iScsiPrt System Errors

$

Hi

I have a Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2, 64 bit running on vmWare. I connected to a 1TB iSCSI netAPP LUN, and although the storage stays in place, I still notice consistent errors in Windows System Logs in Event Viewer.

Event 20, iScsiPrt

Connection to the target was lost. The initiator will attempt to retry the connection.

Event 34

A connection to the target was lost, but Initiator successfully reconnected to the target. Dump data contains the target name.

Both of the errors appear together every 12 minutes, and although I know the connection is restored and the storage is still available, I am worried that there is something wrong, and it will cause problems for applications accessing data stored there. At the moment there are no applications writing to the storage, I just have some files sitting there.

I have tried disabling firewall, and looking for solutions on other forums around here but without any luck. Has anyone any experience of this exact problem occurring?

Thanks

Bitlocker Server 2008r2 and Raid 10 configuration.

I recently installed 4x2tb drives into my server 2008r2 box. I turned on the TPM chip and setup the drives with Raid 10. Now I have a drive that is 3.63tb of space. I have the option of encrypting the system disk (1.75 raid 1 array) but my new drive does not have the option to setup bitlocker. It is a GPT disk with only one partition that windows shows as 3724.88gb free. Can anyone tell me how to turn on bitlocker? I also uninstalled a patch that "Fixed" an issue with bitlocker to go that some said would resolve this issue as well but it did not change anything.

Server 2012 Essentials - Reclaim space after file deletion in Storage Pool

Hey all,

This issue has been discussed many times here but I have not found a scenario or solution that helps me understand my problem.

I have a Storage Space 3x2TB Parity

When the drive filled to 90% capacity I moved all the files to another Storage Space.

The dashboard shows the drive as empty but with a low capacity warning.

Within Storage Spaces app all three  physical drives still show 88% precent used.

Will the system on its own ever recover the space?  If not, what do I have to do to recover the free space?

Thanks,

James

How to modify VSS retention ?

Hi,

I have a Windows 2012 Server with DFSR role and a lot of data on many partitions.

All VSS are configured on a dedicated partition Z: for all other partitions. For one partition (S: 2,5To) i configure 200Go for VSS and i always see less than 5Go used. When i check available shadows copies there are only 2 versions.

Why windows doesn't use all available disk space to keep more versions ?

Thanks.

ps : sorry for my spelling mistakes.

Backup dates gone?

Hi, Running Server 2008  R2 Backup

We had a drive corrupt and a few folders under are main Share were corrupted. So two days ago I went to our Windows server and restored from the prior days backup. After I restored I ran some updates and rebooted the server that night.  I then had reports that another folder in the Main Share had corrupted files.  I first went to the Drive where the Share was and tried to restore using Shadow Copies thru Previous Files but it now shows No Previous Files.  So I went to the backup, It now only shows available dates from June 2013.  I am now missing the last 6 months.  What happen??????   Is there a way to re-Catlog those dates?  I am in big trouble if we can't get these back!

Thanks,

Brian

Storage Spaces - Removing drive with "Lost Connection"

$

I have a storage space in server 2012 R2 (migrated from Win8) that is in an unhealthy state. It's a parity space on a pool that has two dedicated journal drives. The journal drives are no longer in our plane of existence and have been replaced in the pool with two new journal drives, however, I cannot remove the old journal drives as they are in a "Lost Connection" state.

Connect-VirtualDisk responds with "Failed." - no error code or other message. Same from the GUI.

Attempting to remove the offending disks from the pool, I get an error code that tells me they are still in use by the storage space. So I repair the storage space and the repair command completes, with no change (it still won't use the new journal drives). I've set the old drives to "retired", no change, I can't remove them from the pool as they are still in use by the storage space.

How can I convince the storage space to use the shiny new journal disks and let go of the old ones so I can remove them from the pool? The space hadn't been written to in months, so I don't believe there's a risk of data corruption. It doesn't really matter anyways, I'd gladly give up a few write operations to have the rest of the 6TB to be readable again.

Remove physical disks from pool - error "disks in use" - disks in "Lost Connection" state

Add new journal disks to the pool - no error

Repair storage space (to get it to use the new journal) - no error, doesn't do anything

Bring virtual disk (space) online - error - unhealthy state - won't use new journal disks

Any thoughts on getting the space to use the new disks or on letting the old ones go ?

Heya All,

I've been wreaking my brains over this for a couple of days now and just wondered if anyone knows the syntax to apply an e-mail address to a passive File Screen? Its just i've got about 2 dozen servers to set this up on and it'd be great if i could do it all with powershell :).

