery was not optimized because an error was encountered: the file move failed 0x89000016) event id 257,defrag"

i hope i gave u an accurate description of my problems. i really have to solve this.

Hardware upgrades to DFS replication partner

Hi All,

I have 2 DFS servers.  They are setup in a primary/secondary situation with users all connecting to the primary server of which the secondary server is a replication partner.  I have plenty of disk space on the primary server but now need to upgrade the disk secondary server.  For this I will need to take down the existing disk array on the secondary replication partner.  Does anyone know how I go about this?  Is it as simple as removing the replication partner, putting in the new disk, seeding and then setting up replication again?

How do I initiate a scrub of a ReFS drive or ReFS SS mirror?

How do I scrub a ReFS disk, or a ReFS + SS disk?  There are checksums on the disk, and from what I read Windows verifies the checksum when the data is read and alerts if the file is corrupt, and it also scrubs the data in the background when idle. I would like to initiate the scrub by clicking a button or running a command.  Is that possible?

I am trying remove the StoragePool using the remove-StoragePool PowerShell command but getting the error - The storage pool could not complete the operation because its health or operational status does not permit it.

So, I try to set it to read-write using set-StoragePool command but getting the following - Access denied.  I am running the PowerShell as the local administrator.

Please see the below output.

DFS folder target showing wrong site

$

We have 1 DFS server running 2008 R2, for some reason a few of the folder targets are showing the wrong site name. The ones that are showing incorrect when you go to the properties of the folder target and click share permissions it gives this error message:"Information about the shared folder cannot be retrieved. This shared resource does not exist". All the folder targets that show the correct site where the DFS server resides are working correctly. If you go on the server and view the shares in Server Manager, they work correctly. I have tried to delete the namespace and recreate it but it comes back with the wrong site name. I even tried creating a "test" namespace and it still using the wrong site name for the folder target. I can view the share folder permissions and ntfs permissions. We recently upgrade AD to functional level 2012, we aren't sure if this had anything to do with the issue we are now seeing.  I am at a complete lost why this is happening. Please help.

Where the disk space goes ?

Dear all,

I understand this might be a dump question but I really need a solid answer for my boss.

On Windows Server 2008 R2 I checked the disk space of Drive C is 278.1 GB, Free Space 260.6GB and Used Up Space 17.5GB. When I dig deeper on the used up disk space on different folders and sum up the number is just 16GB, shows like there are 1.5GB disappearing nowhere, and my boss want to know where is it.

I am think that may goes to some hidden system files, but may I ask if there's any effective way to sort it out ? Any hint would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Kenny

SMB signing not working?

$

Hi,

We are looking to force SMB signing on all our servers and workstation to tighten the security. But so far in my test setup it does not work.

We have number of 2008 r2 machines plus mixed Windows 7 and XP environment.

I have created a test 2k8 r2 server with File Server role installed and a windows 7 x64 machine as a client test.

Both machines are part of our live domain.

I have applied group policies and confirmed for them to be correctly applied only to those two machines to test behaviour before roll-out to the company.

I prepared those GP to test fail in communication.

The following settings were applied to my test machines:

2k8 R2 with File Server role:

Microsoft network server:
  • Digitally sign communications (always) ENABLED
  • Digitally sign communications (if server agrees)DISABLED
Microsoft network client:
  • Digitally sign communications (always) ENABLED
  • Digitally sign communications (if server agrees) DISABLED

    and on windows 7 machine
Microsoft network server:
  • Digitally sign communications (always) DISABLED
  • Digitally sign communications (if server agrees)DISABLED
Microsoft network client:
  • Digitally sign communications (always) DISABLED
  • Digitally sign communications (if server agrees) DISABLED

According to my knowledge this should result in Windows 7 machine not being able to open a share in the target server with error: “System error 1240 has occurred. The account is not authorized to log in from this station." but the share is being open without any problem.

Could anybody comment on why W7 machine can open the share while it should have been blocked?

Thank you

DFS Namspaces - 2012 R2

Hey,

We've recently upgraded all our domain controllers from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 (same hardware though and it was a clean install (with proper decommissioning), not an in place upgrade), and every now and again some users will get disconnected network drives when logging on.  On checking the DFS root (\\domainname\dfsroot), only 1 share seems to be visible when this happens which explains the disconnected network drives.

Interestingly, in the most recent case (just now), if I check the DFS tab for the 1 visible folder, it listed all 4 of our domain controllers rather than the 2 file servers it normally does.  Not sure if it's a coincidence but I changed the active server to another DC and it kicked back into life.  I then set it back to the previous active server and it was fine still.

We have:

2 sites
2 domain controllers in each site (all 2012 R2 and all running DFS-N)
1 file server in each site (both 2008 R2 and both running DFS-R with replication)
30Mbps fiber-based leased line between sitesWindows 7 Pro clients everywhere

Any ideas?

Thanks

DFS-Namespace Server managing

Hi..

In my test lab i have created 2 DC with DFS. When i create a NameSpace from 1 server and try to manage the name space from the 2nd server while 1st server is down i cannot Manage it. I also did "Add name server" from 1st server.

Is this normal or am i doing something wrong.

I followed this tutorial:

DFS Step-by-Step Guide for Windows Server 2008 https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732863(v=ws.10).aspx

Thanks and Regards.

