Methods to Migrate File Server from MacOS to SMB

$

Hey everyone,

First time submitting a question, so please excuse (and advise) if I've done this incorrectly.

I currently have an Apple File Server (~600Gb) which I'm in the process of migrating over to a 2k8R2 server.  I wanted to find out if anyone else has done this process, and if they have any tips on best methods to do this.  I'm trying to find out if there is a program which can truncate the names to make them NTFS compatible as well as removing the permissions on the files so they can be transferred successfully. At this point I'm manually moving files folder by folder and troubleshooting as problems arise but there has to be an easier way to do this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks everyone!

Best,

Dan

stop adding domain admins to folder security by default

$

Hi All

I would like to remove this default behavior. I have two local domain admins with access to file server. They always login to server as them. When they are changing any permissions on shared folders, the server 2008 R2 automatically adds them to security list.

For example, all mu shared folders have this default permissions:

1. Everyone -> Disallow delete this folder only

2. System ->Full

3. Domain Admins ->full

3. Local administrators- >full

4. Folder security group -> modify

if Admin1 changes any permissions on this folder, servers adds him to the above list with full permissions. I want to eliminated that. So if they change anything, server would NOT add them to the list by default.

Please advise.

Thank you

Can browse subfolders, but cannot map

We have a very strange issue that started last week while I was out of the office. We had a switch go down, and after replacing we are unable to map home directories to subfolders. I can map to the root folder, and browse into the subfolder, but attempting to map with net use or AD brings up System Error 67 and/or 53, network path not found.

Names and IPs resolve fine.

We have MS support working on this, but after working for 2 days I do not have high hopes with them and am reaching out in hopes someone out here can assist.

File Server Migration Wizard - Single 2008 storage server to 2008 storage server enterprise cluster

I'm trying to migrate from a single file server to a cluster (around 400 shares). old server is 2008 Storage Server. New cluster is 2008 Storage Server enterprise. I can't robocopy the data and use a registry export/import to recreate the shares as the cluster registry entry for shares are held differently in the registry.

I'm now looking to use Microsoft File Server Migration Wizard, but am having difficulty. It worked form a test server to the cluster using test shares, but if i try and copy from my live file server to the cluster, i get an error.

The setup and validation work fine. When it gets to the copy stage, it gets half ay through copying files, then throws up a fatal error:

"A Fatal Error has occured please contact Microsoft... Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Stack Trace: at FSMigration.RobocopyWrapper.ParseOutputLine(String line, RobocopyOutput Tag& tag, String&filename, UInt64& filesize)..."

Has anyone seen this before?

Any ideas where to start to fix it?

Many Thanks.

Database software unable to see Data directories Held on SBS 2011 server

Hi Guys,

We have a customer that is using FoxPro which is a very old piece of software, it is not being able to see various different files/directories that are held on the server. The directories that have issues are more than 8 characters long or have spaces which is really weird.

However if the files with issues are moved to a Windows XP/Windows 7 machine. FoxPro can browse to the files over the network with no problems.

I understand that FoxPro is an antique and not supported, but any ideas or pointers you can give me (if any) to get this working correctly would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Where can I find information about Windows Search Service in Server 2012 R2?

Hi.

Where can I find more information about the Windows Search Service in Server 2012 R2?

I'm evaluating how well Server 2012 R2 would fit as a file server for a customer and even though the Windows Search Service most likely isn't powerful enough for their needs I have to be able to point to some sort of official documentation in order to back this claim up.

I probably missed it on Technet but it's not very easy to search for Windows Search Service either. :)

Thanks.

Storing/Using Machine images

Hello

I remember several years ago, I could load a "diskette" into my workstation; it would prompt for which image I wanted to load on the current workstation.  Then it would find its way to the server, grab the image in re-image the workstation with that image. As a corporate instructor, I had 24 systems that needed to be re-imaged several times a week.  This would work great.  Now I need to store images for different systems on our network and be able to do the same thing.  Select which image I need and have it be found on the network and re-image the system using that image.

Does this still exist?

Thanks

Terry

Drop file for students

I need to create a file for students to drop their files in.  I have set the permissions on the share for full control and the user on the security tab to write to this file only.  The users error is Access Denied.  So I give them read permissions and change to this folder and file and the user error is "can't modify in this network location.   I need the students to drop the file only and have no other access to go in and see other files or modify files.   Can you help with this?

