Local drive displays space incorrectly on server 2012?

$

I have a machine running server 2012 Standard. I have it set up with 2 partitions:

Drive C: (50 GB)

Drive E: (50 GB)

Drive E: is the one in question.  When I view the properties for this drive it tells me that I only have about 8.94 GB of free space remaining.  However, when I open the drive and view all files and directories I am only seeing about 10.6 GB of space are used. I have the folder set to show all hidden and system files.  I only use this drive for file storage.

Anyone know why it would tell me that there are only 8.94 GB free?

I have several other virtual machines running the same OS without this issue.

Unable to encrypt files in shared folders on Windows 2008 R2 server

I setup folder redirection to a Windows 2008 R2 server.  The folders are redirected properly, and the users have appropriate share and security permissions to the folders.  However, they receive the below message when they try to encrypt files or folders in their shared folders via EFS:

"An error occurred applying attributes to the file:

(filepath)

The requested operation cannot be completed. The computer must be trusted for delegation and the current user account must be configured to allow delegation."

If I connect to the server via Remote Desktop Connection, I can encrypt files/folders via EFS.  However, I cannot encrypt files/folders on the shares if accessing the shares via mapped drive.

Windows Server 2003 log files for crashes and shutdowns

Hi All,

I have a 2003 32 bit server and it had a shutdown yesterday.  First thing I noticed is that teamviewer connection is not opening ( and it was 10 minutes before ), and then when I connected remotely server was fresh after restart.

I have checked Event Viewer and there is nothing there that could tell me why did it restart.

Is there any way of checking why it shutdown without having to restart it again? Is there any log files that can tell me what happened?

Thanks in advance

Widows Search not working with Data Deduplication?

Hi,

I noticed that many files were missing when searching for them on my Server 2012 Fileserver.

After some troubleshooting I noticed that the ones missing, had a Size on Disk of 4KB and the "SparseFile" and "ReparsePoint" (PL) Flags set.

So it looks like they were processed by the enabled Data Deduplication.

Am I missing something here or is it really the case that deduplicated files cannot be indexed by windows search?

Server 2008 R2 Server cannot UNC to IP Address OR Hostname but it can ping

I have a server that is running Server 2008 R2 that is causing me a lot of problems.
I can UNC to the server from another server fine. But I cannot UNC from the problematic server to other servers.
I have checked the services and compared them to other servers that are not problematic to verify no important services have been disabled. I have check ip address / default gateway / dns settings and they are all correct.
This server is on the same subnet as the other servers. There are no firewalls or firewall rules on any of the servers.
I can ping from the problematic server to the other servers fine. I just cannot UNC to them. I have tried hostname and IP address and neither successfully UNC's to the server properly.

This server is a Hyper-V server so it hosts other machines and has a virtual network adaptor configured. What is strange about this is I look at the IPV4 properties of the virtual network adaptor and it contains static address information but when I look at the connection details it shows an APIPA address. No matter what I try I cannot get the APIPA address to release / renew or show the static addressing information defined in the NIC properties. Maybe this is normal for Hyper-V I'm not sure.

Any help is appreciated.

Server 2008 R2 unable to access local DFS Namespaces \\localserver\share

$

Our primary DFS server is unable to access DFS shares on itself.  \\localserver\share.  All clients (Windows 7) and all other servers can access the namespaces on\\localserver\share and the affected server can access namespaces on all other DFS servers\\server2\share even ones it replicates with.

This is an issue because we have software on this server that rely's on accessing the namespace via the UNC path\\localserver\share

It was working up until a couple of days ago and we believe it stopped after applying the latest round of Microsoft patches to the server although this has not been verified as the cause.

As well, yesterday the server BSOD'd in the afternoon.

Finally, we are unable to access \\localserver\C$ from any client or server.

What is the affect of restarting the DFS Namespace Service? (Will users be affected if it is restarted on all DFS servers?)

SFTP in Windows 2008 R2

Is SFTP included in Windows 2008 R2? (without using 3rd party applications). Not the FTPS either. My web searches so far didn't give positive answer.

Thanks in advance for your inputs

Changing Boot Partition via Windows

Hello,

I am have a back-up server running Windows Server 2008 R2. This server has 8 partitions, 7 that are exactly the same than the others servers and one that will look for the servers and if one of them are down, it should change the boot partition to the one corresponding to the server down, and reboot on that partition, so it can take place of the lacking server.

I am trying to do this using a VBS Script, using the Diskpart application, for example:

Diskpart > list disk > select disk n > select partition m > active

And then reboot the computer.

Will this work? Will it change to boot the system I need?

Another problem is that I am new to this language, does anyone have any suggestion? The checking if the server is online part is alredy done, I am strugling in calling diskpart and making it accepts those commands.

