One of my customers has a Dynamic partition that was running out of disk space. Doing a DOS or Windows Explorer Search only found about 240GB of data files though out of a 1TB partition.
I moved these files to another partition temporarily, and when removed from the original partition no files could be found by DOS dir or Windows Explorer *.*.
I granted myself permission to look inside the System Volume Information folders, and found about 64 files that consumed about 726GB of space. About 42 have GUIDs as file names (no extensions) and are of type "System file". They range in size from about 17GB to 31GB. They were all created one day apart around 3AM (in the middle of the WSB backup), one per day for the past 40 days or so (April 08 to May 16), with a last written time almost exactly 24 hours later.
I can't find anything on the 'net about these. I tried scanning them with Symantec but Symantec just skips over them. Does anyone know anything about these - what they are, where they come from, etc.? Why are they there? How common is this? What is a "System file".
I'll wipe the partition in a few days, but until then, I keep it available in case anyone can get back to me and has questions.
Configuration:
Windows Server 2008-R2, Hyper-V, DPM 2010
This partition was used for daily WSB backups of the C: drive plus a couple of other backups. It has been in used since 2011.
Thanks,
Bob.
Hi. On my File server i have two raid: 1 for system and 10 for data.
I recently noticed that came fake volume Y, and i am not udersantand from where it comes??? And for any folder into this volume I can't set share access.
Hi All,
We have 2 2008R2 DFS servers syncing data between them via numerous replication groups. I noticed that the file size and count was drastically different between some of the folders and the DFS diagnostic report shows 100,000 backlogged transactions. However, replication appears to be working fine and I suspect the difference may be due to .tmp, .bak and .pst files. However, I don't understand why the diagnostic report shows backlogged transactions. Can you advise if this includes changes to filtered files?
Thanks
Alistair
We are encountering an issue with our software in Windows 7 / Windows 2008R2 environment.
Multiple files stay open on the server.
It appears to be due to SMB2 (when SMB2 is disabled there is no problem).
We suspect that the "durable file handles" causes this problem.
Is it possible to switch off this functionality?
Many thanks in advance,
Benjamin
When using Windows disk manager to shrink the disk, it doesn't allow shrinking the partition. Event 259 is in the event viewer so i assume it has something to do with that. My servers configuration has both the C: and D: partitions on the same disk and the problem happens when selecting the D partition and then selecting shrink. I saw another duscussion for this on Vista, is there another solution for Server 2008 R2 that doesn't involve a third party software product?
Thank you.
Hi,
We currently have two DFS servers. The original member server at our site is a Server 2003 Standard (x86), and the new (replacement) server is a virtual Server 2008 R2 Standard (x64) on a Hyper-V host.
I brought the new server online, added the DFS role and added it a a replication member. Once everything had replicated across the to the new server, I started disabling the old '03 member machine and deleting it as a replication member server from within the DFS Management Console. For the most part, it has worked perfectly fine. There are however a few replication groups in the various namespaces that list the old '03 server in the DFS tab, and for some reason it takes a few minutes to open those folders from the namespace - it's almost as if it's still looking for that old member server (which has currently been disconnected from the network), can't find it, so it looks to the new server after a minute or two and opens the folder immediately. There are however other folders in the namespace that don't have the old server listed in the DFS tab, and they open without any delay as a result.
I used this methodology of retiring the old DFS server based on my own logic. I haven't been able to find any sort of "step by step" procedure on how to retire an old DFS server. Firstly, has the method I used been effective enough? Secondly, how can I remove references to that old DFS server to correct this "lag"?
Hi
I need steps for installation/configuration for file server 2012. Best way for migration of file server 2008 to 2012...
Anybody help me in this..
I've configured Server 2012 as a poor man's SAN in my lab environment. My virtualization host is connected fine to the iSCSI target I've created. I have 4 NICs, 3 I have reserved for iSCSI traffic. What i can't do however upon installing MPIO on the server is enable iSCSI support under "Discover Multipaths" as I read in a 2008 R2 guide. The option is greyed out.
