Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Shared Folder error "Action can't be completed because folder or a file in it is open in another program"

$

We're receiving this error on one of our shared folders on a local server. Changing names to a file or folder is fine, however, as soon as we open a file (and then close it) we receive the error above when attempting to change file and folder names. The particular folder in question is one with a very large amount of files/folders, which only a very select few have access. So the likelihood that the conflict is due to two individuals working in the same file/folder is impossible.  We've also replicated this issue on multiple systems, which leads us to believe the issue is on the server side.

Does anyone have advice for resolving this?

When trying to check the Volumes, Disks, Storage pool, or iSCSI Virtual Disk using Server Manager nothing appears except an error.

When trying to check the Volumes, Disks, Storage pool, or iSCSI Virtual Disk using Server Manager on our NAS we receive various errors depending upon which of the list we are trying to check.  The errors all have phrasing indicating there was an error during enumeration of ....

When using Powershell and running the Get commands for the items, We get back the information without any problems.  We also don't have issues accessing the drives.   The problem is getting Server Manager to show it.

Anyone know why server manager won't display this information?

If I format this volume to NTFS everything works fine. Had no such problem in Server 2012 R2.

Guess defrag.exe is not working with new ReFS v3.1

Storage Spaces overhead

Hi, I'm testing storage spaces and ReFS on a VM and I'm not sure I've got it right...

The VM has the boot drive (80 GB) and four vhdx (10 GB each) connected.

1) I created the storage pool selecting all 4 10 GB disks (allocation: automatic) and ended up with a pool of 37 GB capacity / 36 GB free

2) I created a virtual disk with parity, fixed, maximum size (from the gui) and ended up with a 22 GB disk and 2,50 GB of free space in the pool (what? why??)

I'm wasting 8 GB on 30... a little too much I think. Did I do something wrong? Could someone explain why so much overhead?

Thanks

DFSR database engine stops. DFSR dies. Can I start the DB somehow?

$

On one of two servers in a replication group, there was ESENT event 103: "... The database engine stopped the instance (0)."

Seems like DFSR is completely dead on that server. It doesn't report events in Event Viewer, doesn't write to logs, I cannot restart the DFSR service, etc. This has been the case for 48 hours now. It has not happened before. (I think this happened due to a backup issue.)

Is there a way to start the engine? Or how else should one address this?

iSCSI Target Server not working properly

Hello everyone,

Me and a fellow internship student are working on a test enviroment for our project at the internship company. We made 3 hardware server with Windows Server 2012 R2, the 1st and 2nd as Hyper-V servers and the third for the datastorage. We are going to cluster the first two virtually after configuring the network connection for the vm's but we are stuck at the datastorage part. The iSCSI target server is not running due to some errors and so we cannot launch our virtual machines on the 1st and 2nd server. I made a event log of one of the most troubling errors below. Could anyone help us out? :)

DFS Namespace Slow UNC Fast

$

I will try to be as detailed as possible here so sorry for the long post.  I have a MS case open but it is taking a while to work through this with them so hopefully someone here has experience.

I have DFS Namespaces setup and we are having some odd issues.  All the posts I have seen that are similar to this are old so I thought I was ask.  When I open office files using DFS Namespace paths, saving the files is very slow.  I am guessing the issue exists for non office files but it is easier to test with Office.  I see progress bars for saving.  For many users this is taking a lot of time.  If I open that same exact share and file using the UNC path (\\servername\sharename\) the file saves very fast.  No delay whatsoever.   This issue appears to be limited to Windows 7 workstations.  We only have a handful of Windows 10 workstations otherwise all others are 7.  One oddity is that I have a Root namespace called \\mydomain.com\IT.  I have several folders setup in there.  If I access files on one of those DFS folders it is slow.  If I access files on one of the other folders it is fine.  Both DFS folders point to an IT share but different sub-folders on the same exact file server.  The entire share has the same permissions pushed to those 2 folders.  Very Odd...

Here is my environment.
4 Domain Controllers All 2012 R2.
1 of the domain controllers is in our DR data center.
The network between production & DR is flat.  Same IP structure so we have no sites and services setup.
We are planning to remedy this in the coming weeks.

File servers are 2012 R2.  Running DFSN, DFSR & Deduplication.
File servers are DFS Replicated to matching pairs in our DR site.
DFSR occurs at the drive level not the share level and is functioning properly.

Namespace Roots are pointed to all 4 domain controllers as Namespace Servers.
We have Namespaces setup with Everyone Read & Admins Full Controll at the root.
Namespaces are setup with Access Based Enumeration.
Namespace folders are setup to allow only the groups which are granted share and NTFS permissions.
Local shares are also setup with Access Based Enumeration and appropriate groups for permissions.
Access based enumeration appears to be working properly.
Namespace folders have 2 targets.  The first is the file server in production and has the referral set to First Among All Targets.  The second is set to the file server in DR and has a referral set to Last Among All Targets.

Anyone have any ideas for me to try.  I have been searching for an answer all week.  I have seen a few posts and have tired a few things but nothing has worked.  MS had me apply some patches last night but that did nothing..

Icon on Local PC for Single Application on Server

Hi

I am trilling the new Windows Server 2016 on a Virtual Server on the AWS site.
My goal is to allow my users to run my desktop application on a server so I don’t have to rewrite my whole application in a web based language.

