Windows 2008 connected via UNC Session to a isilon

$

Hello,

following "Problem".

Isilon is a NAS System which provied NAS Space via SMB or NFS. In our solution the Windows Server 2008 connect the Fileshare via UNC Path witch works good.

The Isilon also provides the possiblity to distribute all incoming connections via a Round Robin DNS Service directly on the the Isilon across all front end NICs.

The problem now is when we connect to the ISILON with UNS the Server makes a DNS Lookup for the right IP-Adresse. But when the Server starts another session via UNC to the same "target" but to a other file while the first session is also opened the Server don´t  make a new DNS query. The TTL of the first DNS lookup was 0 so there is nothing in the DNS Cache. So what is the Problem? Where is the UNC Information stored on the Server. I need the possiblity that the Server starts a dns query for all UNC Sessions.

Can anybody help?

Windows 2008 R2 - ..\winsxs disk space issue

I'm having the known issue with ..\winsxs causing the system partition to become full.

Several months ago I did the follow fix to apply service pack 1 and this did free up some disk space.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2795190

I now have the same disk space issue with ..\winsxs and the KB2795190 fix didn't clean up any disk space. I received "Service Pack Cleanup can't proceed: No service pack backup files were found."

I also found the link below saying the bug has been resolved with Windows 7. I installed desktop experience and attempted to patch cleanmgr.exe, but wasn't able to find a compatible patch for Windows 2008 R2. I did attempt to apply the Windows 7 patch (KB2852386), but received "The update is not applicable to your computer". Is there a patch for Windows 2008 R2 SP1?

Server 2008 R2 Server cannot UNC to IP Address OR Hostname but it can ping

$

I have a server that is running Server 2008 R2 that is causing me a lot of problems.
I can UNC to the server from another server fine. But I cannot UNC from the problematic server to other servers.
I have checked the services and compared them to other servers that are not problematic to verify no important services have been disabled. I have check ip address / default gateway / dns settings and they are all correct.
This server is on the same subnet as the other servers. There are no firewalls or firewall rules on any of the servers.
I can ping from the problematic server to the other servers fine. I just cannot UNC to them. I have tried hostname and IP address and neither successfully UNC's to the server properly.

This server is a Hyper-V server so it hosts other machines and has a virtual network adaptor configured. What is strange about this is I look at the IPV4 properties of the virtual network adaptor and it contains static address information but when I look at the connection details it shows an APIPA address. No matter what I try I cannot get the APIPA address to release / renew or show the static addressing information defined in the NIC properties. Maybe this is normal for Hyper-V I'm not sure.

Any help is appreciated.

Persistent Windows 2008 Mirror Errors : Reactivate required every time I log into server

Greetings,

I have a software-mirrored volume on a Win2k8r2 server.

The status every time I log in says ERRORS. After right clicking the drive and clicking Reactivate, the ERRORS goes away, but only to come back in a short time. Short as in Reactivate > CHKDSK > Errors back.

What is going on here? It has been like this for quite some time, and the tools for mirroring seem very elementary. Are there better diagnostics to see what's going on? Is my data still mirrored? There is no RESYNCHING step to anything, it just goes from ERRORS to ONLINE in a flash.

Thanks!

Hi

Can you force a max folder name length in server 2008 r2?

users continually make folders with stupidly long names. Education didn't help, i now need to make it impossible for them to make long folder names.

"\folder for documents and other paperwork not found elsewhere"

God help us

thanks for any tips

experience slow file server performance

Hi all,

currently we are expecting some strange problems with our fileserver. It is a Windows Server 2012 server with newest hardware. After one to two weeks uptime, Windows 7 clients cannot load their explorer window. It takes a huge time while the green bar in the address bar is trying to load the explorer overview and finally stops with a blank explorer window.

The shares can still be accessed through UNC commands and the fileserver can be reached with a ping command. This error doesn't occur when opening the explorer window on another server.

On the fileserver I can see a lot of open files called "\msftewds".

I have found an article of microsoft describing this problem but there was no final solution for me:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822219/en-us

The only workaround for the moment is to restart the server (what is not that easy because it's productive). After a restart the "\msftewds" files are gone in the open files overview.

Appreciate any help. :)

Best regards

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

$

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

Solutions - Seeking input for web front end to storage

I am being bound by business process and privacy issues, and we want to keep our storage in house.

At the same time, all our users see and love drop box and google drive.  So how can we, in our own private cloud, setup a web front end to our exisitng storage.  Is there some MS product that will already do this?  Points to consider, will it integrate with DFS?  SSL? Still be able to map drives directly from in office locations.  Encryption (far back seat) options would be awesome.  An MS product would be prefered, but are there other solutions??

Am I over thinking this?  can I just setup a web server, and maybe code something in house?

DFS link Folder icons not displayed on DFS network Folder.

$

Hi all:

I am migrating from windows server standard 2003 R2 to windows server standard 2012 R2.