Thanks!

Junction point only resolves to GUID

I started getting some replication errors in DFS, which led me to a replicated folder containing a junction point. When I run "dir /al" on the directory, it shows the junction point, but instead of a target name it just shows D:\System Volume Information\DFSR\Private\<GUID>. Am I right in assuming this means the target location is no longer valid? When I try to open the folder/junction, I just get an error. It's possible I don't have access to the target location though.

DFS server removal

Hello,

I have a domain controller that I would like to decomission and remove.  It is also one of three namespace servers.  How can I remove it as a namespace server?  It actually isn't sharing any files in the namspace on the server.

Thanks,

FSRM 2008 R2 reporting inaccurate quota usage amounts

$

I've got a Win2008r2 Enterprise server with FSRM 2008R2 installed.  I switched someone's quota from soft to hard when they reached 472% of their quota, to try to curb their appetite for disk space!  They cleaned things up significantly, and came well under their usage limit.  They then tried to save something and they can't.  I have disabled and re-enabled their quota, I've ensured there are no nested quotas, but it still shows the % Used as 472%.  I've emptied their directory completely and refreshed the FSRM view and still no luck.

I'm unable to determine the correct version of FSRM.  Does anyone know how to tell if I'm running Update2 or not, or if there are any updates to it at all that are available?  I am at my wits end trying to get this thing to refresh!

Thanks,
Joe

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

experience slow file server performance

Hi all,

currently we are expecting some strange problems with our fileserver. It is a Windows Server 2012 server with newest hardware. After one to two weeks uptime, Windows 7 clients cannot load their explorer window. It takes a huge time while the green bar in the address bar is trying to load the explorer overview and finally stops with a blank explorer window.

The shares can still be accessed through UNC commands and the fileserver can be reached with a ping command. This error doesn't occur when opening the explorer window on another server.

On the fileserver I can see a lot of open files called "\msftewds".

I have found an article of microsoft describing this problem but there was no final solution for me:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822219/en-us

The only workaround for the moment is to restart the server (what is not that easy because it's productive). After a restart the "\msftewds" files are gone in the open files overview.

Appreciate any help. :)

Best regards

Best solution for data availability for end users --- reverse redirected folder and roaming profile

$

Roaming profiles and redirected folders do not seem to work for our environment. They often become troublesome and cause much help desk time and resources.

Is there a way to have a roaming profile and redirected folder configuration however have the local workstation have the primary copy and have the "server side" version be a backup?

This would seem to allow the user to have a constantly updated local copy and also have a backed up version on the enterprise server side available.

Q1: Sometimes we deleted a folder or a file on a deduped volume. The Free space is not released. How to do a refresh to show the correct result?

A1: The following cmdlet could help to perform a refresh (Figure 1):

Update-DedupStatus

Figure 1: Force a refresh

Q2: How to remove a file on a volume from Deduplication list after the whole volume is already deduped?

A2: Run the following cmdlet:

Expand-DedupFile –path: “X:\folder\file”.

Note: It does not support wildcards in the -Path parameter (Figure 2).

Figure 2: Error when use wildcards

We can do standard PowerShell pipelining to automate for multiple files such as:

dir X:\folder | expand-dedupfile

Here is an example:

Intermittent file share problems. "Unable to create folder" System cannot find the specified

Hello,

This error keeps popping up on users desktops. It's extremely Intermittent.

Users try and create a new folder on a network share and they're unable. they can drag a new folder from their desktop in no problem.

If they close the explorer window and reexplore to the location they often find a new folder created even though the error below popped up.
Sever details 2008 R2.
Users running win7 x64

Just to confirm, this is not a permission based problem.

EDIT: Sorry my account doesn't allow pictures?

The error shown is-

Unable to create the folder "new folder"
The system cannot find the file specified.

Removing files with long names.

Hello:

I've managed a few windows file servers over the past few years ranging from (server 200 to 2012 R2). Some of the groups in the organization that I work for have a fairly complicated categorization system for their data. Sometimes the path to a file is nested in folders with really long file names, sometimes the directory names are fairly small but the are quite a few levels of directories before you get to the target files. I've come across problems where a user is not able to delete or rename a file because the path plus the file name exceeds the 256 character limit. Normally I will either rename the long folder names to something shorter or map a drive to the parent folder to shorten the path and this has worked well in the past.

Recently however, I have come across a problem where the file name itself is actually over 256 characters long. In these cases I haven't really been able to do much since there is no way to shorten the path. One thing that I have tried which has worked only part of the time is to open the dos command prompt and use the dos short name instead delete the file. Like I said, this works well but mainly just when I am dealing with one single file. Sometimes I have directories full of these files so using this approach is not efficient.