I am trying to create an icon on the users (local) computer to only run my single application.  I have created 3 users and they can log on and the program but that’s a 2 step process.

Any help or links to help would be most welcome.

Many Thanks
Phillip

HOW TO CLEAN System Volume Information\Dedup SERVER 2012 r2

hi!

I had a FAILURE OF THE SERVICE DFSr. after that  I lost all the information on the volume-all share. I did not pay attention to the folder - System Volume Information. After  restoring DFSR and start copying data on volume I discovered that the data does not fit on the volume because folder System Volume Information is too big.

At first i recreate database - System Volume Information\DFSR and delete all old data manually.

At second i discovered folder System Volume Information\Dedup.  Deduplication rate for this volume with new data is 0.

I disable Deduplication and try to delete Volume Information\Dedup. I have full permissions on folder. but get error. So how can i delete this folder? Can i enable deduplication on this volume and it will work correctly?

Storage Spaces vs RAID - Am I missing something?

Hi Guys,

I've been tasked with comparing Storage Spaces on Windows Server 2016 vs hardware RAID.

For this test my hardware is:

  • 2x 12-Core 2.4GHz CPUs
  • 512GB RAM
  • 2x SSDs
  • Windows Server 2016 (running no workload except the benchmark tool)

My first test is comparing a JBOD "Simple Mode" storage space vs RAID0

The most interesting result comes out of the 4K random read & write tests. You can see from the charts below the Storage Spaces throughput gives out about 100MB/s less than the RAID.

My question is: is this expected and/or is there some tuning within Windows Server/Storage Spaces to try and get similar performance?

Thanks Christoph

Storage Pool-Virtual Disk:Insufficient disk space - Can't copy files even though space is still available

Hello,

I've created a storage pool on my Windows Storage Server 2012 R2, added a virtual disk and mounted it, shared it on the network. So far so good.... I've assigned 6TB to the VHD. After copying about 1TB of data, the explorer stops with the error: "Insufficient disk space".

How do I fix it?

Second array not visible in Disk Manager.

I configured 2 RAID arrays (RAID5). Same controller. Installed Windows Server OS on the first Array. However the second array or virtual disk is not visible on the Disk Management. Restarting server and looking at the controller settings the first array status is Normal, the second array status is Ready. (Both listed as virtual disks) If I remember correctly I initialized both arrays. Why is Windows not seeing the second virtual disk/array? This is on a Dell Poweredge server.

Allow user to modify security settings on shared folder

$

Hi,

I'm confused about permissions - always have been. I have a shared directory structure on a File and Print server (Windows Server 2008 R2) and a separate domain controller. The User folder is setup so I (administrator) can add new users and set the permission level so they can create new folders, files - ie full control.

However some users are want to be able to add other users and allow them read/write permissions themselves, the more IT savvy members of the team are OK to be trusted with this - one users wants to add his assistant for instance but the assistant may leave and he wants to be able then to replace that user with a new assistant rather than asking me to do it.

So when it says FULL CONTROL it isn't at all, it's control over the read/write permissions but not over the security of the folder, so they cannot deny anyone or add anyone. How do I (as admin) modify that user to allow them to change the security themselves for folders in their folder and any folders below?

Thanks

Microsoft File Share Shadow Copy Agent Error

Hi,

We have several error message on one of our SOFS Clsuter and on both Host servers.

Example off Error message

Event ID: 1017

Microsoft File Share Shadow Copy Agent Error: The FssAgent RPC server failed to delete shadowcopy share \\NULL\VDISK01@{4ED95781-61BD-47DF-A89F-6B900798C2CC} with error code 2147754760.

It happens on different time and it is different GUID ids and not every day.

We have another cluster in the same environment and there we don’t have this error.

Both cluster is on the same level and are in the same network but they are placed in different DC. We use the same backup server for backup of the Hype-V environment that use this SOSF servers

The strange thing is that we got this error only on both Hosts in one SOFS cluster and this Cluster is placed in the same DC as the Backup server and the Other SOFS cluster I placed in another DC and has not this error.

If we look at the infrastructure in a very simple way, it is like this

We user Hyper-V replica in this Environment

2 SOFS environment with two HOSTS (Cluster)

  • SOFS1
  • SOFS2

2 Hyper-V cluster

  • Hyper-V1
  • Hyper-V2

And one backup server

SOFS1, Hyper-V1 and BACKUP is on the same DC
SOFS2 and Hyper-V2 are in another DC
The DC are connected with high speed infrastructure
The Backup system is Veeam

Has anyone any idea what I Should look for because I have tried to identify and scan the Internet for a solution but not been able to find any that could give some direction on this problem.

Or maybe it is not problem J

SMB multichannel between client with several 1 GBit connections and a server with a single 10 Gbit connection possible?

$

We need to quickly distribute large files (500MB) from a server to several clients. We have positively tested SMB multichannel file transfers between a client (Windows 8.1 or 10) and a server (Windows Server 2016) each equiped with four ethernet connections. The transfer rate was about 280 Mbit/s.

Now we would like to know if it is also possible to use SMB multichannel if the server is connected with a single 10 Gbit connection to the switch while the clients are connected with up to four 1 Gbit connections. Has anybody experience with such a setup?

We would prefer SMB multichannel over NIC teaming because it basically runs out of the box without changing the configuration of the switch.