Research indicated that you cannot enable it until you have an initiator connected to a target. I have that, and still no dice.
Anyone have some ideas I can check? Most of the information out there is for 2008 R2.
We run currently have a head office with a SBS 2008 server and a remote site that was using RDP but are trying to install a Storage Server 2008 as they mostly only need access to email and some documents so no major need to RDP. We have a dedicated adsl based VPN between the 2 sites.
Is it best to setup a Namespace and then replicate this or just use folder replication and create local mappings for the 2 users at the remote site. The remote site does not have an AD setup and am not sure if that can de enabled on the Storage Server?
I have currently set it up with a namespace and replication but I don't think it's opening at the remote site from the WSS it seems to be opening from the SBS is this because there is not AD or am I missing a setting somewhere to ensure that machines on the same ip address space will reference the right server.
Existing DFSR groups exist and are working. Added a new DFSR group and everything looks fine but not replicating. Looked in the folder and the DfsrPrivate folder was not created. It isn't hidden; it just isn't there. Checked other member server and the DfsrPrivate folder was created. Have tried removing (updating AD) and recreating. Same problem.
Need some help w/ troubleshooting.
Thanks in advance.
I have an automation process that uses Robocopy to copy backups (WindowsImageBackups and other backup files) from my Virtual Servers to a seperate Physical Server (WIndows 2008 R2).
This process has worked great for quite some time - however recently the physical server has started to 'hang'. I am unable to connect to the server remotely, and if I try to log in it hangs. I have even tried shutting down the computer by using the power button - but it doesn't shut down unless I completely power off the system (I left it trying to shut down for 24 hours once). One interesting thing is that there are 3 VM's on this physical box - and they respond normally. I'm able to shut them cleanly down before trying anything with the Physical Server.
After the last hang - I restarted the system and left it logged in (no screensaver) with both Process Explorer and Resource Monitor (on the hard disk page) running. When the system locked up next - I was able to view what was happening via the console.
What I found is that the system was still writing the VHD for one of the Virtual Machines (41.8 gig). Processor Usage was varying between 30 and 70% - so I'm not sure why I still couldn't connect to the system (but might explain why the VM's were still working) - and the local console was non-responsive (but both Proc Explorer and Resource Monitor were still updating).
I checked the log file created during the backup process - and found the following error message from Robocopy: 2011/11/29 06:53:18 ERROR 6 (0x00000006) Copying File B:\WindowsImageBackup\SQL\Backup 2011-11-27 110150\8d06cd49-c574-11de-b39b-806e6f6e6963.vhd
The handle is invalid. This is the file that was still being written to - 6 days later!!! (BTW - that backup started on 11/27 - so it was two days before Robocopy complained - and that is when the system stopped responding).
Here is the Robocopy Command: ROBOCOPY "B:" "\\Server\Backups\%ComputerName%" /e /copyall /v /r:0 /np /mir /b /xd "System Volume Information" "$RECYCLE.BIN" "RECYCLER" "Diskeeper" "Virtual Machine" "System Images" VM /xf *.BAK "Backup.Log" >>%BackupLog% 2>&1
I ran a test copying the file to a non-compressed directory and it worked. So it would appear to be a problem copying to the compressed directory. In searching on this I have seen some issues reported that are similar.
Any suggestions - While I could leave compression off (and have for the moment) - I'm really tight on space and need to see if I can resolve this.
Hi Experts
Recently I have been doing a lot of work in Robocopy on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. We are migrating Terabytes of data and I am looking at ways of increasing performance.
Recently I saw this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2646535?wa=wsignin1.0
My main concern in moving this data is to make sure that all data is preserved. That I have a 1 to 1 copy. With the hotfix applied I can choose /DCOPY:A which copies across Directory Attributes. But does not copy across Directory Data.
My question is what is Directory Data? Do I need it? How can I check I have Directory Data?
