Lost files when DFS share was moved

We have three 2008 R2 servers setup for DFS replication . "HQSERVER1" and "HQSERVER2" is located at our HQ, and "BOSERVER1" is located at a branch office.

1 month ago we had replication problems between HQSERVER1 and BOSERVER1 and due to this we decided to move and rebuild the DFS share from HQSERVER1 to HQSERVER2.

We took a backup of the share from HQSERVER1 and restored it to HQSERVER2. And then recreated the DFS-names and targets.
All seemed to be OK until we some Days ago received a case from a user at the branch office, he was missing some files (he didn’t know how much)

I believe his files was stored on BOSERVER1 because he was always working with the files in the branch office.

I checked for the files on all 3 servers, I also checked the D:\System Volume Information\DFSR\Private\{GUID} on all 3 servers without luck.

My guess is DFS cleaned the D:\System Volume Information\DFSR\Private\{GUID} at the branch office when I removed the DFS share. And due to this all files that was not replicated yet was deleted?

We are creating backups on the replicated files on HQSERVER but not locally at the branch office.

Is there any way to find back the files?

DFS Root need to migrate to Cluster servers

Hi,

We have 2 servers running windows 2003 server and installed file services.

One of the server is hosting Domain Root for DFS.

Now we are planning it to move to Clustered servers. Is it possible to migrate Domain Namespace root to Cluster Servers or we can make cluster servers only for Replication Group.?

Thanks, Swapnil Prajapati

DFS Replication service stops every night with Event ID 5014

$

I'm using Backup Exec 2010 R2 to backup my DFS shares nightly. Everything seems to be working fine, except on the branch office server where my DFS shares are being replicated using DFS Replication. On that remote server, I get a message every night for each of my DFS shares as follows:

Log Name:      DFS Replication
Source:        DFSR
Date:          1/13/2012 11:45:04 PM
Event ID:      5014
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      serverName.domainName.local
Description:
The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner <serverName> for replication group domainName\shareName due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:
Error: 9033 (The request was cancelled by a shutdown)
Connection ID: 7CB9D5A9-6312-4B6D-B2AC-92341C319247
Replication Group ID: 6DE88312-E202-401D-81F4-511FA6A3A6FD

The error occurs right around the time that the backup begins on the DFS shares, so I'm pretty sure it's related to that. However, I wouldexpect to see a message more along these lines (copied from the internet):

Event ID=1102
Severity=Informational
The DFS Replication service has temporarily stopped replication because another
application is performing a backup or restore operation. Replication will resume
after the backup or restore operation has finished.

Event ID=1104
Severity=Informational
The DFS Replication service successfully restarted replication after a backup
or restore operation.

Seems to me I have a misconfiguration somewhere. Like I said, files are replicating, everything seems to be working normally, just this continual error message every night.

I have BackupExec set to "automatically select open file technology", maybe I need to have it set to explicitly use Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service instead?

Hi,

I have  an issue with SAN Disk . I have two windows server 2012, both server accessing same storage. I had created 3 LUN and I can see these LUN in disk management utility. My Question is that when I am initializing this disk  error showing "Incorrect function". In event viewer I get a log like "VDS fails to write boot code on a disk during clean operation. Error code: 80070001@02070008". The same error showing even if am trying to initialize using diskpart. In my storage I had created disk to read and write permission. Please help me …..

Impossible to access File server shares using a DNS alias

I am currently testing migration scenarios to replace 2 standalone W2K3 File Servers into 1 W2K8R2 Failover Cluster.

Everything went very well, shares are well accessible as long as I use the new File Server names, but...

... when I try to use DNS aliases (of the old servers), It is getting a nightmare!

First, each time I tried to to connect to the shares using the alias name \\tempsf\ I got an error message prompting for Duplicate name on the network.

I solved this first issue by applying the DisableStrictNameCheckingreg key (see below). The Duplicate name error message disappeared and I was able to access to the \\tempsf\ folder but it was empty however I have 2 shares well displayed when accessing it through the real file server name. Moreover, I confirm that :

  • ping tempsf resolves correctly the real file server name and IP
  • nslookup tempsf do the same
  • net view \\realfileserver displays my 2 shares
  • net view \\tempsf doesn't display anything :-(

Then, I almost tried everything currently documented :

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters Add a new DWORD value called DisableStrictNameChecking and set to 1.
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters Add a new Multi-String value called OptionalNames. Enter one or more aliases, one per line.
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters Add a new DWORD value called DisableLoopBackCheck and set to 1.
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0 Add a new Multi-String Value BackConnectionHostNames. Enter one or more aliases, one per line.

