Finding the elusive "not saved" file

$

Hi,

we have a rather concerning and frustrating problem which i don't really know how to tackle. a few users (not many) are reporting they have saved a file, and the next day they come to open it but the file is back to how it was before they saved it. there are no errors during application close (its not just one application it is different software from different vendors), and the problem can not be replicated on demand. at first glance you might think the user clicked "no" to the save dialog box, but the people in question aren't that gormless and they know how important their modifications are.

we have a file server which holds a lot of data, this FS data share is mapped to users computers (J drive), we do not enable offline files, or "make available offline" for this share. three people have experienced this problem, one does use folder redirection with offline files, whilst the other two don't.

the first area i looked at is the server, we have three types of backups; incremental hourly, full backup daily, shadow copies at 7:00 and 12:00. looking through all these backup points i can see the modified dates run chronologically so there is no "reverting" back to a previous point, however it would appear that the file's modified date in question jumps from one day, to the next, even though there was a modification performed during this timeframe.

to me, this indicates that the write never actually made it to the server, the client never presented any failure or error message - the user assumed the save was successful, closed the file and went home. the next day she opened the file and realised all her work from the previous day was gone. yet she can successfully save to this location because i can see the modified date from today and last saved by her username.

to illustrate, here is a table below of the file in question based on our backup points and the modified time stamps

you can see in each type of backup the file never got reverted, however somewhere during the highlighted time-frame from the 19th May at lets say 12:00... until 16:00 that day, theUser 2 made a change to that file and saved it, but as you can see the file was modified the day before at 12:28, then user 1 modified it at the end of the day at 16:36 - where was User 2's modification between 12:00 and 16:00 on the 19th?

this is extremely worrying because we don't really know if saves are occurring or not. I would imagine the problem may lie on the client side, but there wasnt a forum for Windows 7 storage, i'd imagine you guys would know more. I did attempt to look into the NTFS log file but i dont really know what i'm doing there or how to extract it, file saves aren't written to the event logs either so it makes it very difficult to know what's going on. if there were an easy way to just pull off the NTFS transaction logs on both server and client then maybe we could get somewhere but I am not having any luck with that.

anyone ever experienced such a thing??? I never have, I've used Shares, SSD, HDD, SATA, SAS, Virtual Disks - never had this kind of problem, this is new to me. As i understand it, when an application saves a file, the disk has to acknowledge that first and return the success to the App, only then will the app close... so the file must have saved somewhere or the App wouldn't have closed, they say they never discarded the changes and I believe them.

thanks

Steve

Admin shares on a Windows 2008 R2 server not accessable from Primary Domain controller

When trying to connect to one of my member server from the primary domain controller that it is a member of, I cannot access the administrative shares. EX:\\server\C$ or \\Server\F$. I am able to access all other shares from the same domain controller and am able to access the admin shares from other servers.

The error I get is: Windows cannot access \\server\c$ (in the details section if you click the down arrow it show error code: 0x80070043 The network name cannot be found.

Seems strange to me that the admin shares are accesible from servers other than the primary domain controller and all other shares are accessible to that same DC. I have taken the server off the domain and rejoined, disconnected everyone from the share manually and cannot for the life of me figure this out. I need to get this working to be able to use DFS over my WAN. Please let me know if anyone has dealt with this issue and has found a way to resolve it.

Server 2012 R2 Essentials Shadow Copies: Command "vssadmin list shadowstorage" Results Contradicts "Explorer > C: > Configure Shadow Copies..."

I am having several related problems configuring shadow copies on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

1.  From Explorer I right click on the system drive (C:) and choose "Configure Shadow Copies..."  This will not let me move the location of the shadow copies to drive F:.  I disable shadow copies and then, from settings, try to locate it on drive F: and the only choice I'm presented with is drive C:.

2.  From a command window (as Administrator) I run this command:

vssadmin Add ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=F: /MaxSize=UNBOUNDED

This completes successfully.  I return to Explorer and once again right click on drive C: and choose "Configure Shadow Copies..." and it still reports that shadow copies are disabled (I disabled them in 1. above).  I return to the command window and type this command:

vssadmin list shadowstorage

This returns the following (slightly edited to show only the results I'm interested in):

Shadow Copy Storage association
   For volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a360912f-247d-499b-bda3-d06f06caff3f}\
   Shadow Copy Storage volume: (F:)\\?\Volume{738c4ec4-e55d-4745-9fe4-bdc389ff08
2d}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 bytes (0%)
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 bytes (0%)
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED (922215667%)

I reboot the machine and Explorer > C: > Configure Shadow Copies... still reports that shadow copies are disabled and vssadmin still reports that they are enabled and on drive F:.

What gives?  Why is there a contradiction between vssadmin and the Explorer GUI?  How do I schedule when shadow copies occur if the Explorer GUI shows the feature is disabled?

Migration 2003R2 to Windows 2012R2 file services now finding file corruption

$

We recently migrated from our windows 2003R2 file server environment to 2012R2.  Ever since the migration we have experienced file corruption on multiple types of files.  (.mdb, .pst, xls)  The majority of these files have been access DB and email .pst archive files. (I know .pst files not supported)   The error messages for the .mdb files are typically "Your  networks access was interrupted".  For .xls, it would just indicated that the file could not open.

