Event ID 12317 Anyone?

$

Hello, If I am posting in the wrong place I apologize.  I've already posted windows server general with no responses.  My problem is below and before you read it please note: This event occurs EACH hour AND I do not have DFS setup or enabled so I can't use the reg hack I found online.  Anyone have ANY Sort of clue as to what this could be? If I could get a starting point that would be extremely helpful.

Hello, I am having the same issue with a few variations.  I am getting Event 12317 and it occurs 1 time per hour.  So I get about 24 of these a day (including during the evening).  I am not using DFS so there is no reg key to disable for this issue.  I have a Windows 2008 Server R2 Standard 64bit OS which is a file server.  It does have the Hyper V role installed with 2 virtual machines.  I have found a lot of questions surrounding this event but I haven't found one that includes the same environment variables or frequency which I have.  Any ideas outside of opening up a Microsoft Support Ticket.  I am using SEP 11.0.6005.562 on this server and on my clients.

How to setup iSCSI?

Hi,

I was looking at, for training purposes to create iSCSI system on WIndows Storage Server,

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/video/how-to-setup-iscsi-on-windows-server-2008-11-mins

The video refers to Windows Storage server 2003.

I have Technet Standard subscription and the download options are:

Windows storage 2008, basic(3.3 GB) which I installed but it does not have option to create iSCSI

Windows Storage Server 2008R2 embedded, iSCSI which is executable, 900MB and when I run it on above server does not do anything.

I wonder if you may guide me to proper software,

W2K8 R2 SP1: Can not access NAS due to error 0x80070035

Hi,

very strange problem here. We aren't able to connect to several NAS on the same subnet from our virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machines which are running on Hyper-V 2008 R2 Cluster. We always get error message0x80070035 network path not found.

When we try to connect to NAS from physical Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine it works like a charm. It seems to be that only our hyper-v machines are having this problem.

After some searching on the web we found a hotfix but it is already included to SP1 and won't help here. All other suggestions on the web like enabling Computer Browser service or changing NetBios Settings didn't help yet. We also checked firewall settings on both virtual and physical machines and found no differences.

We are using SCFEP 2012 on virtual and physical machines and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter as OS.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

Thank you very much,

André

Please Help! Can't copy/delete files - requires permission from current user

Hello All,

I'm trying to copy a folder to another location on Server 2008 R2 and every time I do it tells me that I require permission from domain/administrator and then will not proceed. The thing is that I am logged onto that server as domain/administrator so this makes no sense to me. I have taken ownership and ensured that domain/administrator has full control security permissions and the folder is not shared. I have also tried disabling UAC on that server.

Can anybody help me figure out a way to copy this folder? The data in it is critical and cannot be redone. Help would be greatly appreciated!

ICACLS Syntax issues with backup / restore

I am doing some testing with Windows Server 2008 R2 with NTFS permissions.  I have a d: (multiple folders and sub-folders) drive with an existing ntfs permissions.  I want to make a backup of the settings using icacls so I can restore when needed.

So, here is what I am doing and the issue:

1.  Open an elevated cmd prompt.

2.  Run "icacls d:\ /save ntfsDdrive.txt /t /c" without the quotes.  No issues.

3.  Run "icacls d:\ /restore ntfsDdrive.txt" without the quotes and I get the following:

d:\D:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;S-1-5-21-1229272821-2

Any assistance is appreciated.

Disk quota size not displaying on mapped drives on Windows 7!!! This is supposed to work in win2008/win7!!

We have quotas set up on a Windows 2008 file server using FSRM.  Windows 7 clients with mapped drives to the shares are not displaying the quota size 'usage', rather they are showing the entire volume size usage.  I have been banging my head against google for several days now and can not find a solution.  Everything I find are cases involving windows XP clients and all seem to point to a limitation with XP and SMB 1.0...and quotas being set on the root of a share rather than subfolders with a share.  I have tested applying a quota in both scenerios....neither will display the quota size to the mapped client drive.

