Fileservice (smb) unresponsive - other service (TCP) available - smbclient event 30809

$

Problem: Connections to fileshares(smb) on windows 2012 r2 server are suddenly not possible. This server is also a AD DS server and also GPO`s can`t be retrieved by other clients (example w2008 r2 RDS servers).
Rebooting the server will solve it. No 3rd party software on the server.
Seems no relationship with IO intensity. Events are logged outside of the normal working hours and outside of the backup window.

EventId: 30809 - SMBclient is logged on the windows 2012 r2 server.

A request timed out because there was no response from the server.

Server name: \DOM001
Session ID:0x0
Tree ID:0x0
Message ID:0x0
Command: Negotiate
Guidance:
The server is responding over TCP but not over SMB. Ensure the Server service is running and responsive, and the disks do not have high per-IO latency, which makes the disks appear unresponsive to SMB. Also, ensure the server is responsive overall and not paused; for instance, make sure you can log on to it.

Mounting an NFS Filesystem - limitations

Currently we virtualize our Windows Servers using XenServer. We are aware Snapshots are available but really don't need that level of DR. We do however, like to take exports of a few select servers from time to time. For these servers, we typically have a C: (OS) and E: (Data) partition.

The E: partition contains a large amount of data. When we do an export, this is included in the export which means, the time to complete is dramatically longer and the storage required is also dramatically increased.

The ideal would be to connect to the storage natively in Windows which means, XenServer would only be exporting the C: (OS) content.

I must stress a limit we face, currently, the only type of storage we can get is over NFS (CIFS and ISCSI are not available).

We face a few limitations with NFS that we've seen :

1. Mount of filesystem is only available per user

2. Mount is disconnected after session is over

3. Once mounted and creating a test folder, we're unable to see "Sharing" or "Security" tabs.

We believe the following URL gives us a solution for #1 and #2 but I believe #3 is a showstopper and our only option would be to get CIFS or ISCSI (or abandon altogether).

http://support.zadarastorage.com/entries/23139498-How-to-access-NFS-shares-from-Windows-OS

If anyone has an answer for #3, it would be appreciated!

Linking DFS Namespaces with Skydrive

$

I did some brief searching online and found nothing matching. At the company I work for, more and more folks are moving to Dropbox, Google drive and so on to store their departmental content (moving away from local DFS namespaces we have setup).

There are benefits to this as, the content is available worldwide and there are installs for Windows and MAC OS's to make it convenient for users to access.

Of course, this means they've moved away from using the local DFS namespaces we have setup. The data is not protected and who knows what assurances we have for privacy and backups from Dropbox, etc.

Microsoft seems to be in a very unique position here. It would be AMAZING if we could use Skydrive to LINK to an existing DFS namespace. Taking security into account, ideally, it would appear as a subdirectory in the user's Skydrive. The folder would only work if we were VPN connected ideally (so would link to a private IP address).

Does anyone know if linking Skydrive to an enterprise DFS namespace is possible currently and what would be involved?

Thanks!

Ed G.

PS shows missing mirror pool disk healthy, is primordial so cannot attach virtual disk

I've come across various issues I have been able to work out, love server version storage spaces but haven't seen this yet.  Using Desktop hardware/2012 Standard Eval. as 12 disk Das

2 disk pool, 1tb greens, jmicron controller, 2 vhdx mirror thin ntfs 60gb & 200gb, holding my VMs.  All was well couple of months but now only 1 disk shows in storage pool GUI for this pool and no primordial listed. WD datalifeguard extended tests show healthy.

get-physicaldisk = all physical disks accounted for and healthy, operational status ok

get-storagepool = 1 disk  IsPrimordial  True, operational status ok

get-virtualdisk = Mirror  Detached  Unknown  Manual attach

I am not sure how to re-attach the primordial disk to make the pool whole again.  Why do PS and the GUI show different data?

I failed at using the connectdisk command due to ignorance I think.  Thanks for any advice you can give,  Dave

DFS Namespace losing link

$

Hi Gang,

I have an environment with a domain-based Namespace on two 2008 R2 servers.  The users are all on Apple computers running OS 10.8.5 or (only two) on 10.9.

Within the Namespace, I have 7 shared folders that are all on the same server and drive.  Several of the users have noted that one of the shares disappear from the folder list in their "Finder" and I have confirmed the fact.

So, the Namespace is \\ourcorp.com\admin, and in there are links to IMAGES, ADMIN, USERS, COUNTER, OBJECTS, UNIVERSE and COMMERCIAL

The users will often notice that the link to IMAGES has disappeared, and they will re-connect to the Namespace, re-establishing IMAGES in their list.

All of these shares except IMAGES are folders within the same existing share on this server; i.e.  \\server\oldshare\COMMERCIAL or \\server\oldshare\OBJECTS

The IMAGES folder is itself, an existing share (by that I mean it was a share before I built the DFS Namespace); i.e. \\server\Images.  That is the only difference I can see from the other shares, which were created by adding  a new Folder Target and browsing to the folder within \\server\oldshare.