I had read an article a while back on how windows uses internal path prefix to be able to reference drivers stored in the system even if the path to the driver files exceed the 256 character limit. It looks like the way to do that is to refer to the file using the following notation: \\?\c:\path\to\long\file\name.txt . And it is not supposed to have a limit. It does not work at the command line and when I tried that using explorer it changes the path to the regular path without the '\\?\'.

I have a particular file server that has TBs of these types of files that I need to delete. However, I haven't found a way to do it. I've read online about free applications that claim to do this (ie. unlocker) but I was hoping to be able to use a native OS feature to take care of this issue. I'm fairly confused as to how these files were able to be created in the first place when just the file name itself exceeds the maximum character limit? Is there a way that I can prevent this from happening? is there anything in server 2012 R2 that addresses this problem?

Thanks,

[Forum FAQ] DFS Clients Referred to Off-Site DFS Server

$

In this article, we introduce two symptoms about the issue “DFS clients referred to off-site DFS server” and provide the solution to the issue.

Symptom One

You configure a domain-based Distributed File System (DFS) namespace. The namespace contains several namespace servers. When DFS clients access the namespace, they are referred to Off-Site DFS namespace targets.

Reproduce Steps

There are two Active Directory Sites, a DFS client and a DFS server named v-mayevm2 are in the same site. Another DFS server named v-mayevm3 are in the other site.

1. From the DFS client, access domain-based DFS Link target or folder target:

\\mandy.com\ns2\target1

2. Run DFSUTIL /PKTINFO and note that the client access off-site DFS server v-mayevm3 link targets / folder targets, refer to figure 1.

dfs5

Figure 1: Client access off-site DFS server

Troubleshoot

1. Right-click the namespace \\mandy.com\ns2, and then clickProperties. Check "referrals" tab to see if it is modified from “Lowest cost” (Figure 2).

dfs3

Figure 2: Check Referrals

2. Check“Override Referral Ordering” in DFS Namespace server Properties to see if "First among all targets" is selected. If so, uncheck “Override Referral Ordering” (Figure 3).

dfs2

Figure 3: Check Override referral ordering

3. IPv6 can cause the DFSN referral process to fail or be inaccurate, open the DNS Manager MMC snap-in and scan all the host (A) records for your domain's forward lookup zone. If you see any that report an IPv6 address and they are namespace servers or folder targets, you must validate your site configuration for IPv6 compatibility.

Symptom Two

You configure a domain-based Distributed File System (DFS) namespace and DFS replication is enabled for target folders. When DFS clients access the namespace, they are referred to Off-Site DFS server targets.

Reproduce Steps

There are two Active Directory Sites, a DFS client and a DFS server named v-mayevm2 are in the same site. Another DFS server named v-mayevm3 are in the other site.

1. From the DFS client, access domain-based DFS Link target or folder target:\\mandy.com\ns1\target1

2. Run DFSUTIL /PKTINFO and note that the client access off-site DFS server v-mayevm3 link targets / folder targets, refer to figure 4.

dfs4

Figure 4: Client access off-site DFS server

Troubleshoot

1. Right-click the namespace \\mandy.com\ns2, and then click Properties. Check "referrals" tab to see if it is modified from “Lowest cost” (Figure 5).

dfs3

Figure 5: Check Referrals

2. Check “Override Referral Ordering” in Folder Target Properties to see if it is selected "First among all targets". If so, uncheck “Override Referral Ordering” (Figure 6).

dfs6

Figure 6: Check Override Referral Ordering

3. As mentioned above, check if IPv6 cause the DFSN referral process to fail or be inaccurate.

Solution

1. The preferred method is to place a check mark next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP /IPv6)" on the IP Properties of the Adapter and reboot the server.

2. Configure Static IPv6 addresses on your DFS server and then define IPv6 Subnet/Site associations in Active Directory Sites and Services.

3. For those who have some aversion to having any IPv6 traffic hitting the wire there is a “supported” [not recommended by the Microsoft Product Group] way to disable outbound IPv6 using the DisabledComponents registry value as directed in KB929852.

Scan to folder issue. Folder not updating fast enough

$

Hi,

We have windows server 2008 R2 envoirment for our customers but we are having an issue. One of our customers makes scans with a printer to a network mapping. But for some reason something it takes a while for the scan (pdf) to show up on in the folder.

Now you can do 2 things.

Wait for the file to show up or edit a text file in the folder to 'refresh' it. Because after you do this the file shows up. Does anybody have any idea what is causing this?

We tried this fix: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b50d1400-252e-4a6e-b3a9-5276cf9093c7/files-delay-in-showing-in-network-share but no luck.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.