Windows 7 is supposed to be SMB 2.0 and NOT have this limitation with displaying quota sizes on mapped network shares.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Distributed File System Replication DFSR The content set was not found error

$

Well I've reached the end of my rope with this one. Our replication server worked fine for months with no issues. All of a sudden it stopped working. We tried everything we could think of, disabling/enabling the replication server, deleting/readding the replication group, making sure one was set to primary, reinstalling DFS, deleting the System Volume Information\DFSR folder ect. Nothing is working.

What is really wierd is that it only fails on our D: drive, meaning that if we setup replication on a folder within the C: drive, it works perfect! If we setup the replication folder on our D: drive, it does not work. The problem only affects 1 of our servers. Replication works perfectly on all other servers, and on the affected server if the replication folder is setup on another drive. On the affected server, the debug log shows the error:

20121210 15:21:05.293 1940 SRTR   957 [WARN] SERVER_EstablishSession Failed to establish a replicated folder session. connId:{CC5E21CC-29A0-410E-8108-B98936753A7A} csId:{7D55E528-165E-4EA8-A009-F907BF9E1838} Error:
+ [Error:9028(0x2344) UpstreamTransport::EstablishSession upstreamtransport.cpp:808 1940 C The content set was not found]
+ [Error:9028(0x2344) OutConnection::EstablishSession outconnection.cpp:532 1940 C The content set was not found]
+ [Error:9028(0x2344) OutConnection::EstablishSession outconnection.cpp:476 1940 C The content set was not found]

Other servers report:

+ [Error:9027(0x2343) DownstreamTransport::EstablishSession downstreamtransport.cpp:4179 7628 C A failure was reported by the remote partner]
+ [Error:9028(0x2344) DownstreamTransport::EstablishSession downstreamtransport.cpp:4179 7628 C The content set was not found]

We also noticed that the System Volume Information\DFSR folder does not get recreated for the D: drive, but does get recreated on the C: drive on the same server. We've troubleshooted as far as we can and are stuck. The problem seems to only occur with a replicated folder on the D: drive. I saw a KB that looked similar, but it seemed to HyperV/snapshot related.

I will say that I think this started after we did a clean install of Server 2008 R2 several months ago, but used the same data (D:) drive but we can't be sure becuase we didn't notice it until now becuase this server was replicating only for backup purposes.

Changing DFS replication folder properties using dfsutil.exe

I have a DFS share which isn't replicating .bak and .tmp files , In order to fix that I need to add  "," in the file filter of the "Replicated Folder" properties.

I am looking for a way to do it via command line, either using DFSUTIL.exe or anything else. So far I have not gotten anywhere.

Please advice a way where I can add/remove the extensions via command line.

Migrate from Win2008R2 to Win2012, Shares/Permissions, Files & DFS

We have an Existing win2008R2 server that has 150 Shares, 6 TB of Data, 3 Different DFS Namespaces and 3 Replication Groups with about 25 replicated folders among the 3 namespaces.

I have a new Win2012 server that I'd like to setup to replace the Existing server.   New server has its own Storage that I want to replicate the data to.

What is the best way to copy all of the shares/Permissions, and add the new 2012 server to DFS to be a new member and start replicating all of the data?

As a bonus, It would be great that when the replication is completed to the new server that I can rename the new server to the same name as the old server. If its messy to rename a DFS server, then I can live with it. The Old File DFS server is a DC, and I cannot demote it yet.

Thank you

how to automatically send fax to incoming calls

In windows 2008 fax server role is there any way to send a predefined file like pdf or docx as outgoing fax to incoming calls automatically?

If NOT, is there any third party application as fax server that have this ability?

Thanks

Problem with renaming a folder in a redirected location - duplicate folder created. Win7 concurrent sessions on different PCs.

Hello Everyone,

We are using Folder Redirection, Offline Mode and Roaming profiles with Windows 7 x64 workstations. Many of our staff have more that one workstation that they use on the network concurrently.

In this scenario encountered the following issue when renaming a folder located on a redirected location (e.g. Desktop, Documents etc).