How to bring unallocated disk space together after deleting the partitions they contained?

Hello Community

On a hard disk Windows 2008R2 Server is installed.

The disk was previously used  by on a workstation so it had different
partitiions on it.

I don’t want the other partitions I just want  c:\ and d:\ partitions to be on the disk.

I deleted the partitions  and they now are just unallocated spaces with only
a c:\ drive remaining.

The problem is that the physical composition of the drive from (left to right) in computer management is that there is unallocated space (on left side) totaling  100GB,next (in the middle)  there is the c:\ partition which has 300gb and finally on the right there is another 100GB of unallocated space.

As you can see the  c:\ partition is in the middle of 2 unallocated spaces.

When "dos" was popular you could use delpart.exe and/or fdkdisk.exe but I don’t know where to find it, and if I did find it I don't know if it works on 64bit technology.

Also NT4.0 used to ask you if you wanted to delete partitions before it installed on a new partition or a different partition (including asking what type of O/S NTS you wanted installed before installing) it has been said that the 2008R2 installation can also asks if you want to delete partitions but when I put the installation disk in it immediately start installing so I stop it, because I already have a clean install I just want get rid of all of those unallocated partitions and create a c:\  and  d:\  partition.

So the question is,   how can I put the 2 unallocated spaces together contiguously and maybe assign the drive letters c:\ and  d:\ to it so that the drive  will only have a c:\  partition and a d:\ partition?

By the way, there is also a folder named “Recover” on the drive because the drive use to be installed on a workstation. that I deleted the files of so that I could use the disk but will not allow me to delete the "folder itself" that the contained the contents, so how do you delete that folder?

    Thank you

Can't map drive to server 2008 R2 from offsite

$

Hi there,

I've been struggling with a problem with our server, which runs Win Server 2008 R2 (V 6.1 Build 7601, SP1). Our people can map a drive to the server (\\servername) from their computers just fine when connected to our office network. Up until recently we were able to map a drive to our server from offsite using a DNS pointed address, servername.company.coop - and it stopped working. (yes, I really mean mapping, not 'Network location' - thought that doesn't work either. We want to be able to access the files on the server from our computers offsite as though it were a peripheral hard drive.)

I've checked with our ISP, and the DNS pointers are correct. When we try to logon, we receive "Error code: 0x80070043, The network name cannot be found". We are usually able to use Remote Desktop to access the folders, but it's clunky and lately some offsite computers are no longer able to get in that way. We have 6 network folder shares on this machine, and I don't seem to be able to share any more when I try to create a test folder; is there a limit to how many shares may be active at one time? I apologize if this is too vague, I don't have much experience with mapping and don't really know where to start tracking this down.

Thank you for any help you can give!

Skip ACL Propagation

Hi there,

I'm trying to applying a top level, non-inherited ("This folder only") ACL to a directory containing a massive number of subdirs/files. Since the ACL I want to add isn't going to be inherited, I feel like there should be a way to do this without trawling all subdirs, but using the ACL GUI or icacls still does this, despite the only change being the addition of the one ACL (i.e. I've not changed other ACLs). I started a run over the weekend, but it was interrupted, so I've started another, but isn't there a way to apply an ACL without autopropagation that doesn't involve winapi?

Thanks

DFSR backlog not reducing in windows 2012

$

I had this issue previously with Windows 2008 R2, and the issue was resolved by KB2663685 and KB2831101.

I've done an inplace update of windows 2008R2 in my file server - DFSR server, and after the update, I get again this problem:

My biggest folder stopped replication after an unexpected shutdown, and backlog count doesn't decrease . It's now more than 1.119.000

I've 5 replicated folder in the same drive unit, for about 2 TB of data. But the small ones replicate without problems

Any suggestion?

Error message "A file name cannot contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? " | # { } % ~ &", - invalid filename error, but no invalid characters

Hi,

As the title says: Error message "A file name cannot contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? " < > | # { } % ~ &", - invalid filename error, but no invalid characters.

This is a problem who suddenly appeared for one user in a large network. He has a Windows 7 client [x86] and the error messages comes when he tried to change name on a shared folder [Windows 2008r2 server]. This is a sporadic problem, suddenly he is allowed to change the file name.

Link to a similair problem:

Anyone got a solution for this problem?