Some users also complain that they get 'disconnected' from the Namespace (they call it a 'server' because of how it's displayed in the Apple Finder).  A problem arises when they open the Finder/Server Connections and click Connect on the Namespace a second time; i.e. smb://ourcorp.com/admin - they then have a mounted drive called admin-1 which has IMAGES in it and a mounted drive called admin which doesn't.

Might seem trivial, but a common operation they use is to right-click copy a link to the file for email to a coworker. So the recipient gets a link to a file which looks like //volumes/admin-1/objects/small/ones/anobject.png, when it should be //volumes/admin/objects/small/ones/anobject.png

When the recipient clicks on the link it's hit-or-miss whether or not they get an error.  If they have re-connected to the Namespace as the sender did, all is okay - because they have a mounted drive called admin-1. If they haven't, then they can't open the link and assume there's a problem with the system and open a service desk ticket.

Would someone here have an idea of where to look for the cause?

Your suggestions are appreciated!

Office 2010 & 2007 - Excel and Access File Locking Out On the Network With Multiple Users

$

This is also posted in the Office 2010 - IT Pro General Discussions, but was suggested to repost here, since a definitive answer was not found.

Hi,

An issue that's happening is that Excel and Access files are locking on the network. We're currently using Office 2007 and 2010.

Here are some different scenarios that are happening:

  1. When opening the file it is locked out by “User X” which is the person that has the file locked out and no one else can open the file.
  2. When opening the file it is locked out by “User Y” which is NOT the actual person, but is locked out by “User X” and no one else can access the file.
  3. When opening the file  it is locked out by “…another user” which is generic and no one else can access the file.

The two more common events are incident 1 and 2 with 3 happening the less common.

This message will continue until the sessions are closed through computer management on the file server.

The file server is running Windows Server 2003.
This does happen on both Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.
This does happen for users using Office 2007 and Office 2010.

There are two sets of Office 2010 Users when it comes to patches. Everyone has the most current patches with Office 2010 SP2 while anyone that has Microsoft Project 2010 is using all the current update before Office 2010 SP2.

All users that are using Office 2007 have all the current patches and service packs.

Another variable is that we have users that will leave a file open on the network for 3+ days and after a while it will lock the file out.

Also we have Shadow Copy that runs daily on the system which I'm not for sure if that impacts anything if a file is opening during that time.

Any ideas on how to mitigate the lock out issues would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Binary Process

Edit November 12, 2013: This issue can occur if and if not another person actually has the file open. If the person doesn't have the file open then there is a hung connection which needs to be disconnected by going to the Computer Management of the File server.

Storage Tiering not automatically tiering

$

Hello

We have setup a Server 2012 R2 Server with a storage space consisting of a Hard Drive and an SSD. We have setup storage tiering (When you open the Virtual Disk it says that Storage tiers are enabled and that there is capacity under SSD).

When we run the powershell command "Get-FileStorageTier" no files are listed. If we manually pin a file to the SSD  storage tier and run get-filestoragetier it then shows the file we pinned.

Should files that are automatically tiered show up when running get-filestoragetier? Is there any way to interrogate what files are currently on what tier?

Windows 2012 R2 Storage spaces - even number of disks with mirror?

$

Hi,

I'm just testing Windows 2012 R2 storage spaces on a lab with an MSA70 containing 25 SAS disks.

So I created a storage pool with the 25 disks, then tried to create a mirrored virtual disks and it failed telling me that I did not have the appropriate number of disks.
I removed one of the physical disk from the storage pool (now down to 24), and was then able to create a two-way mirror virtual disk!

I thought that the two-way mirror functionality in Storage Spaces would be writing block randomly on two disks, and not specifically "link" two physical disks together in a mirror.

Is that not the case? why do I need a even number of disks when creating a two-way mirror?

Thank you,
Stephane

Shares unavailable due to some unapparent reason.

$

We had a strange issue today, which i cant explain. Maybe some of you could point me to possible cause.

Application where failing because multiple file share was unavailable.

First let me explain the setup.

We have corporate forest, which exists out of four domains. These domains contain various servers. Every production site, has its own production forest, which is separated from the corporate LAN by a Firewall. Yesterday two Biztalk server lost their connections to a share on a server within the production site. This means that both server A1 and A2 in corporate, could no longer connect to shares in the various production sites at the same time while writing a file.

In our troubleshooting we tried to access the share via the command-line which failed. We tried to access that share from a third server, which worked. So the target share was available from A3, but not from A1 and A2. Other shares on other servers within the same production network were available for server A1 and A2, yet other shares on the target were not available to A1 and A2. While A3 can access all shares.

We checked the eventvwr on A1 and 2, but could not find a smoking gun. Rebooted A1 and A2, still no success. We rebooted the target server in one production site, which solved the problem for that site. So in the end we fixed it by rebooting the Share server in every effected production site (4).

Yet as this was production that was effected, we have to explain what happened and what we can do to prevent this issue from occurring again.

