Clarification on clients fail back to preferred targets

$

we have two servers in a client DFS folder target. Servers are in different AD sites. So if Server 1 goes down and we dont have clients fail back to preferred targets checked then it will use server 2 in an different site and continue to use that server indefinetly even if Server 1 comes back online?

Allow Users to view all folders in a network share but only be able to access the ones they are given permission to

Hi,

I need to setup a folder share where users can see all folders in the share, but can only access the ones they are given access to. I currently have it setup where the user canonly see the folder/folders they have access to (be it R/W or R), but management wants them to be able to see all folders, even if they do not have access to them.

I'm wondering what would be the best way to set this up. I've read some sites that say to use Traverse, but so far I haven't had any luck with it.

Does anyone know how to set this up or has set it up this way?

Thanks

J

Failover cluster / Storage Replica - disks fail when copying large data portions

$

I'm having a failover cluster with 2 servers. Both servers have 2 disks; 1 800GB for data and 1 20GB for logs. Of course these are GPT disks and I'm able to build a cluster and create a file server role.

I've used Storage Replica to replicate the 800GB disks. This works and I can host the file server role on both nodes in the cluster. I've created a share on the fileserver role and added some data to this share. No problems so far.

Now I want to copy more data to the fileserver role, but when doing to the replication will fail after having copied some GBs of data.

The event log of the cluster gives the following error:

Cluster resource '29382f4b-948c-4768-acc6-10fea296553a' of type 'Storage Replica' in clustered role 'SR Group 1' failed.
Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

I can bring the disks online again and start the Storage Replica role, but I don't want it to fail.

In case someone wonders; I did run the "Validate Cluster..." wizard and I passed it.

HA File Server with a Share-Nothing model

Tested DFS (Windows Server 2016) but it really unstable with large files (20 GB+).

Need to have a highly available File Server solution where each node has independant storage located in two local Datacenters (same premises).

Thought about Clustering Services (AlwaysOn) and Storage Replica and Scale-Out File Server.

Had done in the past MS-SQL on AlwaysOn spread on 2 datacenters with Share-Nothing model and worked great, now can I use the same for File Services? or what other MS native solution do you recommend?

Enable WPD Denied Write Access not working on Windows 10

Dear expert,

We recently need to apply a policy to all computers to deny users to copy data to mobile phone. I turn on the group policy to enable the WPD: Denied Write Access on both computer configuration and Users Configurations on Group Policy Editor and then push update the policies. However, even Windows 10 users received the policy updated, the user still can copy data to their mobile phone.

Appreciate someone can help and advise how we can solve this Windows 10 issue. The policy working fine on Windows 7.

Storage Replica on a hardware RAID setup?

Hi there,

I'm looking into implementing Storage Replica in a server to server set-up.

I've read the documentation on Storage Replica, RAID is mentioned. However the page does not explicitly state that a hardware RAID setup is not allowed.

So I'm wondering if using a hardware RAID card (Dell Perc H710) is supported.

Thank you for any clarification on this matter!

Monitor a Windows 2016 Work Folder server to ensure that all Work Folder clients are successfully synchronising

Hello Guru's

We have a very large Enterprise Customer who uses Work folders.

We need to know how we can remotely monitor a Windows 2016 Work Folder server to ensure that all Work Folder clients are successfully synchronising. We have come across a technical article from Microsoft that states a Windows 2016 Work Folders server no longer supports the 'last successful sync' stamp for a user. We have had a case with our customer whereby a user had 70GB of data in their local client Work Folder folder but the data was not synching back to the On Premises server. Had the user lost or had a technical issue with their laptop then the user would have lost all their data.

The statement from Microsoft below was made in the technical forum article below.

Microsoft Statement - For Server 2016, we removed the LastAttemptedSync, LastSuccessfulSync and the SessionID info because it was not accurate

https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/azure/fr-FR/21be7c07-ca37-4d73-95b1-e437ff5a5bba/windows-2016-workfolders-monitoring?forum=winserverfiles

The main reason for asking the question above is that if the statement above from Microsoft is true then it would render any attempt to gather Work Folder client/server  sync information inaccurate.

Thanks in advance

Issue with OPlocks

Hello,

I've been fighting with an issue where a windows 2016 file server is taking ~19 seconds to break an oplock.  This file server is hosting our UEM configuration for our VDI environment, and when the client is reading the .ini files the server will occasionally respond with a status_pending attempting to release the oplock.