1. User is logged into both PC1 and PC2.

2. Using PC1 user creates folder on the desktop called "Test_Folder", within this folder they then create a new text file.

Result: The same folder and contents are now displayed on desktop of both PC1 & PC2

3. Using PC2 the user renames "Test_Folder" to "Test_Folder2"

Result : PC2 displays the renamed folder "Test_Folder". PC1 now displays two folders "Test_Folder" and "Test_Folder2"

We have noticed that ;

  • If the folder is renamed on the same PC that it's originally created on, this issue doesn't occur
  • If the folder is empty when it's renamed the problem doesn't occur.
  • Files can be always be renamed without problems.
  • If a manual sync is triggered in Sync Center on the affected machine the issue is successfully repaired (i.e. the original duplicate folder is correctly removed).

We have tried the following to try and fix this problem, without success;

  • Installing latest hotfixes KB2714014 & KB2761645 associated with offline files.
  • Using the Group Policy setting to "Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files”
  • Searching through forums etc

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated !

Thanks, Makes

moving dfs from one domain controller to another.

we have 2 domain controllers and on one (DC1) has the shares and DFS root. I want to move the DFS root and the shares to (DC2) and after the move test if users can access the dfs shares.

if all goes well i want to remove DC1.

they both are win 2008 R2. is there a way simple way beside creating the shares on DC2 and reconfigure the DFS?

track folder/size growth rate

As a DBA I often need to watch SQL server disk space. I got alerts then I request more from network engineer. Sometimes the manager ask me to give a report of database growth like the increase rate by month of last 6 months.

Like the drive we have

E:\MSSQL\Data
F:\MSSQL\Log
G:\DBBackup

I know I can do something like to query backupset table to find out backup file growth.
and can query sys.masterfiles and then save into a table , collect by each month.
I don't have a script or process of doing this yet,

But would like to know from other admin, what is your method of doing this? The simpler the better.

Basically I want to give them a history of size growth in above 3 directories?

Any tool, or script?

thanks

What is the maximum size limitation of the DFSR database?

$

As I understand it, there is one DFSR database for each Volume of replicated data regardless of how many replication groups are included. Is there a maximum size limit for this Database? Is there any logical reason relative to the size of the database to limit the volume size and/or the amount of replicated data per volume?

Namespace and DFS Share access issues

$

Please bare with me as this could be a long post! The basic issue is, sporadically some users are unable to access network shares from their PCs. Sometimes a reboot fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't, some days users log on fine, other days they don't, this effects different shares at different times even on the same machine so share-1 works but share-2 doesn't.

The set-up is as follows:

Local Site (spectrum house) 2008 level domain

DC1 - hyper-v client PDC GC etc Server 2008R2 SP1
DC2 - Physical server GC Server 2008R2 SP1
FS1 - hyper-v client file server 2008R2 SP1
All clients are in this site, windows 7 with latest service packs and some xp clients
A number of other servers such as mail servers and print servers

Remote site (Live disaster recovery system in case of local site failure) - (UKGrid DR-Site)

DC3 - hyper-v client GC Server 2008R2 SP1
FS2 - hyper -v client server 2008R2 SP1
One or two other servers such as mail servers

Sites and services set-up correctly with all IPs and subnets as far as I can tell

Namespaces - all are now 2008 mode as I have recently recreated them all

domain.local\share-1 (\\fs1\share-1 - \\fs2\share-1 same format for the below)
domain.local\share-2
domain.local\share-3
domain.local\SQLBackup
domain.local\profile share

namespaces replicate using DFS between FS1 and FS2, I have set the clients to not use out of site servers (FS2) as its an over the internet link and would be slow for file access but access may be required at FS2 site when I setup a terminal server there.

the symptoms, when a user logs on, one or more of the shares will not be accessible, as if the network is not found, if I unc to\\domain.local\share-1 the error message is

windows cannot access \\domain.local\share-1
check the spelling of the name, otherwise, there might be a problem with your network...