I've got setting up the passive rule all done but can't seem to find notes on the E-mail Address side of things.

NFS Client Mounts

Hi All,

I am having a problem mounting more than one NFS share to a windows 2008R2 server.

I can sucessfully mount one by using the following:

mount -o anon \\servername\share y:

but when  I try mount -o anon \\servername\share2  z: this fails with error Network Error - 53.

However, if I unmount the y: share (umount -a) I can then sucessfully mount the Z share

Best way to keep a folder in synch between multiple datacenters

I'm looking for a way to synchronize a folder from one server to another.
I want one server to be a master server and all the other servers should receive the file(changes) from the master server quickly after they have been edited or added/deleted.

I've been looking in to DFS, but I believe this requires setting up a domain.
I've tried this in the past but the domain also changed all my user account logins, which is something I want to avoid on a server which has already been setup.

Another thing is that the servers are located in different locations of the world, so the traffic go's over WAN.
All servers use Windows Server 2012 R2.

What would be a good solution/implementation for this scenario?

Allow read, write, modify but Deny delete for group- Share Folder!

Hello,

I have a share folder 'HR Share' on Server 2003 where I have a security group 'HR Users' from AD.  I need

HR Users - read, write, edit, modify, rename etc  but NO DELETE permission (This folder, sub folder or files none)

HR Manager - above all + delete permission (Full Control needed)

I already tried a lot from sharing permissions as well as Security>Advanced>Edit special permissions but confused.

If I deny delete for HR Users and allow everything else, they still CAN'T rename, save data in MS office file and it creates temp files too.

What's the apt workaround?

Stop execution of certain file types from network share.

To set the scene.

Server 2008 R2 Standard workgroup File Server.

Share holding multiple different media types. i.e. Company created videos (AVI, MP4 Etc) Audio recordings of Company meetings for reference (MP3).

so basically we have network saturation when employees are using such resources. we want to stop them from opening files server side and streaming over the 1Gb network and have them copy it to their local machine to open.

i had a light bulb moment where i thought adding a special permission to the files (not folder/sub folders) with deny traverse/execute would work. yep only if its a .exe

im at your mercy and thanks in advance.

Windows 7 Enterprise - Profile "Corruption" Issue

$

Background: We are a full Windows Shop with Server 2012 and 2008 R2 Domain / Virtual Servers (VMWare).  DFS namespace for Folder Redirection (via GPO) of "My Documents" (Not AppData/Profile Info), Shared Drives.  We use Endpoint Protection and do all of our Imaging via SCCM 2012, and are a full Windows 7 Enterprise desktop shop.

Problem: Over the past 4 months this problem has gone from once in a while to about 30-40 calls a day inconveniencing our users.  It is best explained on these forums, of which I have copied and pasted to save my fingers: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2251262

"One of the problems we have at my work is when a user logs on they get a red x on the network icon, but it isn't a network issue. When this happens the computer is almost unusable. You cant use things like windows explorer, or internet explorer. We know how to fix the issue, which is deleting the usrclass.dat file in the users profile. It has been suggested that SCCM could be causing the issue but i don't know. Has anybody else ran into this issue on a Windows 7 enterprise environment? I've tried googling the issue but some of the stuff is way over my head, and I dont know much about SCCM and if that is causing the issue."

Any input would be appreciated.

Notes: We originally thought it was our SCCM Image because the guy who did it did a sysprep style image, but we installed a couple of computers from the DVD and were able to make this problem happen.

We can resolve the issue by deleting the users profile, OR by deleting the UsrClass.dat file and letting it rebuild each login, however, we prefer to get to the root cause of the problem.

We've also applied the following patches to see if they would resolve the issue but it still occurs:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2775511/en-us

Thank you.

DFS read only and open files (write lock) on spokes

If I have a DFS folder setup to replicate in a hub and spoke topology where all the spokes are read-only (all servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 system), and a user opens any kind of files from one of the read-only spokes and mantain open those files for a long time connection (an application mantain that files open), will that file not be replicated from the hub to that spoke until the user closes them files?

DFS-R backlog building on "Hub" Server during intial sync

$

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently going through the process of "rebalancing" the storage in a DFSR Hub Server environment that I manage. This is due to increase of size for certain replication groups, and we shift several RG's around in order to ensure the drives on the DFSR Hub Servers do not run out of space.

As all Hub servers reside in the Same Data Center/LAN, no preseeding of data is done.

