Hyper-V Server 2012 Replication Group between Server 2012 and 2012 VM

$

I have just completed a new config that is using Server 2012 Standard as  a HYPER-V server. Under this server I have created a VM with Server 2012 as the NOS. I have a second server with Server 2012 Standard that is being used for our File Server exclusively. I have created Replication Group between the File Server and the VM. Both running same Server 2012 Standard, Using DFS, I have created a successful Replication within the group. Happy...up to this point!!

I have found that I can create a folder on the File Server and it replicates the folder on the VM. That is good. However, if I create a Folder on the VM Replica server, the Folder does not Replicate back to the File Server. I was assuming this was a two service where not matter which server had files or folders created, they would be Replicated. Am I missing a step or perhaps there is something amiss with my network? Please let me know what you know.

Thanks,

Duggan

Storage Spaces Disk Failure Notifications

Hi there,

I work with backup & recovery systems on a daily basis & am always seeing disk failures - it comes with the turf, high data turn over means more wear & tear... Now Server 2012 I'm a big fan on & I thought "Why not give Storage Spaces a chance"... At present I'm facing a critical flaw... notifications of disk failures... I can't see any easy out-of-the-box solution in place.

Is there something I'm missing? All I want is email notifications in the event of a disk failure & also some visible notification when I log into the server to say "Hey... dead hard drive, fix your $"

I don't want to have to rely on the Hot Spares & the manual checks to catch something as critical as disk failures.

Kind Regards,

Si

robocopy /EFSRAW option fails with "The specified file could not be encrypted"

I am trying to replicate a large encrypted file system (EFS) folder full of thousands of files from one Windows 2008 R2 server across a WAN to another Windows 2008 R2 server on the same domain.  I have read that DFS does not support encrypted file system, so my next best option is robocopy.  Unfortunately for some reason, the EFSRAW command, which is supposed to facilitate the copying of encrypted files, is failing me.

When I issue the following command:

robocopy F:\LocalServerAFolder \\ServerB\SharedFolder myfile.txt /EFSRAW

I receive error message:

ERROR 6000 (0x00001770) Accessing Destination Directory \\ServerB\SharedFolder\ The specified file could not be encrypted.

This occurs regardless of whether I use the /EFSRAW option, and regardless of what user account I execute it as (including domain admin and the encrypted file owner account).  Oddly, using the regular copy command works just fine, but the copy command won't suit my needs for keeping these two large folders in sync day-to-day.

When I robocopy to a local path it works.  When I robocopy from ServerB (pull) across the network, it does not work.  So it would appear that any time I try to traverse the network, it does not work.

What am I doing wrong?

How to reinstall print spooler service

Hi

I have a windows XP printer with an HP printer attached to it. 99% of the times I have to restart the computer (restart the spooler service) to get the printer to print. I have downloaded the latest drivers for this and even run SFC /scannow to try and repair the spooler service. I have changed the USB port but nothing is helping.

I found a knowledge base article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000007 but when I tried to run it on my XP Pro SP3 it tells me that it cant be run on that version.

I am about to format the pc. Can anybody assist me with how to "reinstall" the spooler service before I go down the fornatting road??

File Server Resource Manager - Email Notification

Hi,

I configured E-Mail notifications fort the FS Resource Manager (Quota Limitations…), as I wanted to send a Test E-Mail I got this “Failed to send the test e-mail due to the following error: Cannot send the email due to an error. Check the application event log for more information.”

Event Log:

-----

A File Server Resource Manager Service email action could not be run.

Error-specific details:

Error: IFsrmEmailExternal::SendMail, 0x8004531c, Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender

Event ID: 12306;

After searching the web for this error I tried some thinks like give send permissions ecc.

As it turns out you need give send permissions to the computer running FSRM. You need set this send permission on the mailbox you specified in the “Default From e-mail address”. To do this, type the following command from the Exchange Management Shell:

Add-ADPermission -Identity "MailboxName" -User "DOMAIN\Computeraccount$" -ExtendedRights "Send-as"

But the command didn’t work for me

My Cms-let:

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Add-ADPermission -Identity "mymailbox@mydomain.com" -User

 "mydomain.local\administrator$" -ExtendedRights "Send-as"

Error:

Volume shadow information taking up lots of disk space

$

So I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine running and I've noticed it keeps losing a lot of disk space lately.  I finally ran a program that scans your HD and shows all the files and its sizes.  It showed my volume shadow information was using 85GB of my free space.  So I went into the volume shadow copies and it showed it was disabled, but that it was using 85GB of free space.  I opened command prompt and typed in vssadmin list shadow storage and it showed this:

So I went back into the volume shadow copies box and I changed the maximum size from no limit to 320MB.  Once I did that it purged all the volume shadow information and gave me back the 85GB of free space.  So my question is why was shadow copy storage actually using space and creating these files when it is disabled on the server?  Is there something else I'm missing here?