If I unc to \\fs1\share-1 I can access all shares fine

If I unc to \\fs2\share-1 (in this example) from an effected computer I am seeing\\fs2\share-1 refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network.....

I can unc to other servers and all shares fine from a non effected computer such as a domain controller or the other file servers, however some client machines cant UNC to FS2

DNS Appear to be correct I don't see any traces to any old retired domain controllers 2003R2 x64 that we used to have but may have not looked in the correct places

we have not had any server problems like this for months and our old domain controllers were dcpromoed at least 4 months ago, the only change we have had recently is a new stack of dell switches PowerConnect 5548 POE, we have also moved offices which seems to have been when the issues started (had to move all servers from one location to another)

no other problems seem to have arisen.

In order to troubleshoot I have installed DFSutil on my windows 7 machines and here are some of the responses from the app

from an affected client machine

NTLM authentication and cluster config

I was referred to this forum after asking a question related to cluster configurations. You can see the original thread here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverClustering/thread/663d7e78-8bee-4871-806f-7968f78df2b3/

Essentially, I was running the cluster validation tool after creating a cluster (because it completed successfully pre-cluster creation) and the following appeared:

Validating access using Server Message Block (SMB) protocol from node machine1.testlab.local to a share on node machine2.testlab.local.

Failed to validate Server Message Block (SMB) share access through the IP address of the fault tolerant network driver for failover clustering (NetFT). Validating access using Server Message Block (SMB) protocol from node machine2.testlab.local to a share on node machine1.testlab.local.

Failed to validate Server Message Block (SMB) share access through the IP address of the fault tolerant network driver for failover clustering (NetFT). The connection was attempted with the Cluster Shared Volumes test user account, from node machine2.testlab.local to the share on node machine1.testlab.local. Access is denied.

Someone there tried to get me to access the administrative c$ share using identical local accounts on each machine and the IP addresses but I kept getting "access denied" errors. I moved the machines to an OU without any GPOs applied to try to see if something in AD was hurting access but that didn't resolve the problem.  The user then suggested I check the security event log and the following appears:

Audit Success 12/10/2012 7:56:55 AM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 4634 Logoff
Audit Failure 12/10/2012 7:56:43 AM Microsoft Windows security auditing. 5140 File Share

He wasn't sure where to go from there and pointed me to this forum. Does anyone have an idea of where I can go from there?

Exclude 1 user or group of users from audit logging Server 2008 R2?

When a server backup is run, the user credentials used for the backup agent accesses every file on the server and fills the security log with notations of its access to every file and folder.  This is a waste of time and disk space and makes it harder find other events we want to track.

We want to audit/log files being added, modified and deleted by users, but not audit every time the backup agent accesses files during a backup or restore job.

How can auditing of a volume or share be set up so events are not logged on activity of specific user accounts?

Wrong Disks Placed In Storage Pool

I'm trying to create a basic storage pool running Windows Server 2012. The Primordial pool only contains two drives, PhysicalDisk5 and PhysicalDisk9. These are the only two drives in the system that do not have volumes or data, so this is correct. When I create a new storage pool it asks me to select the drives that will be used. Both disks 5 and 9 show up, and I selected both and created the Storage Pool. However, after creation the storage pool contains PhysicalDisk7 and PhysicalDisk9. This is a fairly critical error since PhysicalDisk7 has an NTFS volume and is 97% full already. I can verify that it is selecting the wrong disk because both disks 5 and 9 are 3TB while disk 7 is 2TB. Strangely enough, PhysicalDisk7 does not go offline when this happens, and the Primordial storage pool no longer contains any disks, even though it should still have PhysicalDisk5, if that wasn't used in the pool. Anyone have any explanation, or is this just another Windows bug?

Uninstalling DPM agent from a Server Core

I rebuilt my DPM server and now I'm in the process of installing the agent on my clients. I didn't uninstall the agent before rebuilding now I'm getting the error "agent installed from another DPM server, please uninstall and reinstall agent". That is simple enough to do on a full install but what about a core install? There is no uninstall file on the CD and I can't open up the control panel. What can I do?