I have created an alone DFS system on 2012 like 2003.

To increase the user recognition for network folders, long time ago, in 2003 I set up an Icon for every network folder, this way, when the users access to DFS they show the folder Icon, it is more easy to identify folder with icons.

Example:

Local folder on DFS 2003 server:

User view, when they access to DFS from the network:

this structure is perfect, this way, users can identify folder by image not only by name.

I used to follow this steps:

1º- set up folder icon on the local server selecting an icon from a shared folder where all users can access (this way the user will access to the icon that folder has it configured)

2º go to the local server folder where is the DFS root structure is saved (in my case c:\dfs and them set up the same icon for the link that  is in the local folder.

I know that this folder is read only, and will never display the icon, but after a lot of expriences If I don't do this step user can not show the icon selected when they access to DFS over the network.

So all of this is working perfect in windows 2003 R2 with SP2 and all updated untill today.

but with windows server 2012 R2 and all updates this does´t work.

I have used robocopy to create the new structure on the new server so the configuration is the same.

New server local folder:

but users never show the icon of the folder when they acess to new 2012 DFS over the network.:

We have been using this feature lot of years, working perfect but now I can not do it with W2k12, and I dont know where to find any help to solve the issue.

I know that it is related with windows server 2012 because on DFS in 2003 some of the links are changed/linked to the shared folder of W2k12 but continue showing the icon, so the issue is related with DFS in windows server 2012.

please can some knows know to procee?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Search by date, exclude by folder name

We have a client that was recently affected by the CryptoLocker malware. We are restoring folder by folder rather than a blanket restore since some files that were not affected may be overwritten by older backups if they were created in that window between last backup and infection. Is there a way in Windows Server 2008 R2 to search for folders and files by date but exclude specific folder name? Example: we've already marked several folders as foldername.infected so we know which folders to restore. I'd like to exclude those folders from my search by searching for all folders modified on a specific date but not include the folders that include the word "infected."

Without any scripting is there a way to do this?

Thanks.

Best solution for data availability for end users --- reverse redirected folder and roaming profile

$

Roaming profiles and redirected folders do not seem to work for our environment. They often become troublesome and cause much help desk time and resources.

Is there a way to have a roaming profile and redirected folder configuration however have the local workstation have the primary copy and have the "server side" version be a backup?

This would seem to allow the user to have a constantly updated local copy and also have a backed up version on the enterprise server side available.

Removing files with long names.

Hello:

I've managed a few windows file servers over the past few years ranging from (server 200 to 2012 R2). Some of the groups in the organization that I work for have a fairly complicated categorization system for their data. Sometimes the path to a file is nested in folders with really long file names, sometimes the directory names are fairly small but the are quite a few levels of directories before you get to the target files. I've come across problems where a user is not able to delete or rename a file because the path plus the file name exceeds the 256 character limit. Normally I will either rename the long folder names to something shorter or map a drive to the parent folder to shorten the path and this has worked well in the past.

Recently however, I have come across a problem where the file name itself is actually over 256 characters long. In these cases I haven't really been able to do much since there is no way to shorten the path. One thing that I have tried which has worked only part of the time is to open the dos command prompt and use the dos short name instead delete the file. Like I said, this works well but mainly just when I am dealing with one single file. Sometimes I have directories full of these files so using this approach is not efficient.

I had read an article a while back on how windows uses internal path prefix to be able to reference drivers stored in the system even if the path to the driver files exceed the 256 character limit. It looks like the way to do that is to refer to the file using the following notation: \\?\c:\path\to\long\file\name.txt . And it is not supposed to have a limit. It does not work at the command line and when I tried that using explorer it changes the path to the regular path without the '\\?\'.

I have a particular file server that has TBs of these types of files that I need to delete. However, I haven't found a way to do it. I've read online about free applications that claim to do this (ie. unlocker) but I was hoping to be able to use a native OS feature to take care of this issue. I'm fairly confused as to how these files were able to be created in the first place when just the file name itself exceeds the maximum character limit? Is there a way that I can prevent this from happening? is there anything in server 2012 R2 that addresses this problem?

Thanks,

RA

Tier Storage with SAS drives

Is it possible to have hot storage on HDD?

I have a HP disk storage shelf with 25 900GB 6G SAS 10K rpm in a raid 10 configuration. This provides about 10TB of file storage data for users home directory and shared directories which is almost full. A lot of the files are old rarely access files, but are still required for reference. I don't want to purchase any more high quality storage and would like purchase  slower higher capacity drives like a HP D2600 w/12 4TB 6G SAS 7.2K.

So my question is can these different disk shelves be used in a tier storage arrangement.

Thanks in advance.

Deduplication and DFSR

$

Hi,

I have a couple of storage areas which use DFSR to provide resilience between two file servers. I would like to increase the available space by using deduplication in Windows 2012 R2. I have a concern that if the unduplicated data size is greater than the actual disk size I won't be able to reinstate a server if all the data has to resynchronised  from scratch. Has any one had this problem or found a way round it?