Windows 10 client to Server 2012 mapped drive intermittent access error

I installed a new server for one of my clients a few months back (new Windows 2012 Server). At the time, all of their local workstations were running Win 7 with no issues.

Now, one of the desktops was upgraded to Win 10 and the user intermittently gets the error:

Location not available

S:\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or Internet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, if might have been moved or deleted

The other PCs in their office running Win 7 do not get this error. The user says all he has to do is click "OK" and then he can access the mapped drive, but the error keeps returning from time to time and he wants it fixed.

What could have changed in Win 10 and also what can be done to resolve the issue?

Why is Network Discovery Disabled?

On a Server 2012 R2 Std configured simply as an only DC with File Sharing role, the Network Discovery is off for Domain profile and have to resort to manually configuring services that support discovery.  Without discovery, shares that are created under the role can't be found by workstations by browsing from an application that wants to open files (Like QuickBooks).  What dangers are lurking after I reconfigure the requisite services and firewall allows?  I solved the problem, but wonder what liabilities come with the solution.  Thank for any insight.  Ref KB 2722035.

File Server Resource Manager - Sending E-Mail

What is the name of the executable that is responsible for sending e-mail from File Server Resource Manager?  We have migrated to Windows Server 2012 R2, and McAfee Antivirus Enterprise with ePO.  Need to exclude the executable for File Server Resource Manager from being blocked from sending e-mail.

Thanks.

extending volume on 2008 R2 space not showing

$

After creating a new logical drive and then extending the volume using the disk management GUI the extra space is not reflected in the console or in explorer (though the console does show the drive as being part of this spanned volume). However, when viewing volumes in diskpart the spanned volume shows the entire space. The original logical drive was a dynamic disk and the new logical drive was a GPT.

Anyone come across this before and know a solution short of formatting?

Random problems copying data from network share

$

Hello,

In our firm we've got on a Windows 2012 file server different shares for our application data : one share for each office.

Since a while one of the shares is giving random problems, so in 1 office.

When we try to access this share - also from another office - we get a screen where credentials are asked.    This behaviour is random, so sometimes it works fine and sometimes we get this screen.

We use a program for which data is downloaded and uploaded which is giving these cirumstances a lot of frustation for the end users in that office.

Full UNC path or via the mapped drive (F:) doesn't seem to make much difference.

Does anyone has a suggestion what the cause may be ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi :)

Can someone explain what (no compression) rows in DDPEval report means ?

Data Deduplication Savings Evaluation Tool

Evaluated folder: E:\Test
Processed files: 34
Processed files size: 12.03MB
Optimized files size: 4.02MB
Space savings: 8.01MB
Space savings percent: 66
Optimized files size (no compression): 11.47MB
Space savings (no compression): 571.53KB
Space savings percent (no compression): 4
Files with duplication: 2
Files excluded by policy: 20
Files excluded by error: 0

According to report above I can conclude that I will gain space savings for 66% but do not understand rows and values in report for (no compression).

Thank you.

DFS Regularly does a complete resync - Why?

$

We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 server which DFS replicates our main shared drives to another server at a different site.

The server has a few hundred thousand files on and for some reason, regularly decides to replicate everything. This then causes a backlog on user changes and users who are sharing data and connected to different replicas dont see these for a few hours while the replication finishes.

Can anybody advise a way of diagnosing what is causing the content to resync? I've looked through the DFS debug logs but there are hundreds of them and each one has 200000 lines. It really is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Windows 2012 File Cluster Deduplication Issue (Garbarge Collection not working)

$

Hi

I have a 2 node Windows 2012 Standard File Cluster with 5 cluster roles.  I have about 250TB of storage present to the cluster split down into lots of smaller sizes.  One of my colleagues enabled Data deduplication on one of the drives, the drive in question is 30TB in size.  Something happen over a course of 48 Hours and used up all the free space.

My problem is I have moved around 1TB data of the drive to another Drive but windows is still reports there is no disk space.

I have run the following command from powershell but it has not helped.

"start-dedupjob -volume <DriveLetter> -Type GarbageCollection -Full" and "start-dedupjob -volume <DriveLetter> -Type GarbageCollection -Full -Priority High".  Both times I can see the job has been scheduled and is running with "Get-dedupjob" but the job just sites at 0% progress, I have left the job to run for 5 hours and still no change in the progress and no disk space reclaimed.

I have read on another forum to turn off Deduplication and then run the Garbagecollection again but when I turn off deduplication within seconds it has been re-enabled, almost like it does not turn it off.

This is a major issue for me and if anyone can help that would be grate.
