DFS - multiple folder targets not working correctly

$

Hello,

I have tried creating at least 2 dozen DFS namespaces, none which have worked as needed.  Here is an overview:

On my "DFS Server", I create a domain based namespace.  No problems during creation.  We will call this "namespace".

I add a new folder to the namespace, and assign it two (2) folder targets.  I don't get any errors and things "look" good.  Both targets are shared properly and have the correct permissions.  We will call these "target1" and "target2".

So, the naming convention is:  DOMAIN.AD.MD\namespace - which SHOULD contain "target1" and "target2".

On the DFS server itself, I run the \\DOMAIN.AD.MD\namespace and it displays only "target1"

On my workstation (which is part of the domain/AD) I run the \\DOMAIN.AD.MD\namespace and it only displays "target2"

As mentioned earlier, both "shares/targets" have the exact same permissions, which are correct.  I've even taken off all permissions on the targets with the same results.

I've tried both standalone and domain based namespaces, both with the same problem.

See these screenshots for any clarification:

On the DFS "server" itself:

On my workstation:

I've seen many similar posts, which none seem to give an answer or a fix of any sort (unless I overlooked it).

Any help or guidance anyone can give is appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

Add domain controller from subdomain to as DFS Namespace Server.

Is it possible to add a domain controller from another domain to the same namespace? I have a forest with subdomains. I wanted to replicate the DFS Tree to a DC closer to users just to reduce the number of hops.   I don't want to have to add a server from our root domain to the site.

If I can't add the DC to the existing namespace can I create the same namespace in a subdomain?

When I try all I get is an error completely devoid of information.

File corruption - possible recovery or repair?

Good morning

We currently have a situation where a user is reporting office files in a folder on a server shared drive are coming up with an error when trying to open them. The error message is as follows:

"Excel cannot open the file -filename- because the file format or extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

The problem here is that these files have not been used in quite some time (early 2013), as a result the corruption has gone un-noticed to the point that the furthest back backup of the files we have still has them as corrupt.

I have tried several suggested methods of trying to open these files up, these are as follows:

-Try using a third party repair tool to fix the corruption within the files

-Use the windows explorer 'open and repair' feature and try to open the files

-Open the corrupt files up using open source (openoffice, Libre office .etc) office software

-Use a file converter to try switching the format of the file (in this case .XLSX to .XLS)

So far none of these above methods have worked. Is there any hope of getting these files back?

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

SharePoint Foundation 2010 - StoreMan.aspx page not reporting proper metrics

The configuration of my farm:

Sharepoint 2010 Foundation - up to date on all service packs.

SharePoint Offers an Application Page (_layouts/storman.aspx) which enables the user to view the Size usage of files throughout a Site collection.

Currently this page is only referred from within the Site settings. Only those with owner rights can get to the link.  We are planning to set  up the link on an "Admin Dashboard page" so all users can see and use the information to delete versions or uneeded documents. It's very handy for this type of reporting.

The problem is that the numbers shown in the .aspx page do not properly reflect the values shown in the libraries. I'm sure the timer job that runs this report is looking at all versions throughout the portal (even in the recycle bin). This is where I see the innacuracy I'm experiencing.  Is there a way to get Storageman.aspx to only run on the files in libraries and ignore the recycle bin? Does anyone have any ideas of how to give users more accurate data on file sizes? Our storage is locally hosted and we adhere to a strict data usage policy, yet I'm finding it difficult to enforce without the ability to show users where the "problem children" live.

NFSv4.0 client for Windows servers?

$

Does anyone know if there is an NFSv4.0 client that I can install on my Windows servers (2008 and 2012) to access a file system that supports the NFSv4.0 protocol?

I tried the native Windows "Client for NFS" but it appears to be using NFSv3 (client uses v3 MOUNT commands). I also tried a client from UMichigan, but it only supports v4.1 (separate protocol).

Would really appreciate your help!

Folder redirection issue

We recently implemented folder redirection at the County and it has worked very smoothly with a minimum of problems. However, we have one individual that has an issue I haven't been able to work through.

Each time the user logs on, it's as if it's the first time they've logged in using folder redirection.  They are an officer, so they have a lot of pictures and reports, so their files are in the neighborhood of 14gb.  From login to desktop takes over an hour each time.  The files are on the server.  I've had them log in on another computer, but it doesn't recognize their files.

Their computer is Windows 8.1.  We have many other 8.1's that work fine.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Failed Hard Drive, Mirrored Virtual Disk Not Repairing

$

I am running Server 2012 R2 with Storage Spaces. I have a Storage Pool with 4 drives and 1 virtual disk with all drives in the mirror configuration.

