I don't have more letters available to create new volumes

$

Hi all,

Can you help me with this, I have assigned all letters assigned to a volume, but now when I try to create more volumes, the "manage drive letter and access paths" saids "there are no available drive letters"

The real problems is when I try to configure DFS with other server, the only way to set DFS is using a driveletter.

It's possible to fix this problem without modifying al previous volumes?

I was checked this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-2000-server/cc938934(v=technet.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

but i have a question, It's secure for my filesystem if I create mount points for new volumes in c:\Mountpoints (this is an example), cause c:\ is where we have installed the SO.

Thanks for your help, this problem is new for me.

Best practices rights managment on folders

Good morning guys and girls,

Let say i have the following structure:

Map 1

Map 2.A

Map 2.B

I have User.A and who can only read Map 2.A, he doens't need to see info in Map 2.B

My questions when i give basic list permissions:

And i set the rest of the autorisations (read) on Map 2.A It gives and Acces denied on Map 1.

So is the following the right way to implement:

Map 1 (Group_List, with List folder/Read data permissions) contains (Group_Map2A, with Read Permission)

Map 2.A (Group_Map2A, with Read permission)

Group_Map2A, contains User.A

Or do i need to work with Traverse folder with the list folder/read?

May thanks

Windows Search on Fileserver 2019 does not find all documents

Hello everybody,

recently, we migrated our fileserver from a Windows Server 2012 R2 over Windows Server 2016 to a new Windows Server 2019 VM (fully patched). There are about 120,000 files of all sorts stored in the main file server share. We used Windows Server to have a fulltext index of the documents, running on the fileserver itself. This worked just perfect for many years.

Now, we find that the index service says it successfully indexed about 120,000 files. The index files take about 600 MB. Event Log says nothing about any problem with the Windows Search service. However, if I search for a single word (say, "angebot" in German, which means "offer") in a folder where several documents named "Angebot Product XY Variant 1.docx" with "1" ranging from 1 to 5, none of these documents show up in the search results, besides the fact that not only the documents themselves contain the word being searched for but even the file name starting with that word.

We tried to install the Office 2010 Filter Pack (x64) on the server and rebuild the index, but it did not change anything. Still, search results are way too few, and no error message is visible to clients or in the event logs. This is regardless of whether we search from a file server client (having a mapped drive to the file server share) or directly on the file server in its local folder. The folder has been included in the indexing service's configuration. SYSTEM (the account the Windows Search service runs under) has full access to all files. File full names are no longer than 217 characters. Users have change permissions on the folders. And, as said, this has worked for years in older Windows Server releases.

What could we do to make the file server fulltext index work again as expected please?

Best Regards, Stefan Falk

Server Setup - Minimum roles needed

Business:  5 employees

Current Server:  Win 7 Pro, 2 x 500Gb SSD, RAID 1, 8Gb memory

A small company uses a Win 7 desktop as a file/app server for their business software.

With the end of life of Win 7, and the need for a new server, they will purchase a entry level server and MS Server 2019 Standard (suggested by the business software vendor, I thought a Win 10 Pro computer would suffice but this is frowned upon by the vendor).

All employees have access to all files (only 5 employees).  their are no groups so levels of security is not needed.

So would it be better not to deploy Active Directory (AD) and DNS?   Just use the server as a app and file server?   The database used is about 10Gbs.

Should a domain still be setup (but is that possible without AD & DNS)?

It is a legal practice so I want to be safe.  They want to keep things super simple and not worry about what user account needs to be deleted and a new user account added.

Thanks!

DFS replication cause missing files

Site A                                                                                              Site B
File Server A  <--- 2 ways synchronize using DFS replication --> File Server B
Both File server in the same Domain: abc.com
Both File server is using Windows 2008 server

I only setup the File Server A as refereral targer folders. No referral folder was enable for File Server B. By right, all data in File Server A will synchronize and overwrite the data in File Server B.

Unfortunately, from time to time, some user reported their files goes missing. The worst is, some user even just modify their file and press save then close. When they want to go back to the file again in few minutes, the file is missing. After further troubleshooting, I found that those missing file was automatically move to a hidden folder called DfsPrivate\ConflictAndDeleted. Then I have to manually move those files back to original place. I noticed under the DfsPrivate\ConflictAndDeleted there are at least 2 to 3 files been moved to this area everyday.