And also the SETSPN:

  • setspn -A host/<your_ALIAS_name> <ServerrName>
  • setspn -A host/<your_ALIAS_name.domain.com> <ServerNname>

But still nothing... Launch date is approaching, I am feeling so desperate...

Any idea? please... Thanks in advance,

Max

PS : Ahh yes, one more thing, we are using a third-party DNS here (Infoblox) but I don't think it could be the issue.

File Sharing / Network Resources

We have a Windows 2008 server acting as a read only domain controller  and file sharing server at a branch office. When the office loses their Internet connection, users can no longer access the shares on this server. As soon as the Internet connection is back, the resources are once again available. No error message is provided at all. It simply creates a blank white window and never populates with anything. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Their shortcuts to these shares are setup as \\IP Address\Share so it is not a DNS issue.

Thank you

[Windows 2003 Server] Shared files per session always bound to 50

$

Hi,

I have a file server that is used intensively by other servers (application servers).

Under the file sharing monitoring, I see that each session is limited to 50 file accessed simultaneously under heavy load (well not so heavy...).

I started tuning the registry of the file server with parameters like MaxMpxCt.

In the Samba negotiation header, I see that the max files negotiated is the one configured, not 50. However in the file sharing monitoring, it is still limited to 50!

- I've read about such a bug with Windows 2000 (MaxMpxCt ignored), but not for Windows 2003. Did you heard about that bug ?

- The Samba negotiation header shows that "Raw mode" is enabled, and "Mpx mode" is disabled. I'm not sure if MaxMpxCt is relevant as Mpx is disabled... But I also configured MinRawConnections and MaxRawConnections without success.

Thank you so much for your help, even simple leads...

Regards, Matthias

Problems with shared Excel files disappearing with DFSR on Server 2008 R2

$

Hello all,

We have a problem while saving Excel files that are "shared" (multiple user editing) in DFS replicated network folder.

Environment:
2 x Server 2008 R2 (hosting shared Excel files in a network share, with two-way DFS replication between them)
The files are being edited on a single primary server ONLY, secondary server is a passive backup and does not accept connections if primary is available.
Users use mainly Excel 2010 on Windows 7, and also some use Excel 2007 on Vista.

The issue sometimes occurs when the users are saving a shared Excel file - the original file is deleted, and the TEMP file is not renamed to the original name, and remains like "2BE72000". I haven't been able to reproduce the issue myself, but apparently this is happening quite often (we have several thousand excel files open at a time, and we get a few cases per day).

The change that clearly triggers this is the DFSR replication. If the DFSR replication is turned on for server folder containing the shared excel files, then the issues start, and go away if DFSR is turned off. We have no problems at all with ordinary, not "shared" Excel files.

Also, no event (no sharing violation, no conflict resolution or other) is logged in DFS log when the original file is deleted and temp not renamed.

Why is Excel sometimes not renaming its temp files? As far as I understand, DFSR does not try to replicate a file if it's still in use (we get quite a few sharing violations). Therefore if Excel still has a lock on file, DFSR will not intervene and wait for Excel to finish what it was doing. Or am I wrong?

We have a changing backlog size. Usually 0-20 items, and at peak times somedays it rises for short periods to 1000 or more items. I have not noticed any correlation between the backlog size and the frequency of shared excel issues. Backlog size and replication delay does not cause a problem for us, as long as no data is lost.

The things I have already tried after searching and not finding anything that fits on the net:
Tuned up DFSR:

W2003R2x64 slow folder browsing to local SAN

We have a physical server running Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 SP2. It has 24GB of RAM, using Xeon E5620s totaling 16 cores. We're using one of two embedded GigE interfaces. This server is located in a datacenter connected via 1G MetroE to our office. The server has a 300GB C: drive (likely 2x or 4x 300GB SAS DAS in RAID1 or 10), and two FC NetApp LUNs (S: and V:, each 2TB). The data in question is on the S: drive, and the Netapp controllers are FAS3240s.

We have users complaining that the server will intermittently bog down and give them the hourglass icon for 10-60 seconds. This morning my supervisor was poking around in the folder structure of the S: drive and it would randomly give the hourglass icon for 10 seconds or more before responding. The delayed folders were various sizes... some folders contained very few subfolders and files, and others contained 100s of subfolders.