One of the drives recently failed hard and was causing the system to bluescreen. After finding and removing the drive I noticed the Virtual Disk was detached. I tried attaching it with an error. I had a spare drive in the computer that was not in the storage pool so I added it to the storage pool and retied the old failed drive and tried to run a repair all to no luck. For some reason it is not adding the new drive (PhysicalDisk4) to the virtual disk.

I will admit this is my first dealing with a failed drive in Storage Spaces and I'm afraid of loosing data, any help on how to correct the situation would be greatly appreciated.

I've attached pictures of what is happening in Storage Spaces for further info.

ReFS Benefits when used inside a Virtual Machine

This is our scenario.  We have a Virtual Machine running on ESXi5.5/6.  There is a VMDK virtual disk presented to this VM that is used for a file server data disk.  The volume is formatted with the ReFS file system.  Storage spaces is not being used.

In this scenario does ReFS automatically detect any corruption to the file system?

DFS replication over 70M files - doable?

from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773238%28v=ws.10%29.aspx#BKMK_00

What are the supported limits of DFS Replication?

The following list provides a set of scalability guidelines that have been tested by Microsoft on Windows Server 2012 R2:

  • Size of all replicated files on a server: 100 terabytes.
  • Number of replicated files on a volume: 70 million.
  • Maximum file size: 250 gigabytes.

We have 150 Million files but size is around 15TB. Anyone used DFS in WIN2012R2 in production? Was it working OK?

DFS-R folder resources Failed in Failover Cluster on Server 2008 R2

    $
    0
    0

Maybe a week ago, 7 of our DFS-R Folder failover cluster resources lost their configuration data. In the resource list, they just show up as "()".

I've seen suggestions online that disabling the replicated folder will remove it from the Failover Cluster, and then re-enabling it will automatically add it back to the cluster. So, I've disabled it via the Connections tab, and that does nothing. The other option is to disable it under the Memberships tab...but that has consequences, and I would rather not do that if it isn't necessary.

I'm also now seeing event ID 5012's popping up in the DFS Replication logs every hour or so.

The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner etc etc. The partner did not recognize the connection or thereplication group configuration.

Error: 9026 (The connection is invalid)

Now, "dfsrdiag pollad /verbose" or "dfsrdiag pollad /mem:<dc name>" both come back as successful. And a DFS Diagnostic Report brings back nothing apparently relevant to this issue, other than one error concerning the same event ID 5012's.

Also, I've verified that it's not a DNS issue, pinging the home office DFS server from the site server resolves correctly, and vice versa. And the windows firewall is disabled on both servers. It's POSSIBLE that there is a network issue. Replication works fine between the site server and the 2nd cluster server service, just not between the site server and the 1st cluster server service. However, via netstat I see active connections between the site server and the cluster server, as well as the active cluster host (although, just a single connection to the clustered DFS server, but ~6 to the cluster host itself).

So, I'm completely at a loss here. Any recommendations?

Can anyone help me?Creating the shadow copies in the file server cluster ,there are some errors occured, OS version is WSS 2012

    $

    0

I construct a failover cluster(file server,AP module) for sharing files by WSS 2012,and I want to use the shadow copies to backup my data, but when making  a shadow copies on the volume which  is added to the cluster(not the CSV,just add it to the cluster and use it to share files,it plays the role of file server),there are some errors occured, these errors result in the shadow copies failed, error likes the following pictures:

1: the disk F is added to the cluster, first I make the shadow copies by click the right key of mouse on the disk F,and chouse the configeration shadow copies, and click the settings, then click the schedule , and I wait just a few seconds, the error is appeared, like this picture 1, the wait operation timed out,and then ,picture 1

I click the schedule button once again,a different error occured, like the following picture," the object already exists",if i don't set the schedule at first ,use the default shedule, and click the enable button also the same  error must  accure

but the only diffrence is that, a shadow copy time point is created, also ,you can make the shadow copies by click " create now", that is creating the shadow copies manually. Although it can succesfully make the shadow copies, but when I select a time point to revert, error  occured, "A volume that contains operating system files or resides on a cluster shared disk cannot be reverted"

In a word, all the errors above make the shadow copies by schedulling failed, except making the shadow copies manually, but what makes me confused is that I have ever maked the shadow copies succesfully by schedul a policy,I don't know what makes it succesful, it's small probability, most of time ,it's failed. No matter what kind of situation, revert must be failed.

I'm sorry for my pool english , it's the first time for me getting help in forum by english ,I don't know if I descripe my question clearly, also ,other method like the linkhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784118(v=ws.10).aspx I have tried, but the same errors occured. Can anyone tell me How can I make the shadow copies in File Server cluster(AP module)? And I make a mistake in operating? Looking forward for your reply. Thanks!