May I know why the files all of the sudden moved to this DfsPrivate\ConflictAndDeleted? The question is, there is no one using the File Server B folder to make changes on any files. Why it consider as conflict and deleted. Can anyone help? I don't want to keeps moving files which is not practical for long run.

Cannot rename folders

Hi,

i noticed some of my colleagues can first modify some folder on WS 2012 but then, maybe after 3 or 4 name change or movement, they receive error. It seems someone has the folder in use.

So i try by mylself, i'm administrator, and i succeed, while they still cannot.

The folder is shared to "Everyone" (Change and Read) both in Sharing and in Security.

Administrators also have "Full Control" in Sharing.

DFS-R warning

Hi All,

just want to seek your advice on the warning that has been consistently appearing on the event viewer of my File Server.

Is this normal or I am missing some configs.

I have 2 folders that are being replicated to our DR site via DFS-R that's why it gives 2 warning every 5-12 minutes.

Server 2019: Resource Monitor & Queue Depth Reporting

$

Hi,

This might be more an Azure question, not sure.

I've recently deployed a new VM in Azure, built with Server 2019. The VM has 2 P10 (128GB Premium SSD's) disks, for a B: drive and a C: drive. The problem I have is this, resource monitor reports them as having very different performance capabilities, including a drastically different queue depth:

(Ignore the entry for D: that's the VM's native temp/cache disk)

Logic would suggest, that as B: and C: are using the same hardware type, they should respond/report in the same way - but they don't (and monitoring resource monitor during some benchmarking clearly shows discrepancies) - is this some aspect of Server 2019? Or should I be pressing Azure support for an answer?

powershell DFSR won't take other credentials

Hi,  We deploy powershell with tools that use the system account.

But the DFSR powershell commandlets aren't designed to take alternative credentials.

I've attempted to utilize the system account but it can't import-module DFSR.

When I try to use a new-pssession with invoke-command i get a GUID error that I can't seem to resolve either.

Anyone else do this and have any ideas?

How to allow only file modification access in the shared folder?

$

I have a shared folder in the server where it has multiple sub folders and files inside. Therequirement is as below

1. All authenticated users (i.e. belongs on any AD group) can access the folder and its contents (i.e. files and sub folders)

2. Users can edit the existing files (such as .txt, .xls, .doc etc.) but can't delete, move and create files and sub folders.

Currently, following the below approach but it doesn't work for .xls, .doc etc. files

1. Granting the Read access to AD group/user which applies to "Folders, Sub folders and files"

2. Granting the write access to same AD group user which applies to "Files only"

3. Adding the group/user to the shared folder.

Please let me know if anyone has any solution to the problem.

Thanks

Creating a virtual disk for SOFS

I am struggling to create a virtual disk for SOFS on server 2016

I have 3 Jbods, each with 3 SSDs and i want to create a 3 column 2 data copy.

However every time i try to create this it fails. It tells me i have the wrong disk setup for resiliency type i want. However why would 3 SSDs per JBOD work?

I can create a mirror with 1,2,3 or 4 columns as long as i dont set enclosure awareness. However as soon as i try to enable enclosure awareness it gives me the error message.

Any help with how this could be set up or what i am doing wrong is appreciated.

BSOD 0x00000ef critical process died Windows Server 2019

Hello ,

this week I had to make a migration from a Windows Server Small Buisness 2011 to Windows Server 2019.

We create a Windows Terminal Server and now all Users work on it.

Data Transfert was fine and the UVHD are on the same Drive than the DATA. The problem :

the Shadow copy was configured on this drive.

every time the shadow copy start the server crashed with the error :  0x00000ef critical process died

after 1 day I saw the link between the the shadow copy and the crash. Now I have disable the shadow Copy and it's work !

my question it's better to save the UVHD on other drive ? and enable the shadow copy just for the DATA ?

thank you for your answer

DFSR - Initial Replicate

$

Hello!