Both of these volumes are setup to dedupe.  I've read some articles that say that deduplication could be the issue and that you can exclude certain file types/extensions from deduplication.  In checking the current deduplication, there are some exclusions but not for .mdb, .pst or xls.

ExcludeFileTypeDefault  : {edb, jrs}

NoCompressionFileType   : {asf, mov, wma, wmv...}

I've read some articles that suggested that the problem is that SMB is the issue and that I should disable SMB 3.0.. Others commented that you should not turn off SMB 3.x on the server because you would loose many of the benefits that SMB 3.x provides and that it may cause other issues.  The clients are all running Windows 7 Pro, and on the server it shows the access from the clients are v2.10, which is the default for Windows 7.  There were some patches for 2012R2 to turn off Leasing, which is described as another form of Oplocks.. I did install this patch but the corruption continues. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42738

We also ran chkdsk /scan on the two drives that the user files are located. On one of the drives, it did find some errors. "Volume Bitmap is incorrect".  After a reboot, and a rerun, these errors have been cleaned.

Another strange thing we noticed is that both drives that we are having these corruption issues on are being deduped.  (get-dedupvolume |fl ) It clearly shows that both are enabled.  The weird thing is that only one of the drives listings are blue, the other is the default black.  Shouldn't windows explorer list them both in blue?

We're at a loss on what to do next.. Any suggestions on how to start eliminating possibilities to find the solution?

For the migration, For the most part, we followed these instructions http://blogs.technet.com/b/josebda/archive/2014/11/05/migrating-file-server-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx

Can't view DFSR Health Reports in IE 10 or IE11

As a part of monitoring our DFSR infrastructure, I generate health reports on a weekly basis and have them emailed to me.  The DFSR reports require IE in order to be viewed.  On top of that, they require IE9.  While I was able to display the page in compatibility view, in IE 10, I'm not unable to do this in IE 11 and I'm left unable to review my reports without using a separate computer.  I posted this hear because it seems about time that the DFSR reports get a refresh and get compatible with the latest browsers.  In the meantime, how would you suggest I go about viewing my reports?

Failed to connect to WMI and DCOM errors

Not sure if I'm asking this in the correct place, but here we go.

We monitor dfs replication using a script that runs dfsrdiag, and it has been failing with "Failed to connect to WMI Services on computer %RemoteComputerName%", if you check the System event log, when this fails there is a DCOM error 10028 "DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer %RemoteComputerName% using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID 10c8 (C:\Windows\system32\dsfrdiag.exe)

The computer that the script is running on is a Server 2012 R2 DC/file server. It has no FSMO roles. The far end server is a 2008 R2 file server. Neither server can communicate in this manner with each other. They are able to ping each other (on different sites/subnets), Windows firewalls are disabled and all traffic is permitted across the hardware firewalls in place.

If I reboot the 2012 server, I am able to successfully run the dfsrdiag command for a short period before it starts failing again. Please can someone point me in the right direction to get this fixed, I've not yet found anything that will resolve this issue.

Strange Bsod. It have error on symEFA64.Sys but when I disable the MSiscsi service then Bsod disappear

Hi at all,
I have 5 physical servers and after the patch update in May when I rebooted the servers 3 of them do not start and show the BSOD
with Stop 0x0000007E (0xffffffffc0000005e .......) and error driver symantec symEFA64.Sys.
After several trials starting in safe mode the servers have begun to function only after disabling the Microsoft MSiSCSI service.
I use
this servicefor iscsi initiator to be able to use the iSCSI disks that I have set up on a NAS and make windows backup of the servers.
If I enable again
the serviceMSiSCSI get back the BSOD with the usual error and signaling the driver SymEFA64.Sys.
On the other 2 server the MSiSCSI service is active and servers work well.
The servers are all in various versions of DELL R720, R710, R410, R420 and a PE840.Operating systems are all win2008r2 and one is a win2012r2.All servers are fully patched and with service pack. The two servers that have not had the BSOD are the R420 with win2012 and PE840 with windows 2008R2.
What do you think?

Powershell command(s) to replace failed drive in storage pool?

I have my -RetireMissingPhysicalDisks set to "Always" and my -RepairPolicy set to "Parallel". Does anyone know the command(s) to replace a failed drive in a storage pool or do I even need to issue a command(s) since my -RetireMissingPhysicalDisks is set to "Always"?

Also, is there an Event ID(s) that I can trap for to be alerted when a disk fails in the future?

Thank you!

Not able to figure out what exactly causing this issue.

I have done Antivirus scanning, but nothing found.  (From Server as well as from Client --(Mapping share drive)  - )

Please find attached screenshot for more details.

I have gone many of forum, it says ransom virus.  cryptolocker.  Tried with Malware tools and antivirus nothing found and nothing could recover.

Tried recovery softwares also.

There is no option from server to store previous version so tried from client windows 7 machines but there also unable to restore

Copied files to freshly installed machine and with all updated of windows and antivirus tried to recover but not succeeds.