I've seen the behavior through wireshark as well as procmon on the server itself.  I've attempted to disable leasing, on both sides of this, as well as set the timeouts as low as i can without any change in the behavior.  Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior or have any suggestions on how to get around it locking read only files?

Windows 7 Domain PC cannot connect to shared folder on Windows 2019 Standard

We have setup a new Windows 2019 Standard Active Directory server with shared folders.

We have many windows 10 PC's which I joined and was able to get into the shared folders.

Windows 7 PC's will join the domain but cannot access the shared folders.

It does not matter if a domain admin or domain user is logged in to the PC, the message we get is "Access Denied" if the user is on a Windows 7 PC.  If they are on a Windows 10 PC, the connection works.

SMB1 is disabled on the server.  SMB2/3 are enabled.

I explicitly turned off SMB1 client on the Windows 7 PC (rebooted) and still get the same answer - SMB2/3 is enabled on the PC.

I do not believe the issue is a simple "Access Denied" however.  I performed a Winsock trace and the trace indicates a lot of errors on the client side.  at the time of the attempted connection.

On the server side, the Audit logs indicate a successful account login at the exact moment of the attempted connection.

Is there any help someone can give me on this?

Server 2012 Shares freeze

$

Server 2012 Standard
Hosts AD, PDC etc.

Shares access from clients (Win7, Win10) will randomly 'freeze', and will not become available again until a server reboot

SMB client log on the server is showing error 30809 described as <Guidance: The server is responding over TCP but not over SMB. Ensure the Server service is running and responsive, and the disks do not have high per-IO latency, which makes the disks appear unresponsive to SMB. Also, ensure the server is responsive overall and not paused; for instance, make sure you can log on to it.>

There are no error logged in the applications log or system log.

Any ideas as to cause or remedy?

Thanks, David L.

Issues with Storage Migration Service

$

Hello!

I am currently in the process of testing Storage Migration Service, as I am planning to perform a migration from an old Windows Server 2008R2 file service to a server running a newer Operating System.

However, the product does not work. At all.

I can run through all the inventory steps, and pass the validation with only warnings.

However when I come to the Transfer Step, the operation fails with the message: "Couldn’t transfer storage on any of the endpoints."

Checking the event logs for the Storage Migration Proxy shows the message "Error 50 Operation not Supported"

User being used on both source and destination is a domain admin and a local admin on all server.

User has Full Control NTFS permissions.

Even the computer account is a domain (and enterprise) admin, this was done as part of the troubleshooting.

None of this has resolved the issue.

So can anyone on this board tell me which "operation" it is that is "not supported".

S2d 3 tiers question..

Hello

I have an s2d deployment where I have nvme as cache. I have also SSD and HDD as capacity.

I Thought that s2d handles SSD and HDD capacity automatic and moving data (hot, cold) between these two.

But when I Create a volume (I use windows admin) I can choose between SSD and HDD.

Does it move hot and cold data even if I have this option?

I also tried to use both ssd and hdd in one volume. Se resultt

Windows 10 Sync Center - Conflict office files creates a [filename]~xxxxxxx.tmp

Hi,

I'm being told to post here. Below is the link to the thread i posted:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/662be346-4d19-4e1a-9d34-ae7cac075345/windows-10-sync-center-conflict-files-creates-a-filenamexxxxxxxtmp?forum=win10itpronetworking

I am in the midst of migrating all workstation to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Pro. Our Domain Controller is also a File Server running on Windows 2012 R2. All staff's Desktop and My Documents are redirected to the file server \\servername\home$\%username%. Roaming profiles and offline files are enabled on all users. So far we have no issues with this setup for windows 7 users. However when tested on Windows 10 Pro machine, a weird behavior occurs.

Whenever a user edit and save an office file offline (at home), and connect back to the network (the following day), they will always get file sync conflict and .tmp file is created in that folder. See picture below.

When i check in the file server, the original file has been renamed to ~RFxxxxxxx.TMP suffix (or maybe the original file was deleted and then the .tmp file was created).

Because of this behavior, i am given 2 option to resolve this conflict. 1) Keep this version and copy it to the other location 2)Delete the version in both location. See below:

Of course i will choose option 1 which is to keep this version and copy it to the other location. Doing so, the latest copy of the file will be copied to the file server BUT the .tmp is still there. As such i have to manually delete the .tmp file.

Imagine doing this everyday for notebook users. It is quite annoying.

Any help will be appreciated.