I need some help about DFSR. I created a RG some days ago on a 225~ GB replication between 2 servers in different location. I preeseed files before replication using robocopy. Initial replication went smoothly. Next day I noticed that the initial replication was again ocurring. I asked myself if that was because both servers have a reboot schedule everyday at 06:00. I disabled this schedule, but then the initial replication again started by the 3rd time (by checking 4104 log file). First the log was on the server that wasnt the primary. The next logs appears on the primary server.

I changed the staging quota because there were many 4102 logs.

I am checking resource monitor from time to time and theres I/O for mostly JPEG, PDF files, scanning all the DFS folder. Meanwhile the replication is not working.

I have some others RG and it's not happening with them.

Will the DFS make initial replicate every time if any of members servers get restarted? Or even if the service is restarted?

What about the JPEG, PDF extensions, will DFS check it periodly? They're already compressed as far I know.

Can someone help me?

DFS folders are hidden when viewing locally on server, or via admin share.

I have two Windows Server 2008 servers setup with DFS replication.  This was installed in July 2009 and has been working perfectly since that time.  A few weeks ago I noticed that the replicated folders are no longer visible from the server itself or through the admin share.  The DFSRoots folder appears empty.  The folders within DFS roots are "deeply hidden", I assume the attributes "system" and "hidden" are set.  I have three folders; Admin, Public, Users.  All three folders have the same behavior, and this behavior is consistent on both servers.

The DFS continues to work fine as the files and folders are visible through the share and namespace.  I have noticed, however, that our backup (Backup Exec) only shows "DFSRoots" but nothing under it.  I'm assuming that the files are there, because our backup size has not changed.  I'm assuming these hidden attributes prevent me from seeing the folders/files even on our backup.  Just in case I'm wrong I have set up a SyncBack Pro job that backs up the entire DFSRoots folder to disk daily.  I have no clue if this problem is serious or not, and I don't have the luxury of deleting and recreating the DFS as this is in a production environment.  Any help is greatly appreciated!!

\netdfs open files on DFS-N Server. What are they?

$

Hi, I have a Win2012R2 DFS-N server in a global forest, with a large number (~30) of Open files with path "\netdfs" accessed by the computer account of other servers in the domain, in read+write mode.
The problem is that each netdfs open file is generating ~0.5mbps of network traffic, over a WAN link which is saturating the network link.

I see them here:

  • Computer Management >> Shared Folders >> Open Files, OR
  • Get-SmbOpenFiles

Example of one open file:
PSShowComputerName    : True

SmbInstance           : Default
ClientComputerName    : 10.1.2.3
ClientUserName        : DOMAIN\ZZCOMPUTERNAME$
ClusterNodeName       :
ContinuouslyAvailable : False
Encrypted             : False
FileId                : 1585916677123
Locks                 : 0
Path                  : \netdfs
Permissions           : 1180063
ScopeName             : *
SessionId             : 1580883510234
ShareRelativePath     : netdfs
PSComputerName        : dfsservername
CimClass              : root/microsoft/windows/smb:MSFT_SmbOpenFile
CimInstanceProperties : {ClientComputerName, ClientUserName, ClusterNodeName, ContinuouslyAvailable...}
CimSystemProperties   : Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.CimSystemProperties

DFS-R is not used on this server (but the role is installed).

There are no DFS-R replicated folders on the server.)

I see the network utilization per instance in Resource Manager

1) Can you tell me what these open files are exactly?
2) And is there a way to prevent the behavior without impacting DFS-N?

Many thanks in advance.

Storage spaces NTFS volume over 64TB ?

On ordinary SS (not S2D), is it possible to create an NTFS volume over 64TB ?  Is it safe ?

I don't need VSS, just storage. DFS is not the answer because the data cannot be split to different directories, there would be very difficult to fix overlaps requiring constant manual adjustment.

64TB is like 5 pcs 14TB HDD's, very little. Even mirrored, only 10 drives. Please don't make us wait till next Server release to go for the NTFS maximum of 256TB. We need this Today.

DFS-R - won't replicate a specific folder

I am using Windows DFS-R on Windows Server 2012.   All folders replicate except one.  What would be the way to troubleshoot DFS replication to resolve this?