I already had Perfmon running every 15s for a few weeks and they complained yesterday about the problem. I don't see a way to attach a .csv to this message, but here is what Excel told me during the reported trouble times. Would it be the queue lengths we need to be concerned with? Should I add more perfmon objects?

copy files from local profile to domain profile

I'm just about to move my office to an active directory domain, it's nearly all set up. However if I want to copy peoples local profile my documents etc. files to the domain profile's folder is the best way to copy and paste using windows explorer or is there any utility that should be used?

File opened in another folder cannot be renamed

$

I'm trying to rename a file that is on the domain network.

No files are currently opened.

This happens sometimes:
  1. Open windows explorer afresh
  2. Nagiviate to the folder is I want to rename that is on the server.
  3. Windows says a file is opened in another window and cannot rename.
What's happening here?
Sometimes waiting for like 15min then returning to rename the folder works.

Is there a solution to this problem?

I tried these:

Method 1:

When you have trouble in opening the file from the client computer, I would suggest you to open the file directly from Server computer and check if you get the same error there as well.

Method 2:

If you don’t receive the same error on server machine, then I would suggest you to place the client computer in clean boot state and then try to open the file.

You can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Note: After checking in clean boot, follow step: 3 from the article to reset the computer to normal boot.

Method 3:

Perform System File Check to fix the corrupted system files on client computer and then try to open the file.

Note: It may ask for Windows DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

Can't try Method 1 as I don't to the Server computer.  However, from what I hear from our IT adminstrator, it is doing the same thing as well.
Tried Method 2 ..But still happening.  No change.
Method 3 seem to work for a while.  I'll see if it behaves.  ...nOPE!  only lasted for awhile. then the problem returns.
Something I noticed, if I wait for a few minutes, I can then rename or move the file.

Rebuilding a 2003 R2 DFS server to Server 2008 R2

Hi,

I have two Server 2003 R2 servers running DFS.

One of the servers is having issues and i want to replace it with a 2008 R2 Standard server.  Unfortunatly i must move the servers name to the new server as there are some standard shares which have yet to be moved to DFS so i cant just add the new server to the DFS.  Its a VMware server and the file stores are RDM so i can just connect them to the new server and match everything back up so the Standard shares will be easy.  What i need to know is if  i can just export the DFS settings from the 2003 server and re-import them back into the 2008?  And if so what do i need to actually transfer?  It replicates between two sites and im worried it will just delete all the data.

We are using domain based DFS and i believe the server I want to rebuild it the root server for the drives.

Thanks in advance for the help.

"DFS Replication service is not installed" but event viewer is showing 4202 and 4204 for the server

$

There are two servers replicating file information, sending member is Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, the receiving member is Server 2003 R2 Standard. There have been no serious problems with this replication set previously.

Running a health report shows an error against the 2008 server, stating that the DFS Replication service is not installed, though the service is running on the server, and has been restarted today.

Running dfsrdiag backlog on either server shows "Failed to connect to WMI services on computer %2008 server%"

Event logs on the receiving server show events 4202 and 4204 (high watermark for staging area) for these two servers?

Can someone help; is replication occurring, or is it broken? Where else can I look for information?

TIA

what is the right dfs staging size?

Can any help me with counting on staging size.

What I have heard when deciding the size of the staging space is the following,

Take the the sum of the 32 biggest file from the fileshare and then add 50% of that space.

One of my shares is right now 250 gb. The 32 biggest files in this share are totaly 40 gb.
40/2 = 20 .

40 gb + 20 gb = 60

Should I have a staging quota on 60 gb then?

How much diskspace should be avalible at least on the harddrive?
this 60 or a another number of gig?

Permissions Disappearing from Folders

$

We are seeing something that I would not expect to be the usual behavior in Windows.  We are running several Windows 2003 R2 servers that contain folders within which we store documents.  We have groups that we give READ only permission to that are listed under the security tab for each folder, however, anyone requiring more than READ only rights is entered directly into the security tab along with their level of rights.  Most, if not all, of the people that we add to the security tab also exist within one of the groups with READ only permissions.  What we are seeing is that a day after giving someone MODIFY rights on a folder by adding them to the security tab, their name has disappeared from the security tab and they no longer have their extended rights beyond their groups READ only rights.  Any thoughts as to why this would be happening?  Thanks! Joseph

How does DFS replicate open files that are read only

$

If I have a DFS folder setup to replicate in a hub and spoke topology where all the spokes are read-only, and a user opens a file (like a word doc or a pdf) from one of the read-only spokes, will that file not be replicated from the hub to that spoke until the user closes the file?

Also, I have the same question regarding mdb files. If an mdb file is opened as read-only will DFS not replicate it until it is closed, even though the user does not have access to make changes to the mdb?