Create DFS namespace fails on Member Server - Protected Users

    Hello,

we are in the process of implementing a more secure administration model.

One key feature we want to use is the protected users group.

Issue: create Namespace fails when using DFS GUI

If we use DFSutil or PowerShell everything works as expected.

However, when using the DFS Management GUI it does not work when working on a member server.

Error Message is: The namespace cannot be queried. access denied

In the event logs you can see a NTLM logon event that gets denied because the user is a member of the protected users group.

It does work when creating the Namespace on a domain controller.

Consequently if you remove the user form this group everything works as expected on the member server.

So the question is: how to enable kerberos authentication for the DFS management GUI

Forest and Domain level Windows 2012R2, all severs Windows 2012R2

Anyone has some experience regarding this issue?

Hi, I am planning on setting up DFSR on a lot of branch sites. the plan is to replciate them to the main server in the data centre and backup this serve every night. The data we plan to migrate on the branch servers are home drives etc. What are best practices for doing this? Would I use a read only option on this as I wouldn't want someone to change the data in the data centre and then this replicate back down to the branch server!

    Thanks

DFS-r Seeming to Select Incorrect Primary Member

    $

    Hello,

So I'm having a strange issue here.  I'm trying to set up a replication group between two sites (Denver and LA) with little success.  I've tried setting up a test replication group between these two members with a directory structure that is very simple.  Shared folder is called Test, RG is called DFSTest.  When I set the primary member as the correct server (Denver) within the test group, the files replicate to LA as they should and new files that are added/deleted are syncing as expected.

The reason for setting this up is to get a large volume of files, approximately 1.5tb over 13m files to LA from Denver.  We've done this in reverse recently, I set up the RG to replicate from LA to Denver so that we could rebuild and the LA box, which was completed.  The LA box is currently Win2k8 R2, and the hope is to replicate the dataset back from Denver so we can upgrade that box as well (Currently Win2k3).  Both of these boxes were in a namespace serving content, so now Denver is doing all of that while LA sits out of commission with no data on it.

The issue is here: When I set up the replication group, I select Denver as the primary member, as the content we're trying to replicate sits on that box.  Whenever I do this, it seems that LA is taking the role, deleting some files on the Denver server (which is in production, so this can't happen) so every time I do this, I replace the deleted files and try again.  The folder structure never gets created on the LA box as it should, and the replicated folder remains empty.  I've tried several times without any progress.

Could anyone offer any insight on what's going on here?

    Thanks!

ISCSI Initiator reports "Disk -1" ?

    Hello,

i have a netgear NAS that acts as ISCSI Target for my Windows Server. The NAS has 2 NICs, which are configured with independent IP-Adresses: 192.168.100.2 and 192.168.101.2

My Server provides a counterpart for each NIC available: 192.168.100.1 and 192.168.101.1

The NAS should hosts 4 drives, which are setup as 4 LUNs and wrapped into 2 target-groups. The idea was to increase performance by connecting to both groups with an independent NIC. This worked perfectly fine when testing it with one disk per target-group.

I tested this with one drive per group and testing was fine: about 198 MB/s throughput on a Simple-Disk with 2 Columns.

Now, I added one more disk and I am facing the problem, that the ISCSI-Initiator reports "Disk -1" for the two old disks.

Also the Disk-Management shows "2 Disks Missing":

However, Storage Pools are NOT reporting any problems with the ISCSI Disks (19&17, 18 not yet pooled):

so, is it "healty" now or not? May it be possible that Storage Spaces isn't able to catch missing ISCSI Disks and sends all the data to the disks without recognizing that no data is actually written???

Or is this just the "result" of pooled disks no longer appearing in Disk-Management? (So, The Initiator cannot find it, thus reporting "Disk -1" which in turn will make the Disk-Management think there is a missing disk?)

    best,

DFS V2 setting ABE with Powershell

    $

    Hello everybody

we currently have a stand-alone DFS running on W2K8R2 without replication. Inside our central namespace the access based enumeration is enabled. In former times we create a dfs-share with dfscmd.exe for and used dfsutil.exe for setting the abe. This works very fine.

Now I tried this with powershell:

new-dfsnfolder creates the share as expected.

grant-dfsnaccess seems to works without an error.

But the share itself still has "use inheritance permissions from local filesystem" instead of "set explicit permissions on the dfs Folder" and is viewable for everybody. Switching inside the gui to "explicit permission" shows the permissions given with grant-dfsnaccess.

Has anybody an idea how to switch this Setting?

    Best regards from Germany   Guido
