Server 2012R2 - Extend Spanned Volume: There is not enough space available on the disk(s)...

Hi all,

I have a problem with a spanned volume on a Server 2012R2:

We have a spanned volume over 7 disks (260101,19 GB in total) and i want to expand this volume (rest fo 7th disk and 1 new disk). Each time I try to expand the volume I get the following error:

There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to compete this operation.

I tried using the GUI and diskpart, same error.

Some information:

- All disks are dynamic disks

- Volume is formatted with ReFS

Hope you can help me!

Greetings,

Thomas

DFSr Error 2213, Replication has not occurred in a long time

Our lone DC, I know bad form attempting rectify, has Error 2213. Which is when the server experience a dirty shutdown and DFSr was not allowed to properly perform its functions and now has not replicated. I know how to resolve the 2213, run the command given in the Error message. However replication has not occurred since June of 2014.

Brief: 1 Windows Server 2012 non-R2 VM, fully updated, happily running as the DC, File Server, and some other roles. The only one of each in the domain. It's always been the only DC and file server.

According to http://howdoicomputer.com/2013/02/technical-stuffsysvol-dfs-replication-annoyances/ the server will through another error once the Event ID 2213 command is run in a command prompt. This error, most likely 4012, will state that replication cannot occur do to the time since the last replication has exceeded the allowed time set in the MaxOfflineTimeInDays parameter, which is by default 60 days. In the article the author gives how to resolve this, change the parameter to be a day or a few days farther in the past than when the last replication occured, simple enough. I've seen comments on that page that state that solved their issue(s), however they were in the 60 to 200 day ranges, not 2 years of days.

Trying to get opinions on whether this will solve our issue, or if there is another better way.

Thanks all in advance.

DFSR database engine stops. DFSR dies. Can I start the DB somehow?

On one of two servers in a replication group, there was ESENT event 103: "... The database engine stopped the instance (0)."

Seems like DFSR is completely dead on that server. It doesn't report events in Event Viewer, doesn't write to logs, I cannot restart the DFSR service, etc. This has been the case for 48 hours now. It has not happened before. (I think this happened due to a backup issue.)

Is there a way to start the engine? Or how else should one address this?

Diskpart - Read Only Volume for backups

Hello

We need to give a Windows 2012 server access to some VMWare volumes to allow backup software direct access to the storage.

I know we need to disable Automount and set the SAN policy to Offline Shared.  The volumes will appear in Disk Management as Offline.

I've also seen mention of setting the volume to read-only by using ATTRIBUTES VOLUME SET READONLY

My question is - does using this option actually write to the volume to set it to read only ?

We cannot set granular permissions on the volumes (Dell Equallogic) to give the VMWare hosts R/W access but the Windows server R/O.  My obvious concern is that the Windows server writes to the VMWare volumes, causing corruption.

Thanks

Change DFS folder target state

If you have a namespace with 200 folder targets, is there a way to update the state for all of them at once?

So, a script or function that takes every folder target under a namespace and changes the state, either enabling it or disabling it based on it's site?

Widows Search not working with Data Deduplication?

Hi,

I noticed that many files were missing when searching for them on my Server 2012 Fileserver.

After some troubleshooting I noticed that the ones missing, had a Size on Disk of 4KB and the "SparseFile" and "ReparsePoint" (PL) Flags set.

So it looks like they were processed by the enabled Data Deduplication.

Am I missing something here or is it really the case that deduplicated files cannot be indexed by windows search?

How do I turn off the Read Only Folder attribute

I have created a new drive for a Windows Server 2012 and have tried formatting it with various ways.  Each time I format the drive, when I create a folder, the read only attribute is set and I can't turn it off.  I have looked at other forums for similar issues and all suggest using the attrib function.  This appears to work, but when I refresh the folder, the read only is back on.

Even after assigning permissions, I can create files in the folders, but I cannot modify them in MS Office or any other application.  Any ideas on how to resolve this.  It appears to be alot of recurring posts for the same issue with no results.

Server 2016 FileDeduplication BROKEN on larger files

So we have freshly installed Server 2012 standard inside hyper-v machine also hosted inside server 2016.Everything working perfectly until we started using Deduplication on one of drives holding data. After it finished fully de-dupling volume all files larger than 3gb seam to be unreadable, copying starts and breaks at around 50% with error Cant read from source directory, smaller files than around 3gb copy just fine.If i compare file contents to backup disk they match and seam correct, files are not corrupted!Deduplication is ran inside VHDX, and size of total files are 2tb, with largest files inside are around 40gb.There are no errors in logs what so ever..

