Network Share Access - Some folders show cross mark and grayed out

$

Hello,

One of our customer is running Win2008 R2 Standard Server on HyperV as File & Print Server.

There are common share folders on the server and there is a user who is complaining about the issue.

The user has Change Permission both on the Share Permissions & NTFS Permissions but sometimes when he access the netwok share he sees some folders showing cross mark and grayed out and some available.

I have checked there is no problem on the permissions of the user, once i removed the user permissions and again assigned the same it helped but again the problem returned.

Please suggest.

Regards,

Office 2010 & 2007 - Excel and Access File Locking Out On the Network With Multiple Users

$

This is also posted in the Office 2010 - IT Pro General Discussions, but was suggested to repost here, since a definitive answer was not found.

Hi,

An issue that's happening is that Excel and Access files are locking on the network. We're currently using Office 2007 and 2010.

Here are some different scenarios that are happening:

  1. When opening the file it is locked out by “User X” which is the person that has the file locked out and no one else can open the file.
  2. When opening the file it is locked out by “User Y” which is NOT the actual person, but is locked out by “User X” and no one else can access the file.
  3. When opening the file  it is locked out by “…another user” which is generic and no one else can access the file.

The two more common events are incident 1 and 2 with 3 happening the less common.

This message will continue until the sessions are closed through computer management on the file server.

The file server is running Windows Server 2003.
This does happen on both Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.
This does happen for users using Office 2007 and Office 2010.

There are two sets of Office 2010 Users when it comes to patches. Everyone has the most current patches with Office 2010 SP2 while anyone that has Microsoft Project 2010 is using all the current update before Office 2010 SP2.

All users that are using Office 2007 have all the current patches and service packs.

Another variable is that we have users that will leave a file open on the network for 3+ days and after a while it will lock the file out.

Also we have Shadow Copy that runs daily on the system which I'm not for sure if that impacts anything if a file is opening during that time.

Any ideas on how to mitigate the lock out issues would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Binary Process

Edit November 12, 2013: This issue can occur if and if not another person actually has the file open. If the person doesn't have the file open then there is a hung connection which needs to be disconnected by going to the Computer Management of the File server.

Firewall Ports required to connect from Standalone Server to Domain Server File Share

I have the following Scenario that I’d appreciate some help with.

We have s standalone server on the other side of a Hardware Firewall from our corporate domain. We need to configure access to a file share FROM  the standalone server TO a domain member server via  a domain user account.

I am not sure which Firewall Ports I need to open and how the authentication flow works in this situation.

Is the authentication request passed along by the target member server or will the standalone server need to communicate directly with domain controllers?

My list so far:

Nbname 137/TCP - UDP
nbdatagram 138/UDP
nbsession 139/TCP
TCP/UDP port 445

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Secure file storage and access over internet

I have a requirement where around 50 users wants to have their dedicated folder to save their content. They should have a secure access to the server and apart from them no one should be able to access the share ..kind of password access.. in case of their laptop get stolen or HDD compromised their data which they want to store in a central storage should not be compromised. I am not sure what is the best bet for this.. what technology to use. I guess i am looking something like Dropbox.. but a Microsoft solution.. but then their data should not get compromised at any cost. from client machines....

MARK AS USEFUL/ANSWER IF IT DID

DFSR Event ID: 4302 Replication Error

I keep on getting error on a folder that do not exist anymore on daily basis from running the dfs health report.  How do I resolve this?  Based on KB article, it only indicated that the file has been replicated on the event id but provided no solutions.  Windows Server 2008 R2.  I've checked all the replication servers for open files and is is not open nor does it exist.

Is there a solution to this besides clearning DFSR Event Logs or reboot the server based on blogs on technet?  Clearing logs and reboot server seems to be rather horrible as a solution!

Description: Due to ongoing sharing violations, DFS Replication cannot replicate files in the replicated folders listed above. This problem is affecting 1 files in 1 replicated folders. Event ID: 4302

Suggested action: Verify that the files you want to replicate are closed and have no open handles to them. For information about troubleshooting sharing violations, see The Microsoft Web Site.

Server 2012 Essentials - Reclaim space after file deletion in Storage Pool

$

Hey all,

This issue has been discussed many times here but I have not found a scenario or solution that helps me understand my problem.

I have a Storage Space 3x2TB Parity

When the drive filled to 90% capacity I moved all the files to another Storage Space.