We use the following process:

  • Identify alternate DFSR Hub Server which has a drive/Volume with sufficient space;
  • Create a new member in the replication group
  • create connections between the current hub server and new hub server
  • create the appropriate folders on the new hub server and storage
  • update replication group
  • update staging location and size to seperate volume
  • dfsrdiag pollad on both hub servers
  • Replication starts

One thing that i recently noticed was that sometimes when we follow this process, when running a backlog report both ways (I.e. from the Source Hub Server ---> Destination Hub Server and vice versa), the Destination Hub Server starts to slowly build up a backlog, which is usually predominantly folders... (i.e Destinataion Hub Server ---> Source Hub Server is showing a backlog of folders/files to send back)

The reason i find this strange is that the replication to the destination hub server is clean (i.e. not preseeding is done, so I don't understand how it could start to generate a backlog report).

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Is this normal?

Thanks in Advance!

Symbolic Links Server 2008

In the middle of a hardware refresh. I am using a windows server 2008 R2 for an OS with hyper-v. I am creating DFS targets and I am unable to find files with symbolic links on the AIX resource machine. An example of the link is listed below. Is there some set up parameter I am missing. The goal is to use the linked file as a resource. I am currently doing via DFS on Windows server 2003, but that envinronment was set up before my time.

Strange Defrag error 0x80070057

$

Hello everyone,

I am observing a strange issue with defrag on Windows Server 2012 R2. There is a hardware RAID volume using deduplication in VDI mode and containing some virtual machines. Deduplication works okay, chkdsk shows no logical errors and RAID is consistent, but defrag reports error "0x80070057 The Parameter is Incorrect" after some minutes or even hours of runtime.

I've tried to search for such error but all I've found was about SSD that do not need defragmentation at all. I have also found an advice to set the CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo to "1" but I am a bit unsire if it is safe in my case.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's a sample output of defrag (sorry for Cyrillic localization):

Windows Server 2012 iscsi target differencing disks chain problem

I have following scenario in Windows Server 2012 iSCSI Target:
I'd like to use a chain of differencing disks in target. "Chain" means more than one level of differencing disks. I create the fixed parent disk:
New-IscsiVirtualDisk -Path d:\parent.vhd -Size 5GB
the result:

ClusterGroupName   :
ComputerName       : var
Description        :
DiskType           : Fixed
HostVolumeId       : {8A822BCE-7566-11E2-93EE-001E4FCF6E08}

Size               : 5368709120
SnapshotIds        :
Status             : NotConnected
VirtualDiskIndex   : 813676727

The I create first level child differencing disk:
New-IscsiVirtualDisk -ParentPath d:\parent.vhd -Path d:\child1.vhd
the result is:

ClusterGroupName   :
ComputerName       : var
Description        :
DiskType           : Differencing
HostVolumeId       : {8A822BCE-7566-11E2-93EE-001E4FCF6E08}

Size               : 5368709120
SnapshotIds        :
Status             : NotConnected
VirtualDiskIndex   : 1615492714

The I'd like to create 2nd level child differencing disk:
New-IscsiVirtualDisk -ParentPath d:\child1.vhd -Path d:\child2.vhd

This results the following error:

New-IscsiVirtualDisk : One or more parameters are not valid. For details about possible causes, type get-help New-IscsiVirtualDisk.

I'm  able to succesfully create 2nd level child disk using New-VHD cmdlet, but then I can't import resulting disk:

Import-IscsiVirtualDisk -Path D:\child2.vhd

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ImportIscsiVirtualDisk:System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException:80070032,Microsoft.Iscsi.Target.Commands.ImportIscsiVirtualDiskCommand

It seems that it isn't the 4K align problem:

Convert-IscsiVirtualDisk -DestinationPath d:\child2new.vhd -Path d:\child2.vhd
WARNING: No conversion is needed because the Source VHD is not a differencing VHD or it is already 4K aligned.

I can't find the way to make it or find clear information that it is impossible.

Balancing disk space usage and I/O across Storage Pool???

$

We have 16 2TB HDDs across 2 JBODs in a single Storage Pool (Windows 2012).  We then have a series of mirrored VirtualDisks defined.

We have noticed that performance is not what we expected.

We have noted that disk IO is not scaling across all of the HDDs, we are seeing only 4 HDDs being actively used.

In fact, the Storage Pool details show 4 of the HDDs to be full, 5 of the HDDs to have 160GB of free space and a single HDD with only 256MB used.

We are wondering what we can do to "rebalance" the space usage/IO?

Thanks to all for input/suggestions