Creating new Namspace

When we create a new namespace the wizard asks for

Namespace Server:

(Enter the name of the server to host the namespace. The server can be a domain controller or a member server.)

Here we can only enter 1 DC name. Does this means that every time i want manage the namespace my DC that i mentioned in Namespace server must be alive and working?

How to monitor DFS login prompt problem? (share corruption)

$

Twice we have experienced problems with our DFS shares, both times we discovered that there was one server with a share problem. If we tried to open a share from that server we got a logon prompt. The fastest fix was to rename the DFS folder and the new one was replicated in minutes.

There was about a year between the first and the second time we had this problem.

The problem is that our Citrix environment is built on DFS shares.  Both times when we got this DFS problem we couldn’t find the cause straight away, it took some hours to discover it was DFS. This problem got a big impact on our production environment.

Lately I create a lot of Powershell scripts that checks the status of something. If we got a problem with something (like Exchange) then I search for the symptoms of how I can recognize it with Powershell. The output of those scripts is returned to the monitoring tool Nagios.

I want to create a check for this DFS problem, so when it occurs we get an alarm from Nagios and we can fix it right away with less impact for our users. The problem is that I don’t have a lot of information about recognizing the symptoms of this DFS problem. The only thing I know that there is a login prompt of accessing the share on per server.

The second problem is that I can’t test it, because I can’t and don’t to force a corruption on the DFS share.

I found someone that created a check based on writing a file to a DFS share and checked that date stamp of the file. For now it is my best option.

I’m wondering if there is someone that got a better idea or if somebody does know more symptoms about recognising this specific DFS problem. (Events (we couldn’t find them), errors in a log file)

When I disable Windows Vault via group policy, it does not disable the storage of Generic Credentials

Hi,
I need to disable Windows Vault entirely. When I enable the group policy "Network access: Do not allow storage of passwords and credentials for network authentication", it disables the caching of Windows Credentials and Certificate-Based credentials, however, it does not disable the caching of Generic Credentials.
How can I also disable this? Am I on the right path, or is there another way to do this?

Thank you very much.

MoveSecurityAttributes in Server 2012 R2

Hi,

Does anyone know whether the MoveSecurityAttributes registry setting should work in Server 2012? In 2008 you could enable this to make moved files/folders inherit permissions from their parent. But I can't get it working in 2012.

2008 needed a a hotfix (kb/2617058) to get it working, though - reckon I can install this on 2012?

(can't add links till I'm verified, sorry)

Cheers,

Andrew

Trying to merge unallocated disk space to virtual disk

Hi All,

Running a Scale out File server on Server 2012 R2.

I am covering for a co-worker and one of the virtual disks have run out of space. So I extended the virtual drive to a desired size but now I can’t merge the two. In the volumes -> disks window it shows the capacity of the virtual disk as correct but also shows the new amount (the amount that I just added) in the unallocated column. So how do I get the unallocated to merge??

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks.

unable to access domain server from non-domain server through windows explorer

I have two Windows 2008 R2 servers. One is in the domain and the other is not. I am able to access non-domain server from domain server through windows explorer using ip but not the other way around. I am able to ping the ip of the domain server from non-domain server with no problem but unable to get into the domain server through windows explorer from non-domain server. I am able to browse to the same domain server from anywhere inside the domain using windows explorer.

When I did diagnostics, it says:

Issue found

Your computer appears to be correctly configured but the device or resource (x.x.x.x ip of the domain server) is not responding.

I know for sure that the file and printer service is turned on on the domain server because I am able to windows explorer into the domain server from any computers inside the domain.

Any clue or suggestion that I can look into the issue?

Thank you very much!!!

0x80070002 error when entering server share path in 'run' box

Hi there,

On our 2003, domain joined 2008R2 servers, and W7 workstations we cannot access a network share by putting the path in the 'run' box like \\servername\share.

The error that appears is (translated): Network Error. 0x80070002. Cannot find the specified file.

But, when browsing the network via the GUI I can open the share and I'm also able to map the share with net user: y: \\servername\share....????

The XP workstations are not affeted by this problem.

Already checked DNS etc and I am puzzled now.

Anyone?

Files shares randomly display "Location is not available"

$

Hi all,

I recently set up a windows 2012 file share server for departments and user folders. I've pushed the drive mappings out via group policy and on my laptop they work flawlessly. On everyone else's computers, they're hit or miss. Group Policy is currently mapping the drives based on IP address (i.e. \\172.31.255.250\shares\departments). As an example, this share will map to a user's device and it will be accessible. Periodically, they will no longer be able to access it and receive a "Location is not available" message. However, if I navigate to the DNS name (i.e. \\servername\shares\departments) it will work. If that location becomes unavailable later on, I can still access it via FQDN (i.e. \\servermame.domain.com\shares\departments).

More information:
- Using my account on my laptop, I never have an issue with my network drives.
- Signing in to another laptop with my account, I experience the same issues as the other users.
- All of our computers are running windows 8.1 pro and are currently up to date.

GPO configuration:
Action - Update
Location - \\172.31.255.250\shares\departments
Reconnect - True
Drive Letter - Use S:
Hide/Show this drive - Show this drive
Hide/Show all drives - No change

Edit:

I'm seeing this in the logs and don't know why it would be happening:
The user 'S:' preference item in the 'Map department folders {3B0FD149-D2DD-440B-A68D-8A137558F393}' Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x800708ca This network connection does not exist.' This error was suppressed.