The dashboard shows the drive as empty but with a low capacity warning.

Within Storage Spaces app all three  physical drives still show 88% precent used.

Will the system on its own ever recover the space?  If not, what do I have to do to recover the free space?

Thanks,

James

Enabling Disk Quota by OU in Windows 2012 R2

$

Hi,

I am currently migrating a file server from an old Windows 2003 machine to a new Windows 2012 R2 server. I am using Robocopy to migrate the files (including permissions) and going to merge the shares registry for a smooth transition (hopefully).

All my teachers and students' My documents are redirected via Group policy to this file server. Unfortunately, the previous administrator did not split the students and teachers server folder into a separate root folder.

My boss want me to implement a disk quota of 2Gb for each student. However, as all the students and teachers folders reside under one main folder, I cannot implement the File Services quota management (I think).

At least, all my student accounts reside in one OU and the teachers accounts reside in another OU.

Can I implement some sort of disk quota on the students by OU? Please bare in mind that the folders already contain data.

Kindly advise

Thanks a lot in advance

File server migration "System Error: 64, The specified network name is no longer available"

I am currently migrating from 2003 standard file server to 2008 R2 standard. I am using Windows file server migration toolkit 1.2 to move the shares. The first time I was attempting to move everything over I received alot of errors stating that there are file paths to long after the "validating settings" step. I am resolving those and I ran it again to get a up to date list of the file paths that exceed 260 characters. I got the list but also I got a few "System Error: 64, The specified network name is no longer available". Now I can explore to these locations and access the files/folders. I'm not sure why this is happening now and not before, but any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

2K8 DFSR Replication not working

$

We moved from 2003 servers to 2008 servers a few months ago, recently we noticed that replication between server1 & server2 is not working, as the initial copy from the primary to the secondary semed ok, but nothing has replicated since. When you run the health diagnostics in DFS it appears to indicate no issue and all is ok, but nothing is actually replicating from 1 to 2.

when i run dfsrsdiag backlog on either server says there's nothing in backlog. I have a feeling it might have never worked since the initail copy, but found another utility which shows me the below, what does this mean? replciation should be one way server1 to server2

UPDATE:

Dfsradmin Membership List /RGname:Rep_group_namef/attr:MemName,RFName,IsPrimary

Both servers show No to Primary, is this absolutely required? as other servsr with DFS shares have this option of no for all mebers but they are replicating OK

How to modify VSS retention ?

Hi,

I have a Windows 2012 Server with DFSR role and a lot of data on many partitions.

All VSS are configured on a dedicated partition Z: for all other partitions. For one partition (S: 2,5To) i configure 200Go for VSS and i always see less than 5Go used. When i check available shadows copies there are only 2 versions.

Why windows doesn't use all available disk space to keep more versions ?

Thanks.

ps : sorry for my spelling mistakes.

Need Script to Replace Group and Keed the same NTFS permissions.

We have a need to replace one AD Group with Another AD Group on our Filers.  I also need to have the same NTFS permissions retained at both the group and file level.  We would like to run this script on UNC or Mapped drives from a command line.  This script will be required to run on many NAS Filers from a Windows server.  Many Terabytes of data is involved.

Replace XXXXXXGGUsers with XXXXXXUSPersons.  NTFS permissions will vary depending of the Share, Folder, or File.  This need to remain the same.

Thank you,

Mike Larson

Cound not map network drive: Extended error has occurred

$

Hi everyone. I've got a 2 domain setup with a two-way trust set up, and have a user getting an error when trying to map a drive to a share on a server. The name of the server is \\rgm-server.domain.com (domain.com used for ease) and we have to use the FQDN because they are not part of the same forest. When the user maps a drive to the path \\rgm-server.domain.com\share, he gets the error "The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred: An extended error has occurred". If he then swaps out the FQDN for the machine's IP address \\10.0.1.51\share it works perfectly. When he does a net use command from thr command prompt, it gives an error 53. I have checked logs on his machine, and I see no entries relating to this. WHen he tries to just go straight to the server from the run command, \\rgm-server.domain.com, he gets the error "... is not accessible. YOu might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this server... The user name could not be found". But, again, if he uses the IP address, it works fine, and he can access everything on the server. I'm baffled.