Thanks in advance

IOmeter doesn't see Storage Spaces vdisks

I've created vdisks (Storage Spaces- one simple and one parity) in Server 2012R2 and they show up in Server Manager, but IOmeter (2006.07.27) doesn't show them-  only the physical disks show up.  However, if I create a volume (and file  system) on the vdisk, then it shows up in IOmeter- but I've never had to do that before, and I've used IOmeter quite a bit.  Is there something that needs to be done?  Thanks.

WS2012 Server for NFS issues

$

I've been using a NFS share on my WS2012 box to server up media to my Plex server and Boxee box. When it works, it generally works well, but I've found that any time the server is rebooted, the NFS share gets totally screwed up. They'll usually appear to be there, but the Linux machine that Plex is running on cannot mount the share. Any attempts to modify or remove the share will result in one of several error messages - Can't delete share from registry, can't update share, etc - but after trying to remove the share then getting the 'can't delete share from registry' message, it (sometimes) goes away - same thing with modifying - it'll say it can't modify it and try again, but if I go back into properties, the changes that it supposedly couldn't make are there. Other times I'll get locked loop where I can't remove the share because it can't delete the share from the registry, I can't change it because it can't update the registry (along with try to modify it again), etc.

So far, I've had to redo the entire thing at least three times and there doesn't seem to be a pattern as to what actually works. The idea of a NFS server on Windows is a great one - however, 'Server for NFS' on Windows 2012 seems to be a flaming pile of junk - Does anyone have any suggestions for making it ACTUALLY WORK - and not require hours of screwing around to get it working again every time the server is rebooted? This isn't rocket science - It should not be any more complex to set up than SMB shares on the server side, and it I shouldn't be getting error after error when just trying to make, change or remove the share. I'm not sure that it's related, and I can't imagine that it is, but I do not have any user mapping agents installed - All I want NFS for is to grant R/O access - I don't care if that's to EVERYONE - I don't need to get granular with this NFS share. I should be able to narrow it down to IP address using the NFS share permissions, and even if I can't, it's not like any machine outside my LAN will have access to the NFS share...

Robocopy not copying ACLs

Take following directory:

D:\Directory\Sub\

D: has explicit permissions and are passed to sub directories.

D:\Directory\ has inherited and explicit permissions.

D:\Directory\Sub\ only has inherited permissions.

I'm using robocopy to make an exact copy D:\Directory\ on a new drive, including ACLs and ACEs, with the following syntax:

robocopy "D:\Directory" "G:\Directory" /e /sec /log:logfile

But not a ACL is copied over. I end up with plain "User" and "Administrators" ACLs on the new directory.

This is being done on a file server, and I'm using a domain administrator to perform the action in an elevated command prompt.

It might be worth mentioning that the storage is a SAN (IBM V7000). The D drive is a raw device, the new drive a plain VMDK.

Share Folder Access Problem

Hi,

We are facing the issue with NAS storage access. We have a NAS storage which have got some shared folders. Users access the folders from their PC's. We are facing the issue that when we try to access the share with IP\\192.168.1.1 it gives error that the "attached device is not functioning" but when we try to access as\\servername it works fine.

I have taken netmon trace while accessing the drive as IP and as Hostname and some of the highlights are as follows:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When accessing through IP

1. Client -> Server: SMB: C Negotiate, Dialect = PC NETWORK PROGRAM 1.0, LANMAN1.0, Windows for Workgroups 3.1a, LM1.2X002, LANMAN2.1, NT LM 0.12, SMB 2.002, SMB 2.???

2. Server -> Client: SMB: R negotiate, NT LM 0.12 # = 5

3. Client -> Server: SMB: C session setup & X, NTLM NEGOTIATE MESSAGE

4. Server -> Client: SMB: R session setup & X, NTLM Challenge message error code 22 Status More processing required

5. Client -> Server: SMB: C session setup & X, NTLM Authenticate Message Version:V2 Domain:domain, user:username,workstation:PC1

6. Server -> Client: SMB: R session setup & X NT Status: System Error Code 563 Status DOMAIN Controller NOT FOUND

After that it again goes back to point 3 and continues like that

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Access through Hostname

1. Client -> Server: SMB: C Negotiate, Dialect = PC NETWORK PROGRAM 1.0, LANMAN1.0, Windows for Workgroups 3.1a, LM1.2X002, LANMAN2.1, NT LM 0.12, SMB 2.002, SMB 2.???

2. Server -> Client: SMB: R negotiate, NT LM 0.12 # = 5

3. Client -> Server: SMB: C session setup & X,Krb5ApReq(0x100)

4. Server -> Client: SMB: C session setup & X,Krb5ApReq(0x200)

5. Client -> Server: Tree Connect Andx Path: \\hostname

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The domain Controller which is there in that site is Windows 2008 R2.