Antivirus:

antivirus cant be because 1 target server did not have anti virus installed.

SMB signing:

SMB signing is not enabled by default in file shares, and is not enabled by policy.

Accounts:

The security accounts used to access the share in production sites where not locked-out. And we were able to access the shares from server A3 with those credentials.

A net use time out with "network error 64". Checking dumps on the firewalls did not show anything being blocked.

Active directory domain services stopped after removing routing and remote access role

Hello everyone;;

I am in deep trouble.. I did install routing and remote access and then  lost connection to the server remotely. Then I connected a monitor to the server and removed the role... then it asked me to restart the server . After logging back in I found all my active directory service has gone... I can see red cross on active directory domain services.. Also I am able to ping other pcs but other pcs cannot ping my server..

However when I go into the active directory services, it shows all services are running except file replication service. I have tried to start that service but it give error 1053 error..

My server in  between loses LAN connection... I dont know what is going on.. Please help!!!

My  server is win 2008 R2 ser pack 1

Only one DC....

Has fixed ip,

no DNS server running..

Best way to keep a folder in synch between multiple datacenters

I'm looking for a way to synchronize a folder from one server to another.
I want one server to be a master server and all the other servers should receive the file(changes) from the master server quickly after they have been edited or added/deleted.

I've been looking in to DFS, but I believe this requires setting up a domain.
I've tried this in the past but the domain also changed all my user account logins, which is something I want to avoid on a server which has already been setup.

Another thing is that the servers are located in different locations of the world, so the traffic go's over WAN.
All servers use Windows Server 2012 R2.

What would be a good solution/implementation for this scenario?

Unable to connect to File Server using UNC path

Hello Guys,

I have a file server running windows server 2008 r2 and it is also a DC. I am able to RDP/Ping and resolve the name for that server from any other machine on the network but am not able to access shared folders using UNC path files\sharedfolder or even by IP address 10.0.0.1 and it is returning "windows cannot access 10.0.0.1 check the spelling......". But from the server I am able to see all shared folders by localhost

- Firewall is turned off.

- Antivirus is disabled.

- able to resolve DNS.

- able to RDP to the server.

Please advise. Thanks

In a mess over DFS

$

Hi,

I've gotten myself into a bit of a mess. Successfully installed Server 2012r2 on Friday. Raised Forest Functional Level to 2003 so it could become a DC. Spent Friday / Saturday replicating files over to it (I'm aware that DFS on a DC is not ideal. However this is my situation.)

I noticed today that after deleting and recreating namespaces and replication groups that one or two wouldn't go away. Replaced with the red cross. I have 5 namespaces / repl groups. Tried to make some mods to one and made the mistake of googling and trying various fixes, from checking DCDIAG etc and DFSRDIAG POLLAD and more. Culminating in following instructions to manually remove the corrupt entries using ADSI Edit.

4 of the groups are fine, I didn't have to mess with them. But one that I did delete re-appeared on the new server. It shows as Error on the other 3 servers. When I run DFSDIAG /TESTDCS and DFSDIAG /TestDFSIntegrity they come back fine.

At this stage I think I've messed about far too much so I'll just modify login scripts to point the users of the non-functional namespace / repl group to standard shares on one server just to ensure they have access to data and not end up in the further bad situation of people writing to multiple versions of shares.

Is there any way back from this apart from creating a new namespace / repl group and renaming file shares and replicating out again from scratch? Any way to make the new server push out it's, seemingly, still intact namespace / repl group out to the other servers overwriting the errors?

What a mess...

Lose network share preriodically

share access to a data server periodically stops. This access is  through a mapped drive only outside the site but in the same network.  If you go to a site computer, and access the shared drive, it is accessible.  Other shared servers ( same site) are accessible from outside the site.  Other symptom is you cannot remote desktop into the data server.  Reboot of the server brings back outside shared access and remote desktop usage.

Any one have any suggestions

Folder Redirection - Secure Root/Parent Folder

$

Hello,

I want to redirect Users folders to a Fileserver, and also prevent them from browsing the root folder share.

\\Domain\Share$\HR\UserName

According to MS, users only needs (List Folder/Read Data, Create Folders/Append Data) permissions on (HR), But without the (Read Attributes) permission, they can't access the redirected folders (Documents, Music, Pictures ...) through Libraries or their User Folder (Folders icons appear white, nameless and unclickable), even though they have full access on their parent folder (UserName), however, they can access it directly by typing the full UNC.

If I give them (Read Attributes) permission, they can browse and create folders in the root share (HR) easily.

any suggestions?

I'm running Windows 2008 server enterprise r2 and I got hit by a nasty virus that modified a bunch of my services and its dependencies.  Since then I'm having a problem getting the workstation service to start.  When I try to start it, it reports:

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

I confirmed c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe & wkssvc.dll exist and have the proper dates (they match another 2008 install I have).

For DependOnService I have:

Browser, MRxSmb10, MRxSmb20, NSI

Any suggestions?