Currently we are running Robocopy in a way that makes just the directories with /DCOPY:DA (retaining the directory data) and then later populating the folders using a robocopy using /DCOPY:A.
Thanks in advance
hi guys
I was reading this about DFS Replication. So my question basically is Will DFS Replication work over a NAT?
" DFS Replication might not work across firewalls when replicating between branch offices without a virtual private network (VPN) connection because it uses the remote procedure call (RPC) dynamic endpoint mapper. Additionally, configuring DFS
Replication using the DFS Management snap-in does not work when a firewall is enabled. To enable DFS Replication to work through a firewall, you can define a static port using the Dfsrdiag.exe command-line tool.
Limitations and requirements
Can DFS Replication replicate between branch offices without a VPN connection?
Yes—assuming that there is a private Wide Area Network (WAN) link (not the Internet) connecting the branch offices. However, you must open the proper ports in external firewalls. DFS Replication uses the RPC Endpoint Mapper (port 135) and a randomly assigned ephemeral port above 1024. You can use the Dfsrdiag command line tool to specify a static port instead of the ephemeral port.
thanks a lot
Hi
I just upgraded one of my 2008 R2 servers to Windows Server 2012 Standard (No option for fresh install unfortunately) and I'm encountering a strange issue. on one of the logical drives (not the system one) whenever I open an application file (Such Excel) with a Local Admin group member and trying to save it after I made some changes I get access denied. but if I grant the specific user full control on that specific file the problem resolves.
Another thing I noticed is when I try to rename a file (TXT file for example) I get "you'll need to provide administrator permission to rename this file" and once I approved it the massage stops to pop.
The server is a physical server and logical drive reside on a separate raid group (FYI)
What are my options?

Hello all,
I am having an issue with a few of my users recently regarding mapped drives. We currently have a simple batch file logon script that maps the network drives they need. These are Windows 7 Enterprise machines.
Here is what is happening.
1. User logs on and script runs. Script states that all drives are mapped successfully.
2. Open Explorer and one or more of the drives is not mapped.
3. User can either browse the network to get to the drive, re-run the script to get the drive, or even put the path in the Explorer window or Run box.
4. If user runs script to re-map the drive, user has drive all day long.
This does not happen all the time. Have checked user properties and user account is not locked in AD. I do not see anything in the event logs that is jumping out at me. I do not want to manually map the drive due to users moving from machine to machine at times.
Thoughts? Little help??
Thank you all in advance for your help and advice!
Hello,
I am receiving an error from File Server Resource Manager when I am attempting to implement some quota policies:
"The Quota Management Filter Driver service, or File Screening Filter Driver service is not running."
I have researched the problem and have verified that the filter driver services are running:
C:\>fltmc filters
Filter Name Num Instances Frame
------------------------------ ------------- -----
DfsDriver <Legacy>
Datascrn 0 0
Quota 0 0
Nothing is being logged in the application or system event log.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to solve this problem as I'd like to move forward with quota monitoring?
Thanks,
Matt
Hi
We have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 (6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601) serving as file server. Clients are Windows XP and Windows 7.
The files are being served happily and all of a sudden the server stops continuing on NEW SMB2 connections.
For ex,
A. time0 : connection 1 (and all connections before it) came in and is successfully established and is being served
B. time1: I assume something happens to the internals of server
C. time1: connection 2 comes in and tcp handshake is successful.
D. time+1msec: client sends SMB2 Negotiate
E. time+200 msec: server sends an ACK
F. time+59~sec: Server sends a RST
G. Now all the new connections from same or different clients have TCP handshake go thru and a reset from the server on NegotiateRequest!!!!
H. XP clients work fine to same server means SMBv1 or server resource is not an issue
I. If a client had an ongoing connection from BEFORE B (say connection 1). It still gets served but new connections get reset.
J. The only work around is to reboot the server!! Until it happens again!!
This sounds like something on Windows 2008 R2 SMB2 stack which goes into a state where it intentionally stops taking new connection. Some kind of anti-DDOS behavior or something??
Appreciate any help