I found similar/same issue reported here

https://blog.zoomik.pri.ee/uncategorized/windows-2016-dedup-data-corruption-with-huge-files/

So for now im runing unoptimize process and will disable deduplicaiton hoping ill be able to access my files..

Automate DFSR deployment via PowerShell Scripting - Operation Error Occured

I have been trying to script the deployment of DFSR through Powershell and found a way to do this interactively, but not automatically during bootstrapping (with AWS).  However, when I try to do this from an elevated-session (as Domain Admin) to a remote system I receive the error:  "Could not create the replication group named "Group". An operation error occured."   No where can I see why the error occured.

Storage Spaces overhead

Hi, I'm testing storage spaces and ReFS on a VM and I'm not sure I've got it right...

The VM has the boot drive (80 GB) and four vhdx (10 GB each) connected.

1) I created the storage pool selecting all 4 10 GB disks (allocation: automatic) and ended up with a pool of 37 GB capacity / 36 GB free

2) I created a virtual disk with parity, fixed, maximum size (from the gui) and ended up with a 22 GB disk and 2,50 GB of free space in the pool (what? why??)

I'm wasting 8 GB on 30... a little too much I think. Did I do something wrong? Could someone explain why so much overhead?

Thanks

Work Folders - Several Sync Servers (DNS Configuration)

$

Good Morning.

In my company we're planning to deploy Work Folders, and I'm planning the deployment.

We're having at least 3 sync servers on the network. I'm having doubts in this config in DNS

"On your internal network, you should create a DNS alias record for the Work Folders URL that resolves to the server names of all sync servers on the network."

What does this means? I should have 3 DNS records for the each of the server?

How does that works? Round Robin?

Best reporting tools for NTFS permissions on File Server

$

I am not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but I have an NTFS permissions question on Windows 2003 r2.  Basically we have a file server that has all kinds of different permissions on different folders, etc.  Over the past few years we have had Admins go in and give some of our Techs permissions to stuff they should not have permissions to and this is on various subfolders throughout the file server.  I can not think of a simple way for us to remove these permissions as we can not just remove them at the top level or reset everything underneath to be the same as some of the permissions at the top level, etc.

So I guess we need a really good report of the user permissions on each folder(thousands) and then for us to search through those and try to find where our Techs have permissions?  Anyone have any ideas on the best tools to run that report, etc or any other ideas on this?

Thanks,

Is there a difference when accessing a file as \\server\folder\file or through a mapped network drive?

$

Hi,

for a medical application we need to access large images stored on the network. Performance is absolutely crucial. A colleague told me that it makes a difference if the folder with the images is accessed  using an url \\server\folder\file or if the folder is first mapped as a network drive an then accessed as X:\file. He said that windows uses different protocols in these two situations. Is this true? If yes, which one would you recommend with regard to performance?

Thanks for your support

Local disks added to cluster - How can I add disks owned by local node?

$

Hi

I have a Hyper-V cluster with 5 x Windows Server 2012R2 nodes. On each node I have some local disks that I would like to configure as local StorageSpace Pools on these nodes. The problem is that it looks like that the cluster is taking ownership of these disks, not the node the disks is physicaly placed in.

PS C:\Windows\system32>

My question is: How can I add disks to this Windows Server 2012R2 Cluster-node so that the disks is connected to (or owned by) StorageSubSystem "Storage Spaces on srv-hv-tb-01" not "Clustered Storage Spaces on cl-hv-tb"?

I have a theory that this behavior is caused by "Add all eligible storage to the cluster" was enabled when the Hyper-V cluster was configured. But I have not found out how I can disable this functionality after the cluster is created.

DFSR: Is it ok to empty the PreExisting folders after initial sync is complete and data is verified?

$

We have pre-seeded hundreds of GB of data on our hub server, and several GB of data ended up in the 'PreExisting' folder for each replicated folder.  Initial sync is complete for all of them and I want to verify it's ok to completely remove the contents of the Preexisting folder (leaving the Preexisting folder there, of course).  Also, I did try deleting one folder from it and explorer doesn't seem to respond.  Perhaps it's just a resource issue on a very busy DFSR hub server?  Is there a WMI method for pruning the Preexisting contents like there is for the conflictanddeleted folders?