-Time is perfectly synced within miliseconds, except that they are in the Central time zone, and we are in the Mountain time zone, so they are off by an hour.
-This is Windows 7 x64 client, and Windows server 2008 R2 SP1
-Computers are on different subnets (10.0.1.x and 10.0.2.x)
-Computers are connected through a firewall based persistent VPN. There are no restrictions on that connection.
-User can properly ping the server via the FQDN, and it resolves. User can also do a ping -a and get proper reverse DNS lookup. I can also do DNS lookups in both directions of his computer from the server.

It makes no sense that this would work fine with the IP address, but not with the FQDN. There are lots of threads about this all over the place, but I've found nothing that helps.

Anything else that I could check?

Windows 2008 R2 domain - how to allow anonymous access to 1 folder share?

$

Hi,

II'd like to know if there is any truly working solution for establishing an anonymously accessible file share on Windows 2008 R2 (SP1) server running Active Directory (domain controller) and File Services.

I've been crunching through all google hits on that issue and seems nobody has gotten it to work unless the Guest Account was enabled (not an option for production domain controllers).

So far I tried all this to no avail, server keeps prompting me for username/password when I try to access such share from non-domain Windows computer:

1) created a folder, e.g. ASHARE and shared it under the name ASHARE$ ($ so it stays hidden from public)

2) assigned both share and ntfs permissions allowing full access to EVERYONE, GUESTS and ANONYMOUS LOGON

3) edit Default Domain Controller GPO to make following changes (under Local Policies Security Options and User Rights Assignment):

-enabled policy "Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously" and put "ashare$" on the list

-enabled policy "Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users"

-disabled policy "Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares"

-changed policy "Access this computer from network" and added ANONYMOUS LOGON account to the list

-made sure the policy "Deny access to this computer from network" does NOT include any of: Everyone, Guests and Anonymous Logon accounts

-checked policy "Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts" and this is disabled by default, but it doesn't have impact on Domain Controllers anyways.

-checked policy "Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares" and it is currently disabled (and should be unless I am reading it backwards?)

what else left?

The server still keeps prompting me for password when I try accessing \\server\ashare$ from any non-domain computer/user account. why is that so, what am I missing here? it should be a simple thing! I just need public dropbox folder on this File Server...

Windows 7 Enterprise - Profile "Corruption" Issue

$

Background: We are a full Windows Shop with Server 2012 and 2008 R2 Domain / Virtual Servers (VMWare).  DFS namespace for Folder Redirection (via GPO) of "My Documents" (Not AppData/Profile Info), Shared Drives.  We use Endpoint Protection and do all of our Imaging via SCCM 2012, and are a full Windows 7 Enterprise desktop shop.

Problem: Over the past 4 months this problem has gone from once in a while to about 30-40 calls a day inconveniencing our users.  It is best explained on these forums, of which I have copied and pasted to save my fingers: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2251262

"One of the problems we have at my work is when a user logs on they get a red x on the network icon, but it isn't a network issue. When this happens the computer is almost unusable. You cant use things like windows explorer, or internet explorer. We know how to fix the issue, which is deleting the usrclass.dat file in the users profile. It has been suggested that SCCM could be causing the issue but i don't know. Has anybody else ran into this issue on a Windows 7 enterprise environment? I've tried googling the issue but some of the stuff is way over my head, and I dont know much about SCCM and if that is causing the issue."

Any input would be appreciated.

Notes: We originally thought it was our SCCM Image because the guy who did it did a sysprep style image, but we installed a couple of computers from the DVD and were able to make this problem happen.

We can resolve the issue by deleting the users profile, OR by deleting the UsrClass.dat file and letting it rebuild each login, however, we prefer to get to the root cause of the problem.

We've also applied the following patches to see if they would resolve the issue but it still occurs:

SID and iSCSI connect

$

We had an imaging system that consisted of an APP and SQL vm servers that stored dataon an iSCSI sotre device, tha tthe server connect too using an iSCSI connector. During an upgrade, we added an updated APPS and SQL server and pointed these two new servers to the same data volume (no application software loaded yet). On the day of the install, we loaded the application and configures the new SQL to see the data volume. Next day, we lost user rights, which we repaired, next day, data volume crashed and I lost some data files. One Tech says that the SIDs from the original and new systems crashed the user rights, then after repairs, damage the actual data files on the iSCSI volume. I also see article that SIDs only have such problems on workgroups but on a domain, the unique SID numbers allow for multiple device access. Any thoughts ?

Thanks for your Help The Zarrr