I have been struggling with my email setting in FSRM. I have verified the following:

Exchange Server Settings:

Hub Transport has a Receive Connector defined as follows:

  • Network > All Available IPv4 Address  Port 25
  • File Server IP is in the list of servers to receive mail from
  • Authentication > Externally Secured is selected along  with Transport Layer Security
  • Permission Groups > Anonymous Users and Exchange Servers are checked.

FSRM Settings on File Server:

  • Email notifications-
  • SMTP Server > IP address of my Exchange Server
  • Default email address: my email address
  • Default "From" > FSRM@SERVERNAME.domain

Test emails fail eveytime...

Any ideas?

What is causing this huge DFS backlog?

$

2008R2 DFS between 2 file servers. 2-way, 24x7 replication, full bandwidth.

Usually daily (sometimes every other day) we are experiencing a huge backlog between our DFS servers of 150000+ files. We haven't yet been able to figure out where this backlog is coming from (we're thinking maybe offline files is doing something). The backlog eventually catches up and everything is fine...until it happens again. This affects users working at both locations as files that are updated at one location don't make it to the other location until the entire backlog clears.

Is there a way to find out WHERE this backlog is being generated from?

TIA!

Delete orphaned replication groups

$

I had replication setup between a 2008 R2 server and a 2003 server. The 2003 server crashed and was replaced and is no longer available. When I open DFS management on the 2008 R2 server, the groups (4 of them) still exist. If I right click a group it gives me the option of "Remove Replication Group from Display" but does not allow me to delete the group. The message I get is The replication group cannot be queried. The replication group cannot be found. I would like to delete the groups and then recreate the replication to a different server. How do I delete these old groups? I don't want to just remove them from the viewer. In searching for answers, I have found one or two threads that address the issue, but none of them give an accurate explanation of how to do this. For example, one post said to delete a node in adsiedit, but that node does not exist. If needed, I can uninstall replication from the server and reinstall it, but will that actually delete the groups?

Thanks.

DFS-N Folder replication on select folders in tree

$

Hi!

I'm going to deploy DFS-R in my orginization soon. One thing that has come up is the possability to replicate selected folders in the current DFS-N structure. I will try to explain, and hopefully someone can help me answer this ;D

Current Env

OS: Server 2012r2

Server at HQ: S1

Server on remote site: S2

Scenario

On S1 there is a DFS-N setup (\\domain.local\Share1) pointing to \\S1\Share1. This DFS-N is mapped to a drive (G:) on both sites. Deep inside this share we want to replicate one folder (\\S1\Share1\FolderA\FolderB\FolderC) to the S2 server. So that when the remote site mapps (G:) and traverses the folders down to FolderC we want them to access FolderC on the local S2 server.

Is this even possible? If so, how?

Thanks in advance

Daniel

Clustered Storage Spaces & Fibre Channel

Guys,

did anybody implement working configuration with Clustered Storage Spaces built from FC disks? With a SIMPLE spanning volume on top (no need to have fault tolerance)? Technically it would be RAID0(Storage Spaces)-over-RAID5(hardware).

Thanks! :)

Cluster Storage

We have three hyper-v host server (windows 2012) in cluster environment. We have SAN which is mounted as cluster-storage on all three server. Hyper-V1 has ownership of the disk.

Recently we increase the disk space on SAN volume and it reflect in the cluster disk but not in the cluster volume. It shows the correct size in the disk management on all servers, but does not show in the cluster-storage.

Please see the attache screenshot to understand more clearly.

Can someone help me how can I resolve this issue?

Thanks

Diskpart Convert Basic Window Server 2008 R2

Diskpart offers the option to convert a drive to basic

[I know that this is a destructive process so please don't bother posting this information].

If I try to run the command on a dynamic disk that still contains partitions I get an error from the Virtual Disk Service: "The disk is not empty"

If I select the partition in DiskPart and try to delete it I am told that "The operation is not supported by the object. The specified command or parameters are not supported on this system."

If I delete the partition in Disk Manager, the drive is automatically changed back to basic!

So when can you use the "convert basic" command?

Can't change Win7 libraries location from Windows Server 2003 server

$

0

I'm having trouble understanding why I can't change the location of my Windows 7 Pro user libraries.

All of my libraries that matter (My Documents, Downloads, Desktop) are located @

\\server1\users\USER

The Desktop and My Documents libraries are synced with Windows Sync Center and are located @

\\server1\users\USER\My Documents (& Desktop)

On the Windows 7 machine, I can't use the 'move' function normally there. The location field is filled (with locations above) but I can't edit the locations, and there's no move operation.

So, I thought about manually moving them and then changing the registry location of the library, but I'd rather fix whatever permissions problem there is and use the stock libraries tool. I posted here because I can change the library locations for my other libraries (e.g. Contacts or whatever) using the normal Win7 move function found in the Properties of the library.

I inherited this Windows Server 2003 environment and it's on the way out. Trying to get everything off of it before I disconnect--this Win7 machine is last and I am so excited.

What am I missing?
Thanks for any help!
